From: The Corkscrew, Urbana, IL
Date: 2012 edition
Glass: Tulip

Best a bit cold to mask the ethanol, even with a bit of age on it, this is otherwise a very good baltic porter with strong dark chocolate, burnt toast, and dried fruit flavors. Due to its large-bottle format, this should be enjoyed over two days unless splitting the bottle with others. One I will pick up again, and would not mind having another "in the cellar."

Head of 2cm in height, dark tan in color, small to medium-sized bubble size, frothy to soap-like. Average retention of around one minute, fading to a thin ring around the perimeter of the glass and a medium-sized island of thin film atop the body. Lacing is modest, with some small-sized dots and blotches clinging to the sides of the glass. Body is very dark brown to black in color, with light revealing no changes. Carbonation not visible through opaque body.

Aroma of roasted cacao, burnt toast with caramelized sugar, dark licorice, molasses, raisins, dried black figs, and prunes. Heavily roasted, but balanced by base and specialty malt sweetness as well as yeast esters to add depth; very pleasing.

Overall flavors of dark chocolate, burnt coffee and toast, dried dark fruit (raisins, black figs, prunes), anise, and ethanol. Front of palate tastes dark chocolate, dried fruit sweetness (raisin, prune, black fig), diluted black coffee, anise, and ethanol. Mid-palate experiences deeply roasted malt that's balanced very well by base malt sweetness, creating a slightly sweet dark chocolate mixed with burnt toast, caramel, anise, raisins, dried black figs, black coffee, and ethanol. Back of palate tastes intense dark chocolate, charred toast, dark caramel-like sweetness, and somewhat harsh ethanol. Aftertaste of medium intensity acridity from roasted malt mixed with bitterness from hops, dark chocolate, overdone black coffee, burnt toast, and lingering ethanol flavor.

Beer is medium to medium-heavy in body, with carbonation of medium-low intensity, resulting in a foamy (1/3) and otherwise smooth (2/3) mouthfeel that is appropriate for a sipping beer and this style in general. Closes dry, with heavy stickiness lingering on the palate and lips.

2012

Black covered by a creamy looking, patchy head. Rich dark fruit and bread aromas with a bit of oxidation from age...raisins, prunes, figs, molasses, and port becoming increasingly chocolaty towards the end of the glass. Big malty flavors of dark, bitter chocolate, dry roast, and some vinous fruit. Silky smooth, somewhat oily, with a light acidity. Nutty, creamy malt and some char. Full-ish yet fluffy in the mouth. Really excellent as it warms and starts to open up.
