Re-rate of 2009 vintage with over a year of additional age. Dunno if it was the age, the previous bottle, or my palate, but I'm much more impressed with this beer now than I originally was.
Served at cellar temperature. Pours dark brown/black with a big foamy and frothy brown head that leaves some clumps of lacing and recedes to a wispy island and ring.
Aroma is a perfect blend of rich chocolate, coffee, and roasted malts with dark fruits of cherries, raisins, figs and black currants. Some anise, vanilla and a touch of oxidation round things out. Excellent strength.
Flavor is chocolate, roasted malts, coffee, cherries, raisins, black currants, anise, some vanilla, caramel, toffee, brown sugar, and very little alcohol presence. Moderate sweetness. Very bold and robust flavor.
Mouthfeel is creamy, medium to full bodied, with medium carbonation.
Probably the best American-brewed Baltic Porter I've had to date. Can't wait for this year's batch to come out!

Bomber bottle, 2009. Pours very dark brown, nearly black, with a nice half-inch brown head.
Aroma is roasted malts, coffee, chocolate, and a touch of sour milk.
Flavor is chocolate, coffee, roasted malts, with hints of dark fruits and vanilla. Alcohol bite is noticeable.
Full, creamy mouthfeel, medium carbonation.
Baltic Porters are one of my favorite styles, and while this is an excellent example, I feel it is a bit over-rated. Sinebrychoff (Koff) Porter is superior. Duck-Rabbit's is very good, but inconsistent. I've only had this one Smuttynose Baltic Porter, so I cannot commend on its consistency. Every Sinebrychoff I've had has been exactly the same, and is, IMHO, the best Baltic Porter out there.

A - A beautiful black brew, with dark brown highlights, but mostly opaque. Capped with a dark tan head that reduce to a thin line that maintains serious lacing.
S - Mostly roasted malts, with a line of wood and molasses. Underlying this is a strong element of alcohol. Subtle, given the flavor blast to come.
T - Full flavor of roasted malts, with subtle chocolate elements, toasted grains, and mild tobacco and leather notes. Dark bread in the middle, like molasses bread, and a subtle bitter note to close, and a hint of alcohol.
M - Silky smooth, with a full feel, and some mild coating, but the alcohol at the close effectively scrubs the heaviest elements away.
O - Tremendous effort, with a very big, bold brew that manages to deliver imperial stout flavors via the distinct style of the baltic porter.
