12 oz bottle poured into a pint glass. Best before August 07.
Pours a reddish tinged amber with pinkish-tan foamy head that recedes to a coating on the surface after a while, beautiful sticky lacing all over the glass, as we expect from Smuttynose. Some yeastoid particles swirling in from the bottom of the bottle, nice.
The nose is dominated by tart tangy cherry aroma, some malt and hops underneath, hard to distinguish with that cherry there, but there is a cinnamon/sugar thing going on in there. The cherry smells natural and fresh, gives this a winey impression.
Creamy mouthfeel due to nice carbonation. Black cherry up front, malt/tart hops in the midpalate, the strong tart sour cherry in the long finish, ending with lots of bitter cherry pit flavor, perhaps the bitterness from hops and cherries converge. The tart cherry is lip-smacking and lingers, it keeps coming back in the nooks and crannies of your mouth. Dry, dry, dry, this is a good thing. Unusual at first, it grows on you with every sip.
This is not my favorite style of beer, but I respect this effort for its loads of flavor that tastes of natural and real cherry essence. Its tanginess would complement rich food amazingly well, perfect for duck breast. This might be a good beer to bring wine lovers over to the beer world. It has a lot of the qualities of good food wines. I would reach for this with a hearty meal; on its own, when you are in the mood for something different.

12 oz bottle best by date July 2010
Purchased in 2010 did not like it back then. Had one bottle left and a have been avoiding it ever sense. Tired of looking at it in the back of the fridge and decided to open it for fun. Poured a dirty amber with a decent off white head. Noticed a few particles of sediment at the bottom of the glass. The intrepid first sip was a surprise, nice mouthfeel and good carbonation. This tasted like sour or lambic with some nice cherry notes. I thought this was going to be a drain pour, but it turned out to be pretty good. I'm not sure what matured, the beer or my taste?
