On tap at the Birdsal House in Peekskill, NY. Enjoyed a few months ago and reviewed from notes.

Pours dull dark orange amber, with no head or lace exhibited.

I get a minor musty forest floor nose.

More then moderatly sour. Sour apple, musty funkyness, deliciousness fully in evidence. Densely flavorful and intriguing brew. Belgian yeasty notes to boot. I'd like to see this widely available in bottles...c'mon Smutty whaddya say?

On-tap at the Porter in Atlanta.

Pours an opaque muddy golden color with a two-finger off-white head. The head recedes into a thin layer on top leaving decent lacing.

Smells of grainy pale malts with hints of funk and lighter hints of light fruit - mostly pears but with hints of citrus.

Tastes similar to how it smells. Grainy and slightly spicy pale malt flavors kick things off and are joined midway through the sip by mild amounts of funk. Also joining in midway through the sip are faint citrus flavors and sweeter light fruit flavors that carry through to a slightly bitter ending.

Mouthfeel is good. It's got a nice thickness with smooth carbonation.

Drinkability is good. I finished my glass easily and could have another.

Overall this was a very interesting beer - somewhere in between an APA and BSPA with brett added. Worth a shot if you see it around.

Had a 10 oz. pour of this at the Ithaca Ale House. Appearance is a clear pale yellow/orange (a little hard to really see in the restaurant). Small white head dissipates. The aroma is a sweet and a little fruity, with hints of pineapple. Some lacing is present. Flavor is rather crisp with a mild hop bitterness and the fruit aspects coming through again. None of the sourness/funkiness that you usually expect from a brett beer. Finishes clean and crisp on the palate, somewhat thin mouthfeel and easy drinkability.

Brettanomyces are very very very prevalent. A little too unbalanced on the tart side for my personal preference, but not bad

On tap @ Cole's. Served in snifter.

A - Medium amber colour with a small amount of white head.

S - Slight tartness up front. Some sweet bready malts and a touch of funk.

T - Tartness up front that is not too bold. Some bready malts in the background and a slight sweet candy/caramel malt base that is able to pierce through the brett. Finish is tart and dry.

M - Medium body. Moderate carbonation.

O - A nice beer. The BPA and the brett played well together.

750ml Bottle.
A) Pours with a finger thick head that quickly dissipates to nothing. Relatively clear rust orange body. No lacing on the drink down.
S) Subtle woodsy - oak notes. A bit of a wet dog aroma. Overall not too aromatic.
T) Beneath the initial sour bite are notes of grapefruit, green apple, and nuts.
M) Medium-light body. Nearly zero carbonation. Drinks like a white wine. Dry in the finish.
O) A decent brew. My palate isn't acclimated to sours / brett beers so I am not a reliable review. Although I will say a very drinkable beer. Not too sour and still has some nice taste characteristics instead of a sucker punch to the face.

On-tap over at the Lion's Pride.

Pours a golden color with a tinge of orange and a bit of haze, good sized head and some sticky lacing.

Smell seems a bit musty actually, not really picking up much of the funky brett characteristics, has more of a spicy fruit aroma but definitely lacking in funk.

Taste is rather mild but this was the follow-up to the Oak Aged Maibock afterall, has a light malt taste with fruit in the background and earthy undertones, a crisp but soft carbonation works very well though.

2007 vintage on tap at Kickbacks in Jax. Poured into a snifter. Golden body, very slight haze. Very little head with no retention and hardly any lacing. Aroma includes pineapple, tangerine, candi sugar, peach, caramel, and maybe a hint of brett. Taste also has a little brett, faint. Some sweetness in the form of tropical fruit and some coming from the residual sugars and from the aged flavor of the beer. Could be disappointing to someone looking to pucker up. Other than that, the beer is certainly interesting and quite tasty.

Straight pour from 750ml growler to oversized wineglass (HF stemware), courtesty of bentonquest (thanks again, Jeremy!). Review from notes taken 6/13/12.

Appearance (3.0): Essentially no head on this, it foams for a bit and settles to a thin collar of off-white carbonation around the edge of the glass, leaving no lacing. The body, however, is quite attractive, boasting a crystal-clear bronze color—very clean and crisp-looking.

Smell (4.0): All brett here: slightly musty, with a moderate white pepper character laced all over the place. There’s a lightly sweet malt character, enhanced by that strange fruitiness that super-bretty beers will develop: some green apple, some apricot. Not a bad-smelling beer, for sure.

Taste (4.0): Somewhat tart, not sour, with more of the same fruit tones (green apple’s crisp, tart sweetness, richer and bolder apricot, and the kind of neutral sweetness of pear), more white pepper behind the fruitiness, and some tame, low-lying mustiness throughout, operating underneath the rest of this. Malt? Hops? Both are very, very neutral here, as this is definitely a yeast- (and without a question, brett-) forward beer. Extraordinarily vinous in nature, actually—this has more in common with white wine than it does with your typical beer.

