12 oz. bottle. Best by 01/16/13.
Very dark inky brown body. Viscous. Small finger of creamy, light khaki head. Good lacing. Lots of charred, roasted malts on the nose. Good blend of milk chocolate, dark chocolate, espresso, and peat. Accents of vanilla, nougat, and dark fruits.
Bitterish roasted malts and coffee up front. Tannic and peaty. Smoky, charred roasted barley, cocoa nibs, and semi-sweet chocolate mix on the palate. Peaty, smoky, charred character increases into the finish that is dominated by coffee bitterness and dark chocolate. Medium body with a smooth, oily feel. Delicious and perfect for the coming cold.

Poured from a bottle into a tulip glass at around 50°F
Appearance: Thick pour; Black, no light coming through, with a thick two finger root beer float-like head that sticks around. It sure does look the part!
Smell: Chocolate, roasted malts, coffee, and a hint of smoke; The aromas are extremely clean and satisfying.
Taste: Rich chocolate and heavy roasted malts. Great smoky and burnt espresso-like aftertaste. Huge flavors for 6.0% abv.
Mouthfeel: Heavy medium; Very full-bodied and chewy for a regular porter.
Overall: This may very well be my favorite porter that I've personally tried and one of my favorite beers in general. It gives Founders a serious run for its money. Right when you think the flavors have subsided, they keep coming with a fulfilling, lingering aftertaste. It demands your attention at relatively low abv. Considering that this is practically the cheapest craft beer by the case in my area (yes, even more so than Sierra Nevada), it has been my go to beer this winter as I've bought a few cases. Porters are often too thin and lack flavor, but this, Founders, and Edmund Fitzgerald keep me coming back to the style, especially on a chilly night. Robust and world class indeed!
