Pours black as midnight oil with a tall head of coffee colored foam - good retention.

Smells of coffee, chocolate, plumb, earthy, woody, nutty - a beautifully complex nose.

Creamy mouth with a chocolate coating and a robust body big on coffee flavor. The dark fruit/plumb notes are subdued in the background but come forward with some sweet caramel malt notes. A chewy malt mouthfeel with a lingering woody fruit finish. This one is full of flavor all over the place = a very tasty brew.

Pours a beautiful dark and rich body thats capped by a large and sticky tan head. Not sure how you improve on this one. Roasted malts right up front on the nose with a nice mix of dark fruits and some wood and vanilla hints as well.

Nice roasty stout flavors on the palate with a sweeter side than normal. Chocolate and vanilla mix in with a some fruity flavors as well. A bit lighter on the mouth than many stouts but it certinaly doesn't hurt the beer. Makes it all the more drinkable.

Not sure why this had so many lackluster reviews. Anyone expecting a big bold imperial stout clearly doesn't know how to read a beer label. A relatively moderate 8.4% ABV makes for a nice midweek drink and the Belgian yeast certainly adds a nice fruity quality you don't find in Smuttys other stouts/porters.

Dark, dark brown where no light shines through. If I didn't know any better, I'd swear this is a stout. Light head, even for a bar pour. Some runny ring lace.

There's an element of a stout to the aroma (burnt patent malt?). Unlike most Browns, this one has a bit hop nose.

Starts with the black patent malt,which remains throughout the entire taste. There's an alcohol presence up front. Dark chocolate and mocha are the initial flavors. Relatively thin body with a high carbonation. The aftertaste has a dollop of bitterness with the aforementioned black patent flavors.

Poured from a bomber into a tulip glass.

A: Hazy, dark brown color with less than one finger of diminishing mocha-tinted foam head. Scant lacing remains on the glass and beige sediment remains at the bottom.

S: Dark vinous fruit, anise, and an integrated combination of scorched malt and bitter chocolate. No alcohol is detected.

T: Begins off-dry, with early vinous fruit and heavy yeast metabolites. Acidity is mild into the middle where refined roasted malt is compartmentalized by persistent banana esters. Although the entire profile is a potent mix of earth and almonds, it becomes distinct during the finish as some of the yeast complexity eases. Although alcohol is suggested in the form of fancy liquor, it does not stand out.

M: Thin to medium viscosity, wet and acidic on the palate, with moderate carbonation.

D/O: A stout with stronger-than-normal yeast influences, this beer delivers on the Belgian promise but neglects the purported barrel aspect. The sensory qualities are divided between rich earth and yeast-affected fruit, probably to the detriment of this beer's overall character.

This beer was disgusting. I was really expecting something pretty awesome because Smutty usually delivers the awesome- not this time. looked nice enough in the glass; dark brown almost black with a nice three finger head.

The smell is where this went south fast. Smelled a bit funky and like old leather shoes. Really no trace of any barrel influence. The taste pretty much follows with some oak and maybe a touch of vanilla. Hard to tell what's buried, if anything, under the initially unappealing flavors of musty leather and weird earthy root like flavors. There's no dark fruit or real sweetness- or if there is it's just getting muddled away in the rest of the weirdness going on here.

This beer is just a mess that has too much going on and ends up going nowhere fast. Drainpour #3 in my life I think.

Poured into a Duvel tulip on 1/30/13

Bottle conditioned in 2012

The color is a medium caramel brown, though it it close to black in the glass. A nearly three finger head deflates slowly over several minutes leaving a few spots of lace lingering. Thin retention. Good lace starts in about halfway through the glass.

Kind of an odd aroma with this one. Roasted chocolate and molasses, bourbon-soaked raisins, prunes, candi sugar, yeast spice, leafy herbal notes, wood, dark cherries, apple butter and blackberries all with a large helping of spiced bread. It never quite comes together.

The spices in this thing, oh my goodness. Zinneke is a ringer of a bedfellow for the spice rack crowd. Dry and tongue-scathing. It's a big jumble of spiced bread, nippy whiskey and yeast. Scorched chocolate and some dark roast. Modest fruit notions. The chocolate is slightly sweeter and lush as the beer warms up.

Medium feel with a teething grittiness from the spices and accentuated carbonation. The finish is spicy and charred oak on the dry, dry, dry finish. I do like the feel.

For what it's worth, drinking this beer leaves me with some of the same palate sensations as smoking a cigar. As an interesting beer, 10-12 ounces would have been more than sufficient. The whole bomber is drinkable but taxing.

A: Pours a very dark brown. Enormous fluffy medium brown head. Fades slowly with top notch head retention, but leaves only the lightest skeletonwork of lacing behind.

S: Dark fruits and decent roasted malt. Raisin, prunes, fig and chocolate to be more specific.

T: Lots of dark fruit up front, similar to the aroma. Some caramel with decent chocolate, turning bitter and very earthy into the middle. Finish is drying with chalky char and smoke. Lingering dark fruits and earth/char in the aftertaste.

