This hearty, mahogany colored ale is brewed to evoke the dark, full-bodied ales that were a favorite of dockworkers and warehousemen (hence the name “Porter”) in 19th century London. It is a good bet that when Dickens’ Mr. Pickwick sat down for a pint, we would have been drinking an ale much like our Robust Porter. This is a smooth and very drinkable beer, characterized by its well-balanced malt and hops, plus subtle notes of coffee and chocolate.

Black colored beer with a light brown, frothy head. Some lacing. Pretty appealing looking beer.

Nice, smooth, sweet malty aroma. Hints of chocolate and coffee.

Roasted malt flavor throughout. A slightly metallic sharp flavor up front with a slightly bitter finish.

Medium bodied mouthfeel. Carbonation is too fizzy for my taste, and this style. Bitterness Lingers.

A decent porter. I expected more in the flavor and mouthfeel department.

This is the only beer I have ever had that truly earns a perfect score. Perfect coffee-milk colored head, with a dark, rich body that is very opaque. Only complaint is a simple aesthetic: I would love to see a little mahogany around the edges, but this is dark dark through and through. Smell is a perfect blend of chocolaty sweetness and freshly roasted espresso. Taste toes the same line. It is actually quite roasty, but the smooth chocolaty wash that moves from front to back of the mouth to keep it all together. Mouthfeel is not too heavy so that it doesn't become desert like, but full bodied indeed. It finishes almost dry, like a fresh shot of espresso.

Absolutely phenomenal. This is just an example of how to do something simple, but to perfection. This isn't high grav, this isn't aged in oak, this isn't brewed with coffee, this is just beer and it is every bit as exciting and flavorful as anything. Hats off to the Smutty Robust Porter.

A - Very dark verging on black in color, can barely see through some of the edges. One and a half finger tan head that sticks around and leaves decent lacing.

S - Dark roasted malts a touch of hops and some chocolate and coffee.

T - You initially get dark roasted malt flavor that then goes to slight hop flavor and after a few seconds the coffee and chocolate come and say hello. Very nice use of hops that doesn't overpower the beer or the other flavors of the beer.

M - Medium verging on full bodied with a touch of carbonation.

O - Great porter that I'd recommend to anyone.

A: Dark brown, nearly black color. A bit of ruby highlights around the edges. A towering tan head forms with good retention. Rings of sticky lace is left behind.
S: Roasted malt, chocolate, sweet toffee. Slightly astringent, but not bad.
T: Big milk chocolate flavor, toasted bread, roasted malt, but not astringent at all. Sweet toffee. This is a classic porter. Excellent.
M/D: Medium to full body with good carbonation. Very smooth. So easy to drink. All day with this one.

An excellent porter. One of my favorites in the US. Pretty much perfect for the style. Highly recommended.

A full bodied porter that starts with a dark fruit on the pallet followed by heavy notes of coffee and dry dark chocolate that lingers. Has a thin head the quickly disappears to nothing, the beer is pitch black and robust. A bigger hop profile than more porters.

What an aptly named brew. I've had more robust porters, but they were too robust. This one is just right.

It has a nice, well roasted robustness about it. It looks good in the glass and has a nice aroma. I think it will sweeten up as it warms. Overall, a porter I would buy again if I was in the mood for a nice porter that isn't over the top.
