This hoppy, Belgian-style golden ale first appeared in early 2007 as the first edition of our Short Batch Series. At that time, we called it the Gnome, an homage to Brasserie d'Achouffe.

A: Amber yellow to orange sunburst fade. White and fine lookin' head.

S:Getting really excited! Orange juice and pineapple with lots of sweet citric hop smells. Touch of green banana in there and a touch of malt that is making me think of brioche. There is a spice smell, but it is floral... somehow... maybe its more of a floral nose with a touch of spiciness (think dried flowers and exotic bark).

T: Juicy. "Paler" than I expected from the nose. Hops are reeeaaaaly nice here. More grapefruit than the smell let on with a clean orange rind zing. Bread-y, not very belgian tuti-fruity, but slightly sweet in flavor and its got plenty of depth. Bit of bittering hops and alcohol heat in the finish, but not for too long. There is more pineapple as it warms up. The final impression is a dry, chewy, hoppy and subtly sweet IPA. Great, great, great.

M: Typical, med bodied IPA with fine carbonation. Slightly chewy.

O: Great IPA with a belgian twist. Loved it. like this take more than other Belgian IPAs, which I feel often come across as BPAs with extra hops.

This certainly live up to the big beer name. My sample has 2012 marked as the bottle conditioning date. I guess it's ready.

It's a pretty golden color with nice natural foaminess. The aroma isn't huge, but it is big and sweet and gives a warning. The taste follows through with a malty hugeness, offset by yeasty and hoppy hugeness. It's properly balanced, but huge on all taste fronts. Perhaps the thing out of balance is liquid - this could be diluted significantly and still be flavorful.

The aftertaste lingers bitter on the tongue. Overall this is a appropriately big brew that works. I was hoping for a more delicate take on the style but this is brutal.
