Made for taking a break from the Sturm und Drang of modern life, this elegantly refreshing pilsner was created with German malt balanced with the spicy tang of Czech Saaz hops. The bread and biscuit flavors of the grain are topped with the floral character of the Noble hop, which may just get you to shimmy into your favorite lederhosen, bust into a quick schuhplattler and loudly proclaim, “Das ist Vunderbar!” Prost! 15 IBU (AKA - Short Batch #11)

Served in an Ohio State shaker pint glass.

It's taken me long enough, but I've finally gotten around to trying out this semi-heralded pils. It pours a clear straw topped by a short finger of lightly off-white foam. The nose comprises strong grass, greens, mild biscuit, and a touch of what may or may not be wintergreen way in the distance. The taste brings in more of the same, noble-style hops really taking the fore without overdoing things. The body is a light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a straightforwardly crisp finish. Overall, a nice pils, nothing special, but something I could easily drink again. (626 characters)

The color is cloudy and yellow but interesting. The almost unfiltered look masks the carbonation that bubbles through the body. All this effervescent bubbling and no signs of a head. The pour was true but it amounted to a wispy layer of loosely knit bubbles that just blew away.

The scent is fruity with grainy cereal malts, light barley, fresh bread and tinges of hop bitterness. At first glance, with my nose that is, I caught lemon twist and light banana. It was fleeting but then true Pilsner scent arrived.

The taste and feel are deeply intertwined as a crisp clean refreshing taste ends in a similar feel. Cereal maltiness compliment a bready grain and end in more hops than in typical Pilsners. Very easy on the throat the carbonation is easily visible but barely noticeable. This is a light airy version of a Pilsner and a very good one at that. (855 characters)

Served from tap into a shaker. Poured a light golden yellow with a one finger fluffy pure white head. Maintained phenomanol lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, fruit (bananas mostly), and grain. The flavor was of sweet malt, bananas, and spices. It had a light feel on the palate with low-mid carbonation. Overall this one wasn't that bad, nor was it that great. This one did have some nice flavors going on, but they were just too bundled together and didn't stand out on their own. This one is worth trying at least once, but that would be about it (for me at least). (601 characters)

A-Clear yellow, one finger head, some carbonation along with some lacing.

S-Strong malt, bread, straw and wheat. Tad bit of grass.

T-Starts sweet with a good deal of bread and straw, tad bit of lemon and grass.

M-Light to medium bodied, nicely carbonated.

O-A decent pilsner, still not a style I enjoy but this is a better one. (331 characters)

A - Not much carbonation yet I got an overflowing bottle top that foamed over. In the glass just a 1/4 inch of sticky head that settles to a thick lace ring. Color is a rather hazy bright yellow rather than your typical bright yellow Pils.
S - Smell is rather light, some hops and a bit of pilsner malt. Maybe some corn but also faint.
T - One of the better pilsner's I had in a while, some corn, some hops, balanced sugary body that hides the skunky yeasts well. Tasty.
M - Light to medium easy to drink.
Overall I am not sure how old this is but it tastes great. Nice short batch series I wish I could find more. (614 characters)

Beer pours hazy golden with a smaller white fizzy head on top. Carbs are gentile.
Aroma is lightly malty in the lager/pilsner tradition .
Taste is crisp and dry with some grassy notes. Sutle hops toward the end.
Drinks smoother with a dry crispness.
This beer is quite refreshing but all in all is quite boring. (311 characters)

Pretty solid pilsner. Could be a tad hoppier for my liking, but its certainly within style. Definitely got some "real" malt flavor, vs the cheap macro lagers. Its nothing mind blowing, but its what you'd expect from Smutty. (223 characters)

Modest bar pour head, but it leaves plenty of minute webby lace. Pale gold color with a touch of haze.

The smell is the weak point of this beer with plenty grainy aromas.

Mildly fruity, particularly in the swallow. Light hop throughout. Decent body and carbonation. Good example of a German Pils. (300 characters)

Poured from a freshness dated 12 oz. bottle: now this is an odd pour for a pilsner - cloudy, yellowish hue with a very nice foamy white-head. This is an unfiltered interpretation that I am not used to seeing. The fizzy and carbonated character reminds me of a wheat beer.

