Presentation: 22 oz. bomber bottle purchased for $6. Not bad at all for a bourbon barrel aged stout. Chilled and poured into my Cigar City tulip glass.

Appearance: Dark brown to almost black in color. Pours a really nice, two finger begie head that sticks before receding into a nice thin lacing.

Aroma: Milk chocolate, sweet cherries, belgian yeast tones and some pretty noticable alcohol presence. Maybe just a touch of vanilla and bourbon, but the dark fruit and clove notes from the yeast overpower any barrel. Interestingly enough, as this warms, the belgian yeast tones really start to become dominate.

Taste: Milk chocolate and roasted coffee notes provide some nice backbone and the stout qualities to this beer. Lots of dark fruit and cherries with some clove and fused alcohol. As this warm, the stout qualities are lessening and the belgian notes are getting stronger. The alcohol definitely is present throughout and I would guess this beer is a bit higher than teh ABV listed. The bourbon from the barrel is barely present, if at all.

Mouthfeel: Lighter than average body from the style. Definitely on the thin side. Carbonation is pretty spot on though.

Overall, an interesting take on a belgian style stout that feels more belgian than stout. The barrel notes are almost so subtle that I completely miss them. The alcohol is also not as mellowed as I would expect. Not a bad beer at all, but a bit of a letdown for a favorite style of mine.

Gorgeous ebony color pours under a thick, cloud like head of brown foam. The color is radiant and the head had moderate retention.

I get dark fruit on the nose, chocolate malt, creme, molasses and maple. It seems to change as its warms.

Really good oatmeal stout character with strong chocolate malt and what I perceive as toasted oats. Relatively dry this has some creamy qualities. I get a little barrel personality but it does seem to crop up at times. This has more chocolate features with a touch of caramel.

The feel is dry but has a duplicitous creamy side. Some alcohol heat hits the chest but for the most part it's easy to drink.

The barrel characteristics are not abundant enough to really raise the score. I enjoyed this but had you told me this was a breakfast stout I'd fallen for it.

22oz bomber, a gift

Served in half acre goblet - dark bodied with a light mocha head. I am not a Smuttynose enthusiast, though I know they are more capable than this. Smuttynose calls this a 'belgian style stout'. I guess I should be honest and state that I think the words 'belgian' and 'stout' should not be combined - the clash of yeast strains and dark roasty malt is very offputting to me. They sat this sucker in bourbon barrels for a bit too, but that's lost in the shuffle. Too bitter, too roasty - a mess

Pour is extremely dark brown to the point of a black hole. Minimal mocha receding head clings to the sides.

Aromas of baking chocolate, Concord grape juice, roasted grain and malt. Nice sweetness to it with coffee and faint alcohol. To me a classic Belgium ale.

Taste initially is bittersweet chocolate. Caramel cola, star anise, sweet malt and hops. Temps 55-60' yield more pronounced oaky bourbon with vanillas and Belgium sugars.

Medium to heavy bodied with a creamy texture as you savor this. Each sip has the aroma of roasted grain and the drying bitterness lays on the tongue awhile. Some stickiness on the lips.

Not over the top barrel aged brew yet satisfying and I would even go as far to say that this is a sleeper in the world of whale hunting. I've had a few of these and look forward to this for years to come. These guys and gals always keep their craft extremely well priced and a solid fare! Can't find that whale, give this a go!
