Made for taking a break from the Sturm und Drang of modern life, this elegantly refreshing pilsner was created with German malt balanced with the spicy tang of Czech Saaz hops. The bread and biscuit flavors of the grain are topped with the floral character of the Noble hop, which may just get you to shimmy into your favorite lederhosen, bust into a quick schuhplattler and loudly proclaim, “Das ist Vunderbar!” Prost! 15 IBU (AKA - Short Batch #11)

Serving: On tap at the brewpub tasting rom into a 4oz sampler
Served: 24 August 2015

Appearance: Pours a rich gold color with definite depth- not the pale yellow some might associate with a pilsner-style beer. Great pearl head on the beer which sticks around for a while. No visible carbonation coming up from the bottom though, which I like to see in a good pils.

Smell: Grassy hops and a white-bread malt base. Decent.

Taste: Assertive bitterness across the palate, with a flavor profile that is pretty standard for a too-style pilsener. Nice bready malts, a pinch too sweet for my tastes (more white bread than bread crust), but I like the noble hop flavor and bitterness. The beer uses North American 2-row as a base malt, and I'm curious if changing it to an imported version might kick this one into the upper echelon of US brewed German pilseners.

Mouthfeel: Medium-light body with strong, sharp carbonation. Really great.

Overall: I'm a lager-head and I'm very peculiar about my pilseners, so my rating might be lower than it would be otherwise. That said, this is a great US brewed German pilsener and one that I really enjoyed. I'd be curious about my aforementioned change in the grain bill, but otherwise, this is one damn good beer.

I enjoyed this on tap served chilled in a pint at Warwick Hotel.

The color is golden with good clarity and lasting snowy white head with thick lace. The smell has lots of herbal/floral hop aroma with earthy/woody character and very nice fragrance of hops in general with light yeast ester . The feel is mild hop bitterness wise with medium light body and slight sweetness and gentle bready smooth yeast quality wiht semi-dry finish.

The taste is excellent with light initial hop flavor with more herbal and light mineral yeast with slightly dry malt flavor with subtle earthy and light fruity flavor of hops with gentle dry yeast element in the finish. Overall this is a solid pils for the style it lacks a little crispness but is nicely flavored with relatively high drinkable quality I would love to have a bottle to compare to this draft

Pours a very pale gold with a thin head.
Bit of a grassy and floral smell.
A hint of lemon, this is light and balanced.
Excellent example of a pilsner.

A big thanks to the founding father of the canquest, woodychandler, for this beer. Poured from a 12 oz. can. Has a cloudy, bright yellow color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of malts, light grains. Taste is malts, lemons, some hops at the finish, highly refreshing. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall a good beer that I could easily drink several of.

A: cloudy; medium gold in color; 1 finger white head that receded slowly to a thick cap; nice lacing;

S: pilsner malt; some hop spiciness;

T: hay, grass; from mid-palate on, a little malt sweetness; mild bitterness and a touch of spice on the finish;

M: medium bodied; moderate to high carbonation; clean; crisp; medium dry finish;

O: refreshing; cloudiness was a odd, but didn't affect the flavor; needed more bitterness;

Look - Overly cloudy for a pilsner.
Smell - Slight fruit aroma on the nose of which I have NEVER smelt (extremely good and unique)
Taste - Although the presence of pilsner is obvious, the addition of a pear-like essence tops this (in my opinion) as one of the BEST American style pilsners on the market! Beyond the achievement of Dogfish Head Brewing's Piercing Pils by far for pear addition.
Feel - As great as, if not better than, the taste.
Overall - Exquisitely crafted pilsner which both refreshes and satisfies the pallet!

Pours a hazed gold with a barely there head. Smells of huge herbal, grassy hops. Very straight forward pils malt aroma and clean yeast. Subdued hop flavor with hardly any balancing bitterness. Crisp pale malts. Slightly sweet. Very gentle carbonation. Light to medium body. This is tasty and super clean, but it needs more character.

Poured from a 12oz. bottle into a Samuel Adams stang glass.