Mouthfeel (2.5): Low carbonation, dry finish, slightly tingly, medium-bodied. Again, more like a robust white wine than a beer.

Overall (3.5): A Brett story, for sure. This has so many qualities that strike me as vinous more than anything else. From what I can tell, this beer was apparently brewed with Brett B and a Trappist strain, then inoculated with lacto and aged in neutral oak barrels for 10 months. Given that knowledge, the low carbonation and yeast-forwardness of this beer makes a lot more sense. Not what I’d call a Belgian Pale Ale, but that’s what it is for lack of a better category on here (wouldn’t really call it an American Wild, either). Interesting beer, glad to have tried. Had this on tap at Max's in Baltimore tonight.

This is pretty much average in all regards. The appearance was fine, but didn't impress me. It had what you'd expect from an on-tap beer. The brett introduced a unique taste, but it didn't stand above or below any other brett'ed beer. Still, it was not bad and I'd easily have this again.

Had this one at Deks up in Rocky Point NY. Poured a clear golden amber and a smooth 2-inch foam white head. Aroma was crisp and sweet.

Fruits, toffee malts, and Belgian spices all come together for a package that does not batter the tastebuds but rather lets you sit back and enjoy. Mouthfeel is spot on and this is a devilishly drinkable brew. A very good farmhouse ale from Smutty, wouldn't mind seeing this one stick around.

On-tap @ Blind Tiger, NYC - Poured into a tulip glass:

Pours hazed golden with a thin white head that lasts, leaving quite a bit of lacing.

The smell is sweettart with some brett funkiness.

The taste is of light malt - sweetish with a tart, funky mix. Not a knock-you-over-the-head funkiness, but it's there.

The carbonation is a bit mild. Light-bodied. Pretty crisp.

Nice for a milder, "intro-like" Belgian-style, funky brew with bretts.

On tap at Rustico in Alexandria. Served in a tulip.

Pours a very hazy orange color with a very short white head and nothing really going in the lace department. A good swirl doesn't really raise anything either.

The nose carries some light earth and a touch of citrus and some tropical fruits. Light pineapple. A bit of black tea as well, though that is very faint. Flavor brings a pineapple-like acidity with some floral and earth characteristics. Acidity is light and a nice touch. Some faint cherry notes as it warms.

Light-medium body with low carbonation. Normally that wouldn't work for a saison, but here that touch of acidity helps carry the fruit and funk through. Quite nice.

A - Pours a cloudy dark orange with an active light tan head that fades fast.

S - Brett, oak, lots of fruits. Slightly citrus, but apple and pear also.

T - Oaky and Brett mostly. The fruit is pretty much gone.

D - Good carbonation, light body with a dry finish.

O - Brett heavy, oak with a teasing nose. Dry in the mouth.

On tap tonight at the River Road Tavern Tap Takeover.
Came to my stool a fairly clear golden color without much of a head. The aroma is quite fruity and tart with lots of sour cherries apricots and lemons as a well as a hint of bready malt and a slightly earthy aroma. The flavor follows the aroma quite well. Tart fruit mixed with a bit of bread and caramel and a hint of funk. Medium body with a moderate level of carbonation and a tart almost puckering mouthfeel. This is a very nice sour ale, I quite enjoyed it, its too bad its taken me this long to find it.

Presentation: Served on tap into a Smuttynose Big Beer tulip glass. A really large pour (well over 12 oz.).

Appearance: Golden yellow in color, but doesn't pour much of a head surprisingly. A few fizzy white bubbles recede almost immediately into nothing.

Aroma" Big lemon and tart green apples upfront. I figured this might be more heavy on the funk and light on the sour from the name, but there is definitely a pretty vibrant sour character. I do get a bit of the brett as well, but not as much as I expected.

Taste: Sour green apple and lemon notes upfront. A sort of white wine sweetness is present as well. This is actually a lot sweeter than I would have suspected. The brett notes become more noticable as the sour fades, but they seem a bit underdeveloped and a bit muddled. Pretty refreshing overall, but not a stand out.

Mouthfeel: Surprisingly heavy for the style. There is a good amount of body and it is a bit syrupy. Carbonation is not flat but definitely on the lower end of the spectrum.

Overall, a decent sour beer from Smuttynose and a good attempt for their first real shot at the style. I think it really suffered from the mouthfeel being too syrupy and the lack of carbonation, which might have brightened everything up a bit. I would be interested to see how this is holding up in a couple years, but right now it is jsut average.

Had a glass or two at the BBF. Missed this one before at Coles in Buffalo.

Pours a lightly hazed light golden yellow, thin white head forms, settles down to a thin ring around the glass, some lace spots stick.

Smell is nice, lots of brett character, some barnyard and horse, nice light funkiness, caramel/honey sweetness, pineapples, lots of fruit character, really complex maltiness, and the funk plays well with the fruit character.

Taste is nice as well, neat pineapple/apple character, really malty, caramel and biscuit, honey malt, barnyard and funkiness, some wheat, really dry finish, light touch of spice.

