This hoppy, Belgian-style golden ale first appeared in early 2007 as the first edition of our Short Batch Series. At that time, we called it the Gnome, an homage to Brasserie d'Achouffe.

A 22 ounce bottle from FluffyMcTingle that was bottled in 05/2011. Thank you very much for this one! Poured into a DFH signature glass...

*Reviewing this according to the merit of the brew and the description/style on the bottle ("A Belgian Style Golden Ale") and not the listed style of "Belgian IPA"*

Pours a hazy golden orange color with about two centimeters of fluffy, frothy, perfectly white head. The head has some good retention and leaves a great number of lace-like strands on the walls of the glass.

The aroma is of honey, some spicy hops, caramel malt, faint yeast, some straw, and more honey. Some faint citrus notes (grapefruit, lemon, orange) round it out.

It tastes of honey, caramel, lemon, orange, straw, and some earthen hops. A very well balanced flavor profile that gives a cohesive, delicious experience.

Mouthfeel is rich and smooth, but the alcohol really burns through on the finish (especially as is warms). There is also a bit of a sticky, sweet finish which is less than ideal but not a deal-breaker.

Overall, a delicious brew that I would love to have more of; it feels like the perfect Spring-time brew, when the weather is naught but chilly rain and the glorious smell that comes with.

This certainly live up to the big beer name. My sample has 2012 marked as the bottle conditioning date. I guess it's ready.

It's a pretty golden color with nice natural foaminess. The aroma isn't huge, but it is big and sweet and gives a warning. The taste follows through with a malty hugeness, offset by yeasty and hoppy hugeness. It's properly balanced, but huge on all taste fronts. Perhaps the thing out of balance is liquid - this could be diluted significantly and still be flavorful.

The aftertaste lingers bitter on the tongue. Overall this is a appropriately big brew that works. I was hoping for a more delicate take on the style but this is brutal.