For a pilsner the aroma was quite impressive - big lemony, almost fruity like character that again, reminds me of a wheat.

The flavor is very smooth with lemony, yeasty flavor and a nice refreshing malt aftertaste. It is very enjoyable but not pilsner like. As the lager warms in the glass, some of the European hop flavor is evident. For the style it is very unique and quite quaffable.

Appropriately light bodied for the style with a creamy mouthfeel. The carbonation gives this one a nice, zesty kick. Faintly fruity and lemony flavor lingers on the palate.

This is a great warm weather refresher but not much to style. (899 characters)

On-tap at Mugs Alehouse, Brooklyn, NY

A: The beer is slightly hazy yellow in color and has no visible carbonation. It poured with a thin bright white head that died down and left lacing covering the surface.
S: There are aromas of biscuit and bready malts in the nose along with some notes of floral hops.
T: The taste has a mixture of bready, biscuit and grainy malts along with a light amount of bitterness that lingers through the finish.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied, smooth and clean on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer makes for a good aperitif or a drink to pair with a meal. It’s rather drinkable. (645 characters)

Pale yellow, chill haze, carbonation streams, three fingers of level white foam.

Nose is fresh cut grass, hay, and a dash of lemon.

Soft, sweet malt beginning, a stepping stone not a foundation. Some earthiness. Rising bitterness. Big bite at the swallow. Lingering bitterness.

Soft mouthfeel.

Good pilsner. (311 characters)

A: A straw colored beer with excellent clarity. The rocky white head fades to a ring of foam and a thin film of bubbles.

S: Hello Saaz hops! Lots of spicy and floral Saaz with some light grassy notes and moderately-strong Pilsner malt. There is a bit of biscuit and bread to malt aroma.

T: A medium, spicy hops flavor and bitterness with the moderate honey, malt flavor of the Pilsner malt. There are some secondary malt characters of biscuit and bread but the balance of this beer is fairly bitter. There balance of flavors is pretty good but it falls apart a bit with a little harshness in the finish.

O: A crisp, hop focused, bitter beer that is slightly unbalanced but to be fair the brew suggested an enjoy by date about six weeks back. It's still a pretty decent beer but I can imagine this is a very good beer when it's fresh and I'll keep an eye out for next years release. I greatly appreciate a brewer that will put an bottle on or enjoy by date; when you're getting a hoppy beer you want to know that sort of thing. (1,031 characters)

Appearance:
A thick white and bubbly head with bubbles that seem to reach out and cling to every centimeter of glass is the first thing you see. The body is a light blonde color with mild haziness and filled with carbonation. The head sticks around or a while and there’s a nice thick lacing to mark every sip you take.
Smell:
Light malts and lemon zest
Taste:
Light malts and lemon zest followed by hops and then the malt. There is a slight earthy flavor in there too and a slight alcohol taste as you swallow.
Mouthfeel:
Crisp and light bodied, the lively carbonation really makes this a refreshing beer.
Overall:
Light, crisp, refreshing and very tasty. This is a must try pilsener (686 characters)

Pours a clear pale yellow, crisp-looking body, fizzy with a white finger-width of head. Some lacing builds.
Smells like a citrusy, lightly spiced, biscuity pilsner. Refreshing scent.
Tastes like a pilsner with the malts I love about them, with light lemon-pepper favor, and this one finishes with a grassy/ mineral bite. Drinks light and peppery.
It feels crisp, smooth, medium carbonated and yet the liquid feels on the thin side.
Overall, a nice pilsner from a great brewery. (481 characters)

As usual, always happy to try something new from Smuttynose.

Nice looking beer. Nose is very bready, yeasty, and somewhat sweet. Crisp tangy flavor. Full and consistent. Very German in execution. It's going quite nicely with my sausages that I'm having for lunch. Another good one from Smuttynose. (298 characters)

Best by 11/13/13.Poured into a pilsner dulled lemon tinged lighter golden with a sticky half finger white head atop,a decent amount of broken lace left behind as it settled.I get a whiff of floral and herbal hops right up front with a tinge of iron and bread dough, northern German hopped up pilsner is what Iam thinking.Pretty dry and crisp on the palate with a mineral tinge, leafy and floral hop profile, and a firm bready base although not over done in the doughy department.A clean hoppy pils but with real flavor,it's gonna go good with the sausage and sauerkraut in the slow cooker. (586 characters)

12 ounce bottle with best before dating (11/14/12) purchased just the other day from DeCicco's in Ardsley, NY.

