In a word, "mind-blowing"! This beer is so smooth that even Lando Calrissian would be proud.
Pour is an opaque black, with just a hint of "root-beer" brown a the edges when held against bright light. The head is a warm tan, with stiff suds, leaving photogenic lacing as it slowly dissolves.
The nares are immediately confronted with a mix of baker's chocolate, molasses, earth, coffee and hops.
The flavor is undoubtedly dark chocolate and roasted malts, but the finish is blessed with a smooth and lingering light "hoppiness" that sits nicely until it fades a minute or two later.
It goes down smooth, but lets you know it's there.
It's simple, yet well executed. This is exactly what a porter should be. Drinking this ale straight from the refrigerator would be a sin. Rather it is served best just cooler than room temp, IMO, which allows the flavor and aroma to be best appreciated. I cannot recommend a better porter to anyone who enjoys the style.
A seasonal "elixir of the gods". Thank you, Smuttynose.

Best by 10/01/14 at 45 degrees into snifter
Aroma of roasted malt and chocolate
Head large (5.5cm), light brown, fizzy/frothy, rapidly diminishing 3 mm ring
Lacing excellent - thick layer covering inside of glass
Body dark brown/black, opaque
Flavor of bitter roasted malt, dark chocolate, and some coffee; no hops, no alcohol, no diacetyl. Ends rapidly leaving a slight bitterness behind.
Palate medium, creamy, lively carbonation
A decent porter lacking the fruity esters and hop bitterness.

On tap at Boneyard Bistro in Sherman Oaks, CA.
Pours an opaque super dark brown with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Foamy swaths of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa, and char aromas. Taste is much the same with cocoa, char, and citrus zest flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of roast and hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer with a nice balance of roast and hop aspects.
