Notes/Commercial Description:
This hearty, mahogany colored ale is brewed to evoke the dark, full-bodied ales that were a favorite of dockworkers and warehousemen (hence the name “Porter”) in 19th century London. It is a good bet that when Dickens’ Mr. Pickwick sat down for a pint, we would have been drinking an ale much like our Robust Porter. This is a smooth and very drinkable beer, characterized by its well-balanced malt and hops, plus subtle notes of coffee and chocolate.

Deep black color with a thin caramel head with short retention.
Aroma with lots of slightly spiced cocoa, coffee and muffled dark fruits.
Nice flavor with notes of chocolate, some espresso, licorice, earthy and piney hops, charred wood and grapefruits. Dry aftertaste with a medium bitterness and a long lasting roasted note.
Medium body with mild but vivid carbonation.
Flavorful and superbly balanced Porter. Bold mocha roasted notes and a good complexity and hop profile: earthy, citrusy and piney. Huge drinkability, a truly American Porter, not radical.

Poured into a glass pint. Very dark beer with a thick brown head, moderate amount of lacing that sticks for the duration of the drink. Smell is raisin and coffee with hint of piney hops. Taste, absolutely delicious. Raisin, toasted caramel, dark burnt coffee, piney hops, and perhaps date or plum. Mouthfeel is moderate carbonation, very smooth. Overall, an outstanding porter. Well done by Smuttynose especially as I'm not a fan of most of their brew.