The color is a cloudy yellow with two fingers of foamy white head with some nice thick lacing left on the glass.

The smell is has a malty aroma with some grains here in the nose. There is pronounced barely aroma here that makes me picture cereal grains. There is some teases at wheat here but then eases into a slight citrus aroma with some lemon and hints or coriander.

The taste is citrus fruit flavor that is the staple here. There is a slight grainy flavor that is pushed aside before there is a great lemon flavor that comes out with a touch of tangerine and some slight pear. The end of this beer has a slight push of bitterness but is mostly wrapped in some dry bready flavor.

The feel of this beer is light and is crisp with a nice drinkable feel that goes down easy. There is a real smoothness to this beer that drinks like a session beer but leans a little over the line into a heavier beer.

Pours straw colored and with a slight haze. White foam to crown this beer that lasts and hugs the glass to the very end. Nose is soft pils malt, with a a cheeky little peppery herbal from hops. Some spice to tickle the nose. Taste is vibrant. That soft and graceful malt rolls over the palate with a light touch of fine golden sweetness. The hops are leafy and herbal, peppery and lean onto the palate only whimsically with a very slight bitterness to take you in to a clean and dry finish. Pils malt is a wry touch breaddy at the swallow and this beer was VUNDERBAR!

L: Hazy gold. Small head of bubbly white. Decent lacing.
S: grassy, floral, slight hop scent.
T: very similar to the smell. Balanced, with an almost floral aftertaste.
F: medium, with some carbonation.
O: very drinkable Pilsner. Nothing super special, but it does a nice job. Would have it again.

Serving: 12 oz bottle poured into a stemmed Pilsner (beer tulip) glass (stamped "best by 03/02/15").

Appearance: Bright but hazy yellow gold, crowned by a frothy head of white bubbles. Spotty lacing and a fringe of white foam linger.

Smell: Pleasant doughy malt, very light yeasty bread, lemon zest and floral hops.

Taste: Full but delicate malt; fresh white bread. Hints of lemon, even berries, as well as light hop spice and just enough balancing bitterness.

Feel: Light to medium body and carbonation with an overall smooth feel.

Overall: Light, crisp, balanced and refreshing.

08/01/13 On tap At Rattle N Hum, NYC. Bready/biscuity hits you in the face as you approach this brew. Merges w/citrus over the tongue but leaves as a guest one would invite back. Dry finish can't be ignored yet doesn't overwhelm. The Smutty crew allude to the old world. I'm not one to qualify that, but will say this can stand on it's own.

A thick white and bubbly head with bubbles that seem to reach out and cling to every centimeter of glass is the first thing you see. The body is a light blonde color with mild haziness and filled with carbonation. The head sticks around or a while and there’s a nice thick lacing to mark every sip you take.
Light malts and lemon zest
Light malts and lemon zest followed by hops and then the malt. There is a slight earthy flavor in there too and a slight alcohol taste as you swallow.
Crisp and light bodied, the lively carbonation really makes this a refreshing beer.
Light, crisp, refreshing and very tasty. This is a must try pilsener

Long time want. Best by 15 Feb 2015. Bottle from Julio's.

Pouring a clear golden yellow with a dense, white head with excellent retention and lacing, this looks awesome. The nose is great. Bright, snappy , crisp and refreshing, there's a blend of lemony Saaz hops, doughy pils malt , mildly earthy and mildly perfumey hops and a touch of cotton candy. The lemon character is so pure, so deep and yet so complex and so subtle. Magnificent.

The palate opens crisp and clean with a blend of pleasant lemony Saaz bitterness, earthy hops and a mild doughy sweetness. Despite the pronounced hop character, it is lacking in that snap that the best German pilsners have. A very faint butterscotch character is present on the mid palate. Drying on the finish with a blend of lemony bitterness, earthy, woodsy hop flavor and a sweet dough flavor, this beer is crisply carbonated and quite excellent on the palate. Excellent stuff.

Bright yellow and pale. Tall white head.

Not much for the smell... but then again I've a stuffy nose.