Mouthfeel is light bodied with medium carbonation. A pretty neat beer, I dig the maltiness and the fruit character.

750ml into a snifter. The brew appears a clear orange with white cap that is quick to fade. Some spotty lace sticks to the wall of the glass and a swirl revives a finger back to the surface.

The smell is earthy with some fruity esters of funk and alcohol with earthy brett leather quality. Some oak and cheese is present. A nice mild aromatic mix of what you expect brett to smell like.

The taste is tart with fruity alcohol hints that blend into a bit of tropical rindy elements that is somewhat reminescent of hops but not really. Oak and earth strike the palate about mid way through with the finish being tropical and tart.

This is a light bodied brew with a moderate amount of carbonation. This was a very mild and easily approachable brew. I could have tanked the entire 750 myself but friends were around to share in the experience.

Had a 10 oz pour of this at Mugs Ale House

Poured a Hazy gold with a thin bubbly white head that disappeared pretty quickly, light lacing on the glass.

Floral hops, citrus fruit (lemon) a bit of brett funkiness, brett doesn't play as large a role as one would be led to believe by the name.

Citrus fruit on the palate with some tartness and a bit of funk, bitter dry hoppy finish.

I was hoping for some more funk, but none the less this is a solid brew from a great brewery

I've also had it on tap. Better bottle conditioned though.

Appearance: good over all color a peachy orange with good hazing.

Smells of funk and sour, small nuances of barnyard hay, good citrus notes that make the corners of my jaw twinge.

Taste of the above but down toned. The aromatics are more pungent than the flavor. Slightly subdued but good over all drinkability. I drank two bottles to myself on Monday. Delicious over all but a little lacking in mouth feel.

The mouth feel is what ends up bringing down the average of the quality. After speaking with the brewer the bottles were not given champagne yeast for bottle conditioning which is the reason for the lack of carbonation. It was a first time sour beer making mistake that will be corrected on the next batch. Brett-lacto is the finishing yeast strain which ate the shit out of the primary fermentation yeast strain as well as the residual sugars left over from primary. More carbonation would have lightened the body of the beer and made this thing a fantastic garden sipper... next time.

Pours nicely clouded gold with a white head. Funky antiseptic nose. Funky edge as well on flavor. Weird and total funk. Thick carbonation and smooth liquid. Leaves a lasting acrid, citrus flavor in the mouth. This is an interesting beer to say the least.

A lot of Brett is noted here, unsurprisingly. But also some citrus and other tropical fruits. A nice malty undertone. 4

Certainly focused on the Brett, the taste otherwise is a bit mild. Some citrus, some oak like characters, malt, and sweet. I like the balance, but I wish something other than Brett took charge. 4

Light body with a nice amount of carbonation. The finish is really dry and I found it to be quite drinkable. 4

I enjoyed this, but thought it was only slightly better than average. I wish it had another aspect to bolster what seems to be turning into a really nice experiment 3.5

Had this recently on tap. I'm thinking age may have helped this beer along. I didn't find it overly alcoholic at all and fairly drinkable. Didn't have much of a head at all when I got it, served in a small snifter. Smelled a little malty, with mostly brett earthyness. Fairly light on the palate with a dry crisp finish. Taste was pleasant. Sort of earthy with some brett tartness and a malt backbone. It was a sipper for me and wouldn't have more than one, but was pretty refreshing still on a hot humid night in August.

On tap at The Kinsale in Boston, served in the Smuttynose Big Beer tulip, Brett & I is murky dark gold with a small, creamy white head that leaves scattered lace. Typed from notes within a week of taking them while relaxing in their outside seating after a nice Saturday walking the Freedom trail.

Smell is soft, with caramel malt but not particularly sweet, fusel alcohol and slight barnyard.

Taste is pretty strong and boozy, very white wine like, and not much brett funkiness save for being a bit on the drier, not sugary side for a thicker beer. IMHO this is not ready yet and should have been aged by brewery a good bit longer, to let the complexities of the brett develop and continue to thin out the malty mouthfeel, as well as generally smooth out the harsh alcohol bite. Big pet-peeve of mine in fact, when funky or sour beers are released to retail before the bugs have had time to actually get funky!!! I'm probably being hard on this because of the name, and lack of overwhelming brett character. Maybe they just used it in the secondary?

Mouthfeel is thick and drier, a boozy solvent feel.

Drinkability was lower for me, a pretty big disappointment as I really love some brett beers. I was expecting something like De Proef's Flemish Primitive's, but this was more of a heavy booze bomb, again, very wine like in regards to the strength of the alcohol, which is not something I wanted to drink a glass of, nor have be the dominating flavor.

My cousin was kind enough to split this one with me, hazy orange pour, smallish head, no lacing. The aroma has some light funk. The flavor was mild, some citrus, funkiness. The carbonation was light, no alcohol, easy drinking. I was expecting more funkiness, but an enjoyable brew.
