12 ounce bottle, poured into a Sierra 30 bulb snifter. Freshness best by May 2011 notched on label. Not my first time with this beer, first time reviewing it.
Watching the pour a really nice dark brown to just shy of coffee black as it gathers in the glass it becomes dense and stout looking with a tremendously solid inch and a half thick foam stand that is very mocha brown and rich looking.
Aromas are blend of roasted grain, charred steak, cocoa, darkly toasted bread, homemade waffles and a kick of earthy herbal hops. Inviting and rich, the aroma remains consistent and fluid throughout drinking.
Flavor is a perfect blend to the nose, the hops appear first as grassy herbal tones and then are met with toasted breads and roastiness, potatoes char roasted on the grill with herbs and a touch of bittersweet chocolate before a snap of bitterness drives the finish.
The body is medium, with a moderate carbonation and a slight slight touch of grainy astringency. The beer finishes moderately dry with a good melding of roasty grains, carbonation and bitterness balancing the sweet malt tones.
One of my favorite standard beers from any brewery in America. And one of the few where the bottle version is nearly as perfect as the draft.

Best by 10/01/14 at 45 degrees into snifter
Aroma of roasted malt and chocolate
Head large (5.5cm), light brown, fizzy/frothy, rapidly diminishing 3 mm ring
Lacing excellent - thick layer covering inside of glass
Body dark brown/black, opaque
Flavor of bitter roasted malt, dark chocolate, and some coffee; no hops, no alcohol, no diacetyl. Ends rapidly leaving a slight bitterness behind.
Palate medium, creamy, lively carbonation
A decent porter lacking the fruity esters and hop bitterness.
