Notes & Commercial Description:
Beer added by: BeerAdvocate on 10-18-2000

This hearty, mahogany colored ale is brewed to evoke the dark, full-bodied ales that were a favorite of dockworkers and warehousemen (hence the name “Porter”) in 19th century London. It is a good bet that when Dickens’ Mr. Pickwick sat down for a pint, we would have been drinking an ale much like our Robust Porter. This is a smooth and very drinkable beer, characterized by its well-balanced malt and hops, plus subtle notes of coffee and chocolate.

Poured on-tap and served in a tumbler pint, the beer is a very dark brown coloring with ruby highlights around the edging, with a low profile, sparse, foamy, milk chocolate colored head. Aromas of dark roasted coffee and cocoa nib, with dark fruit sweetness that is subtle in its presence. Flavors are well blended on a dry, robust body. Plum sweet in the background of the bitter, dry roasted coffee characteristics. A kick of dark chocolate shows up on the palate here and there, keeping the flavors dynamic. The beer hangs on the glass as you drink, and the aftertaste is a deliciously bitter, solid chocolate and coffee flavor. The finish has a slight linger, which transitions into a dry, almost astringent finish that cleans the palate, leaving a fresh feel to dive back in for more. Very tasty Porter...well put together from beginning to end.

Served out of a 12 ounch bottle and into a stemless wine glass.
Appearance-black, almost purple with a 1 finger head that lingers.
Smell-Roasted Malt, notes of burnt coffee and expresso, dark chocolate.
Taste-tastes of dark roasted malts, dark chocolate, and coffee, starts with a bite and then has a nice mellow finish.
Mouthfeel-nice.
Overall-This porter came in a variety pack of Smuttynose that I had bought for a tailgate, I really like their IPA and find it pleasant. I did not end up drinking this at the tailgate but consumed much later. I have to say I was not expecting much of this beer for some reason, but it was very solid. If I was in the mood for a porter I would reach for this again.

Poured into a pint glass. Reviewed alongside Stone Smoked Porter.

A: Dark brown/black with two-finger, tan, creamy head that lasted a long time. Really good lacing.

S: Sweet and roasted aroma. Coffee and chocolate.

T: Moderate sweetness and moderate bitterness. Chocolate and coffee. Roasted, charred flavor balances well with the bitterness. Roasted qualities dominate in the finish.

M: Medium bodied with soft carbonation. Ridiculously smooth.

O: Fantastic head and mouthfeel. This and the Stone Smoked Porter are both excellent American porters. I would call it a tie.

On tap at Good Foods Award marketplace in SF, poured into a plastic cup. Beer pours a dark brown with a finger of tan foamy head. Head dissipates to collar of foam and a even brown film on the surface. Decent carbonation visible at the edge of the cup.

Nose is dark roasted malt and some herbal hops. Maybe some milk chocolate, but really not much aroma.

Taste is dominated by very dark roasted malt, bitter and astringent. Some milk chocolate tries its best to balance things out, with the herbal hops coming in near the end for some additional flavor. Medium finish, with lingering chocolate malt, astringent roast lasting quite a while.

Medium body with lively prickly carbonation.

Pours a very dark brown, huge tan head to it. Smell is of chocolate and coffee. Taste is medium to full bodied, great complexity and flavors going on. Great coffee and chocolate tastes come through, with a nice backing of hops to make an overall smooth beer. Absolutely delicious and one of the better porters I've tried.

from variety pack picked up locally. poured into a duck rabbit snifter.

a - poured a watery brown black with a generous mocha colored frothy head. pretty chunky with nice lacing.

s - quite nice roasted malt. good chocolate, some mild coffee, a bit milky...kind of milk stouty, but has that porter char. really nice and appetizing.

t - just as robust as the smell. fantastically balanced roasted malts and chocolate. good char on the finish.

m - great mouth. medium to full bodied...robust for certain.

o - overall, smuttynose always impresses. the robust porter is no exception. the chocolate and coffee flavors are well balanced with some good roast and char. well done porter.

At the time of this review, this is the #19 top beer on the beeradvocate.com "Top Beers - American Porter" list. Beer served in a shaker pint.

Beer is black with a nice thin brown head with low retention, moderate carbonation, a little lacing.

Aroma is a little roasty, a little sweet.

Beer is medium in body and pretty flawless. A nice beer / porter all around. Smooth on the palate, sweetness and a mild bitterness at the end connect well with a nice finish. A good always available standby beer.

A - Pours black with a tan/orange-ish 2 finger head. Nice lacing on the glass when the contents get consumed.

S - Picking up a lot of malt. Also has notes of coffee and dark chocolate.

T - The malt is very pronounced on the front. The dark chocolate and coffee some out when a slight bitterness hits you at the end.

M - Great carbonation. Somewhat watery/thin feel

O - I don't reach for many porters. But, this has turned me on the style of beer. A very well done porter where everything it does seems to compliment itself.