M: Medium bodied and smooth. Quite dry in the long aftertaste.

O: Not a bad belgian stout. Very fruity. Lacks much barrel character outside of the drying char and oak. Lacks a lot of roasted malt character too, it gets lost in the mix with the drying oak and dark fruits and earthiness. Decent but nothing spectacular.

Poured from a 22oz brown bomber into a clear glass snifter. No precise bottling date although "Bottle conditioned in" notched at 2012 on left side of label. Purchased at Market Street WIneshop (Charlottesville, VA) for $7.99.

A: Very dark brown to almost black with brownish edges and short 1 finger cap of off-white head with below-average retention and no lacing.

S: Strong sweet banana aromas with light clove note followed by milk chocolate and a very slight roasted note.

T: The yeast character is also strong in the flavor as in the aroma with a lot of clove and banana. It tastes like a chocolate dipped banana in a lot of ways, very sweet but with a lightly roasted edge. I am not digging the Belgian character that much as the clove note doesn't work well with the sweeter stout notes. A bit of sour dryness in the finish. I get no barrel character at all in this beer aside from possibly the dry finish.

M: Very smooth with low-to-average carbonation and medium body at most.

O: Pretty disappointing and not one I'll revisit. Very odd combination of flavors that really don't mesh well at all and leave an muddled beer in the final rundown.

Bomber from Premier Gourmet, Buffalo, which was graciously shared with me at a recent tasting. 5.99 a bomber - good brew for the price.

Poured into a goblet. Dark chestnut brown, about a half inch of head, recedes to a thick ring.

Nose is really something. Nice mild coffee, caramel, whiskey, and a nice nutty smell as well. Maybe a touch of Belgian yeast, but really I had this as an American brown.

Nice sipping beer, very smooth. Good roasted malt, light coffee and the whiskey is certainly present, but not overpowering. Nutty finish with a touch of puckery hops. Not getting a lot of Belgian ale in the taste either.

The Belgian mouthfeel I think holds this brew back a bit - it lacks that thickness that the tastes seem to demand, and the carbonation is a touch high.

Nice brew, tasty sipper. Belgian dark ale blends well with the bourbon aging, and though the mouthfeel wasn't doing it for me, it was still an enjoyable brew and priced just right!

Pour black with a thin mocha head that faded fast. The smell was a nice mix with chocolate, vanilla, sweet notes, and some yeast. Big flavors, starts sweet with the higher ABV being very apparent. The bourbon barrel flavors are there along with the chocolate and coffee notes. This is much more a stout then a belgian. The mouthfeel could have been a bit heavier, but still smooth, and nice flavors. Overall the flavors are huge and tasty, but would have enjoyed it more if it had less of the alcohol flavors.

(3.75) A: Black with a crimson tinge and a tall bubbly mocha coloured foam head. Blanket recedes promptly to a ring with minimal lacing.

(4.5) S: Very aromatic dark fruits (plums, dates, raisins), dark chocolate, black licorice, variety of tropical fruits (banana and peach), and generally quite a herbal (anise-like) aroma. Waves of mellow and boozy whiskey. This is excellent stuff. Diverse and fruity-herbal aromas that are very enticing.

(4.0) T: Similar to aroma with those bold and boozy dark fruits upfront (mostly figs, plums, cherries) that transition to tropical fruits (mostly banana) and roasted malt flavour (dry cocoa) on the backend. Flavours of molasses, anise, and clove compliment the primary tastes well. Fairly bitter and dry with smooth bourbon and oaky notes. Very good.

(4.0) M: Full bodied with a moderate carbonation. Oily and chalky with a boozy warmth.

(4.0) D: Very good. Stout characteristics are interesting in this with a dry roasted malt flavour coming through, but works very well together with more belgian strong dark ale qualities.

Pours an opaque black with a thick tan head

Smells of roasted malts, coffee, cappuccino, spicy yeast, and vanilla.

The roasted malt and coffee hit the tongue first followed by some of that spicy Belgian yeast and vanilla. A mild bitterness in the finish helps balance it out.

Perfect medium bodied carbonation.

This is a solid beer. Well balanced, complex, and perfect for a cold January night in upstate New York.

Pours an eefervescent mahogany/black with 2 fingers of caramel colored head. Zero head retention & lacing

S: Figgyness, plums brown sugar & some boozeyness

T: Roastyness, raisins, a touch of coffee & a touch of caramel up front, slight boozeyness as well. Carob & plums as this warms, some candi sugar & raisins & baker's chocolate & some boozey warming & vanilla/caramel notes. Finishes dry, sweet & fruitty & slightly warming with nice chocolatey notes

MF: Medium bodied with slight carbonation, some stickyness

A fairly complex, enjoyable & drinkable example of the style. As usual Smutty kicks ass

Pitch black with ruby edges and a finger's width brown head.

A big milk chocolate aroma with some Belgian yeast notes.

Chocolate, licorice, Belgian yeast, clove, and a touch of hop.

Smooth and creamy. Medium body.

A good dark ale. Solid flavors and aromas and easy to drink for a strong ale. Didn't get any Boubon flavor, but that's ok since it is a quality beer on it's own.