Bright lemon and zest hit up front. Orange and citrus follow with a nice sweetness. Background is light hops and grass.

Crisp and clean. Lovely.

Was looking for a refreshing beer. This did it! Without losing flavor too!

Tastes great. It pours as pale yellow, with normal head. The only issue is that my bottle reads the ABV as 4.9%, not 5.10%, as stated in the beers description.

The light citrus flavor compounded with the bitterness of the hops are overall reminiscent of grapefruit. Very simple; very refreshing.

Pours a clear pale yellow, crisp-looking body, fizzy with a white finger-width of head. Some lacing builds.
Smells like a citrusy, lightly spiced, biscuity pilsner. Refreshing scent.
Tastes like a pilsner with the malts I love about them, with light lemon-pepper favor, and this one finishes with a grassy/ mineral bite. Drinks light and peppery.
It feels crisp, smooth, medium carbonated and yet the liquid feels on the thin side.
Overall, a nice pilsner from a great brewery.

A cloudy straw colored beer with a white head.

A faint smell. Sweet floral hops.

Light side of medium bodied.

Watery mouthfeel at first.
Thin malts, with a citrusy lemon flavor and a slightly bitter finish.

Very refreshing.
This would make for a nice summer beer.

Pale yellow, chill haze, carbonation streams, three fingers of level white foam.

Nose is fresh cut grass, hay, and a dash of lemon.

Soft, sweet malt beginning, a stepping stone not a foundation. Some earthiness. Rising bitterness. Big bite at the swallow. Lingering bitterness.

Soft mouthfeel.

Good pilsner.

A: 4.25 - Bright straw gold with dense head, fading slowly.
S: 3.75 - Good noble hop aroma, but somewhat faint.
T: 4.0 - Very good flavor, with plenty of bitterness, with lots of hop flavor, though the hop flavor seems a little citrusy and flowery for german styles. Malt is flavorful as well. Clean, refreshing.
M: 4.0 - Good carbonation levels
O: 3.75 - Good beer, though the noble hop taste is what I look for most in German pils. This is good, but it's not going to become one of my go-to pilses.

Pretty solid pilsner. Could be a tad hoppier for my liking, but its certainly within style. Definitely got some "real" malt flavor, vs the cheap macro lagers. Its nothing mind blowing, but its what you'd expect from Smutty.

A: Pours a clear, pale gold with a thick white head that recedes slowly.

S: Aromas of grain, minerals, crackers, biscuits, lemon, grass, herbs, and honey present themselves on the nose.

T: Notes of lemon, grass, honey, and herbs are fleeting in the mouth, as they are overpowered by flavors of crackers and minerals. The finish is brief and oddly bland-notes of honey, grass, lemon, and biscuit are just barely detectable.

M: On the lighter side of medium in terms of body and not all that dry, especially when compared to traditional examples of the style. Carbonation is far too airy, gentle, and unobtrusive for a lager of this sort. Taken as a whole, this beer feels sort of underpowered.

O: This pilsner was promising to start, but went completely downhill really fast. As far as German pilsners go, this one is seriously lacking in depth and complexity. Smuttynose can do far better and so can fans of this style.

given a single bottle in Feb 2014. Poured into a Pilsener glass, served at fridge temp.

appearance: hazy honeycomb yellow with a thick soft white head.

smell: lemon citrus with sugary notes. The usual spicy hop bouquest which is Pilsener trait is absent.

taste: thick malt with a vegetal funk.

mouthfeel: decent.

overall: maybe a bad bottle or maybe just bad beer.

Served in an Ohio State shaker pint glass.

It's taken me long enough, but I've finally gotten around to trying out this semi-heralded pils. It pours a clear straw topped by a short finger of lightly off-white foam. The nose comprises strong grass, greens, mild biscuit, and a touch of what may or may not be wintergreen way in the distance. The taste brings in more of the same, noble-style hops really taking the fore without overdoing things. The body is a light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a straightforwardly crisp finish. Overall, a nice pils, nothing special, but something I could easily drink again.
