Live review. Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into my Ommegang Hennepin silver rimmed glass. Purchased at Wegmans in Jamestown, NY 8 29 09 as a part of a Smuttynose mix pack. "Best before" date of November 2009.
A Mature saison look with a brief but creamy looking head. Good lacing too. Very nice. 4.5
S Nice, lightly sweet saison smell with maybe some spices. 4.0
T Wow, very good saison with a nice citrusy taste and light spices. This may be my favorite saison made in the U.S. It has a great Belgian yeast taste as well. Pleasant, interesting, somewhat sweet and delicious. I cannot see how the taste can be improved. 5.0
M Appropriate feel beefed up by spices, citrus sweetness and some alcohol. 4.0
D Very high. I finished this glass very quickly. 4.5
Note: A great beer from Smuttynose. I am now understanding why there is so much attention given to this brewery.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a pint glass:
Appearance: Poured a cloudy golden color, 2 finger head with decent head retention, lacing was minimal but followed the glass down nicely.
Smell: Nice light fruit notes, bits of peach, honey and some spicy malt notes. Very light aroma in the nose, actually really satisfying. Some mango like sweetness is here hits the nose as well making this a very fresh smelling brew.
Taste: Wow, light and refreshing, grassy notes first hit the palete, followed by some sweet spiciness, bits of coriander, citrus, honey, and tea. Almost like a glass of Lipton tea brewed into a beer. Very interesting to say the least. Slight breadiness in the finish is the perfect complement to this beer.
Mouthfeel: Carbonation is small, holds up well on the tongue, slight bitterness is small but here. Actually interesting in the mouthfeel.
Drinkability: Very good for a Belgian Pale, overy sessionale considering the ABV, and light enough even for my girlfriend to enjoy this. Didn't expect anything less from Smuttynose, but this brew hits the spot. A perfect summer time beer for the beach!

Nice clear, golden color with minimal head and even lacing. Slight hoppy smell with a nice sweet, malty flavor. There's a nice balance of spices, it's a great alternative to very light or hoppy summer beers. This one is very highly drinkable - I'd certainly put this on tap at home as it would make a great summer session beer.

I fell in love with Smuttynose after having their Pumpkin Ale on draught.
I've sought out several of their beers since and haven't found a beer I don't like.
Star Island Single is a nice, crisp, refreshing pale ale which goes down smooth. It's a medium yellow color with a typical Belgian beer smell.
It's very drinkable and although it rings in it almost 6% alcohol, it doesn't seem heavy.
Perfect for anytime of the season. Try and find this one.

L: Pours a nice yellow color with a medium sized and light bodied white colored head that laces the glass slightly on the way down.
S: Good sweet lightly toasted malt aroma with a citrusy and spicy aroma that ends the nose.
T: Very nice lightly toasted malt base with layers of citrus flavors and spicy yeast flavors back to a nice citrus finish. I thought it was going to have a stronger yeast presence but it turned out really nice.
M: Crisp, refreshing, perfect amount of carbonation.
D: Very drinkable, this is one of my new favorites of the category.

Poured in a pint glass, probably served too cold, but hey, it's a hot day.
A- Deep gold color with significant haze. An inch of off-white head that leaves nice lacing the whole way.
S-Lots of citrus and a hint of wheat and clove.
T- I have to say this is really hitting the spot. I was concerned that the label said "brewed with spices", but it is well rounded with a bit of fruity sweetness and a nice bite. Coriander, maybe?
M- plenty of body, but by no means heavy.
O- Very enjoyable, and definitely seems sessionable on nice day outside.
Very disappointed I only had one bottle of this...

12 oz bottle poured into a pint glass.
Medium amber brew with a small head receding to a ring.
Aroma is ver nicely spicy, grains of paradise seem likely to be in use, maybe star anise.
The flavor brings lots of nicely tingly spiciness to a nicely balanced brew. Malt and mild hoppiness let the spice really take the lead. A very nice Belgian pale ale...reminds me of Ommegang's Rare Vos, with an even more pronounced spice profile. Great job.

Pours a cloudy reddish-amber color with a one-finger head into my glass.
Aroma is full of spice and pale malt with only a touch of hops in the nose.
Taste is full of spice upfront and pale malt in the middle. Clean and easy to drink.
Mouthfeel is full of lingering pale malt and spice. Again, very clean beer with no offensive flavors.
I like this. It's drinkable for the style and simple. It won't replace the Portsmouth Lager but they could have done a lot worse.

Poured into a Sam Adams glass.
a: Pours very cloudy with a tiny head
s: Smells good, kind of like a better Sam Adams White Ale. Maybe a little more subdued than Sammy.
t: Taste is actually quite good, definitely qualifies as a session beer, I feel parched after every sip. I swear I taste coriander, but not much else. Taste is a little flowery but not overwheliming.
m: Mouthfeel is average, a little numbing.
d: I could have a few of these, but don't think I would. I am more of a hophead and this is a more of an in between beer for me.
Overall, I would recommend this beer. It kind of brings me back to when Sam White Ale came out. For some reason that beer has soured on me but this one reminds me of the good ole times having White Ale on draft at the Daytona Beach Ale House.

Pours a hazy orange with an attractive white head with excellent retention. Big aromas of yeastiness and orange juice, a dull maltiness and some spices. Tastes like it smells except perhaps a bit sweeter than the nose suggests. Round flavors in a medium body that has wheat beer texture that I find very appealing. In the case of this beer the whole is greater than the sum of its parts - it is eminently drinkable in such a way that describing any single characteristic cannot quite capture it.

The beer pours a hazy dark gold color with a thick frothy white head that slowly fades to lacing. The aroma is good. It has a solid pale and Munich malt scent along with a nice Belgian yeast aroma. It has a tart fruit scent with a bit of mustiness to it. The taste is good as well. It has a smooth pale malt flavor that goes down easy and finishes dry with some fruity yeast esters. The mouthfeel is good. It is a medium bodied beer with perfect carbonation. This is a highly drinkable beer. It love the yeast character and the low abv. . It's a great session beer.

12oz bottle served in a standard pint glass.
Hazed golden color with a white head that remains as a layer leaving here & there spotty lacing.
The aroma is earthy and also has a bit of yeasty funk.
The taste is sweet and spiced, it finishes sticky sweet on the lips.
Light to medium bodied with a very crisp feel.
It goes down very easy and is quite refreshing.

A 5.2% sessionable Belgian Style Pale Ale... you've got my attention. $8.99 for this fresh sixer at Bottle King in Dumont, NJ... I love the label too.
Served in a Belgian tasting tulip at just over fridge temperature. Best before September '09.
Appearance- Pours a hazy medium gold with a white soapy head that crests at three fingers briefly, before settling to a solid 1/2 inch. Each sip (read: gulp) leaves behind Saturn's rings in the form of thick, clingy lacing.
Smell- A nice mustiness is offset by a bready, spicy nose that also delivers a floral, perfumy aroma... delicate and very fragrant. It's clean and distinctive, with good balance of what seems to be orange peel, malt, and hops.
Taste- Spices, all of which are quite elegantly presented, unravel their properties while complementing a subtle bitterness from the hops. The finish is dry but not bone dry... all in all it's just really enjoyable.
Mouthfeel/Drinkability- Consistent and delicate, but at the same time active and rolling with plenty of interest. This is really great, it goes down so easily without the bellyfill of most BPAs out there... it has some of the same characteristics of a hoppier Belgian wit. I will certainly buy more of these for this coming Summer's festivities... hopefully in keg form for July 4. Great job Smutty!
