Bottle sent by wowcoolman, poured into a snifter.
Thin yet opaque black, like mixed watercolor paint. The head is large, about two inches tall, the consistency and color of sugar boiling on the stove. It soon collapses to a dense inch and sets up camp. Looks thick enough to walk on.
Lots going on in the aroma. Figs and raisins first, followed by mild bittersweet chocolate chips, then smoke, vanilla, oats. Smooth, rich, cigar-like.
This right here is how it's done. Tangy dark chocolate and milder fruits up front. The swallow brings milk chocolate, toasted oats and vanilla. Smokiness is much more prominent, settling in after the swallow and lingering for a long while. Dark prunes show up every now and then. A flash of fruit at every swallow quickly gives way to roast, which I like here — more porter than Baltic.
Thinnish body. Medium-light, but with interesting creaminess and gentle, massaging carbonation. Not much alcohol — just some warming in the throat.
A nearly pitch-perfect example of a Baltic porter. Great balance of sweet and smoky.

A - A beautiful black brew, with dark brown highlights, but mostly opaque. Capped with a dark tan head that reduce to a thin line that maintains serious lacing.
S - Mostly roasted malts, with a line of wood and molasses. Underlying this is a strong element of alcohol. Subtle, given the flavor blast to come.
T - Full flavor of roasted malts, with subtle chocolate elements, toasted grains, and mild tobacco and leather notes. Dark bread in the middle, like molasses bread, and a subtle bitter note to close, and a hint of alcohol.
M - Silky smooth, with a full feel, and some mild coating, but the alcohol at the close effectively scrubs the heaviest elements away.
O - Tremendous effort, with a very big, bold brew that manages to deliver imperial stout flavors via the distinct style of the baltic porter.
