APPEARANCE: Nearly as dark as a stout with a sticky, milk-chocolate head. Lots of lacing.
SMELL: Dark, roasty malts with a hint of fruity sweetness. I also pick up an undercurrent of coffee.
MOUTHFEEL: Medium-bodied with a fair amount of carbonation-driven bite on the tongue and cheeks. Mind you, this porter is not really bitter, it's just very crisp.
TASTE: Up front, the dark malts produce a sharp, almost woody taste nicely balanced with notes of caramel and bitter chocolate. The finish produces a nutty tang. Really fantastic stuff!
DRINKABILITY: If you like bite with your beer, then this is a fine session porter. The ABV isn't that high, so you'll be able to enjoy more than a few if you want to (and I'd want to).
VERDICT: This porter really lives up to its name! It's a very earthy, sharp, fairly-complex porter. That said, it's very accessible. I'd love to pair this beer with a nice, juicy steak.