Pours very light and very clear. Near white head, shows moderate retention, before going to a thicker film and leaving just some quickly departing bits of lacing.

Sniff of some light sweet malts.

Light and easy drinking, hints of rye and lime. Dangerously sessionable. Clean and straight forward. Decent pilsner. (426 characters)

A - Poured into a pint glass with a light hazy straw color and a quick to disappear head.
S - Grain, light malt like most pilsner
T - mild grassy and a hint of citrus. Herbal, a little lemon. A nice hop character
M - Light body and mild carbonation. A dry finish.
O - Easy to drink, light and refreshing. A good Pilsner worthy of a try. (339 characters)

I enjoy saying "Vunderbar"!

A-Vunderbar pours a foggy straw yellow hue. Head is superb. It has the consistency and color of frothed milk. It's also about a half-inch high and it doesn't die off very much (if at all). Quite an inculpable looking Pils.

S-The hops are lemony and grassy. The malt is of dried biscuit and Saltine cracker. Light honey notes. Pretty candid in the nose. Clearly a Pils, and it doesn't deviate from style guidelines.

T-Hey this is pretty tasty. Buttered bread and graham crackers. Also some lightly spiced honey. Grainy as well. Hops are of the lemony citrus breed. Also some Noble grassy hoppiness. The more I sip, the ore I notice the lemon zest and the honey.

M-The carbonation is animated. Bubbles rush over the tongue. Body is on the light side of medium. Crisp and semi-clean.

O/D-Pretty good, but I am struggling to see why this is in a four pack. It's a pretty standard Pils. Just pack it up like a normal sixer. Anyway, it's pretty enjoyable, but I struggle to find anything truly memorable about this beer. Its very solid, but also unspectacular. (1,088 characters)

A cloudy straw colored beer with a white head.

A faint smell. Sweet floral hops.

Light side of medium bodied.

Watery mouthfeel at first.
Thin malts, with a citrusy lemon flavor and a slightly bitter finish.

Very refreshing.
This would make for a nice summer beer. (270 characters)

I love when I find a brewer that's willing to experiment, but consistently good. Smutty Nose is up there with Stone and Elysian in this regard.

UPDATE: after I wrote this I discovered one of the best experimenters - Carton - right in my back yard. Again enjoyed this with garden peppers, tomatoes over prima vera pasta (except in Oct!)

A: I agreed that it's an odd pour for a pilsner - being cloudy, straw yellow with a rich foamy white-head. BUT WHO CARES?!?!? It's a beautiful pour with sticky lacing and a pear body. Bravo!

S- big lemony, pear aroma - with crackers and yeast - dry and welcoming. Like a german wine, some fruit, but dry. (But it can be slightly sour) (Not like a wheat beer, no cloves or spice or banana or gum. yay!)

T follows the smell. it is smooth with lemony, up front yeast flavor and a nice shift to malt. Unique. More hops and a beautiful dry finish at the finale. Lovely food beer (fish, sausages, or in my case pirogis with fresh garden peppers and tomatoes and tomato sauce for me)

F: light bodied as it should be, but with a creamy mouthfeel. carbonation gives a zesty kick. Good fruit and lemon lingers on the palate, again like a great German wine.

O This beer is a home run. It's not ilke other pilsners but the carbonation, food pairing, lemon, and lightness make it one. Bravo! I am moving this brewer up another well-deserved notch and so should you!

Returned to taste off Full Sail & other pilsners and it won in my book - 10-17-14. (1,485 characters)

Pours a hazed gold with a barely there head. Smells of huge herbal, grassy hops. Very straight forward pils malt aroma and clean yeast. Subdued hop flavor with hardly any balancing bitterness. Crisp pale malts. Slightly sweet. Very gentle carbonation. Light to medium body. This is tasty and super clean, but it needs more character. (341 characters)