22oz bottle obtained at Tully's in Wells, ME. Pours an opaque black body with a quarter inch of light tan head. Espresso and dark chocolate make up the aroma. Espresso hits the palate first, with dark chocolate, nut, coming back to roasted coffee in the finish. Medium in body and carbonation. A nice toasty stout for the cold months. Roasty and dry.

A: Pours a woody black with a small tan head.

S: Cookie dough, mild roasted grain and coffee bean, some sweet spice and vanilla from the barrel.

T: Taste brings some mild roasted grain, banana esters, slight chocolate sweetness, some light tannic caramel and vanilla in the finish.

M: Creamy feel, medium-bodied.

O: Pretty good. 100% barrel-aging would make it a bit more memorable.

In my tulip glass this beer was near black in color. It had a dark tan head with a little bit of lace.

The aroma was dark fruit and cherry. Kind of toasty. Some vanilla

Nice taste. Toffee, sweet fruit/cherry. Some chocolate, and a little bit of vanilla.

This was a nice beer, just a little bit thinner than I thought it would be.

Still enjoyed it, though.

Poured into a snifter.

3.5 A: Black color. Light brown creamy/frothy head. Retention is about average and a decent sized ring of lacing is left.

4.0 S: Nice nose on this. Christmas cookie spiciness meshes well with smokiness from the bourbon. Sweet caramel, dark candi sugar, plum, prune, raisin, and tobacco. Smokey bourbon with notes of leather, vanilla, and oak. Sweet, spicy, and complex nose.

3.0 T: The taste is more bourbon flavored than the nose. Much of the spiciness and sweet maltiness gets lost behind leathery and smokey bourbon. Vanilla and oak. Missing depth from the base beer. That's about all there is to say.

3.0 M: Lighter medium body. Carbonation is a little bity without being spritzy or creamy. Just decent here.

3.0 D: Eh, it's alright, but it's nothing special. I've never been a huge fan of bourbon and Belgian, but I still can't help myself from giving it a try.

Served in a shaker pint glass.

Stumbled onto this bottle during a recent trip to a nearby Binny's and felt it would be perfect for our New Year's Eve festivities. It pours a a bleak black-brown topped by a finger of sandy tan foam. The nose comprises cocoa powder, dark chocolate, and very light bourbon. The taste brings in more of the same, with a stronger sense of whiskey. Not much Belgian character is to be found here, at least by my tongue's reckoning. The body is a light-leaning medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a fluid feel. Overall, a solid beer, though the lack of any Belgian character, the relatively thin feel of the proceedings, and the general lack of complexity in general lead to a kind of nigh-disappointment on my end. In other words: this is indeed a tasty and enjoyable beer, but nothing much more than that.

Pours a black color. 1/4 inch head of an off-tan color. Good retention and decent lacing. Smells of sweet malt, roasted malt, syrup, liquor, slight alcohol, and slight hop. Appearance: Pours a black body with a tall, churning, tan head that's steadily, slowly flattens out. A few stray dots of lace.

Smell: Initial sniffs revealing well-roasted malt, charred breadcrusts, and bitter chocolate. A vinous presence, noted notes of ripe banana, spice, and, upon warming, even some half-chewed bubblegum. Incredibly subdued barrel-aging quality in the nose, which could be easily missed, if not specifically mentioned on the bottle's label.

Taste: Roasty, toasty, and chocolaty, but not quite as hard or bitter as I'd anticipated from the nose. Dark fruits leaning towards plums, also a fair amount of banana. Light spicing. Growing chocolaty tone, along with the barrel character, which I'll assume was only a small portion, as it's fairly subtle. Some bitterness, some alcoholic warmth. Chocolaty, spicy, fruity finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. Medium carbonation. It's not exactly thin, but it's not the thickest brew around.

Overall: While not loved, it was well-liked.

Hints of vanilla, caramel, dark fruit and bourbon on the nose. Poured dark brown with a thank tan head and appears reddish brown in the light. Tastes of roasted malts, plums and raisins with a bourbon and dark chocolate finish. Decent overall, starts a little sweet and finished bitter.

Pours dark brown, almost black, with a tan foam head that reduces to a ring. Spotty lace.

Charred malt and french roast coffee in the nose; some dark fruit. A little cherry/bourbon too.

Coffee, boozy dark fruit, charred, carbonized malt, bitter chocolate, with a long bitter finish. It works, but not earth shattering.

Full bodied, good carbonation.

Overall, a solid stout with a little fruit. Not over-hopped, which is a plus for me, but not a smooth beer, with some charred bitter edges and boozy notes. All flavors are up front.

Pours a very dark brown body beneath the hn tan head which quickly dissolves leaving only the faintest ring of lacing around the glass.

Aromas of yeast, candied sugar and milk chocolate float from the glass with hints of roasted malt.

The flavor offers more hop presence than the nose would hint as well as a stronger roasted malt presence paired with the milk chocolate and previously mentioned Belgian yeast.

The body is medium to fuller with a fair amount of carbonation. So far this has been the only hint of oak barrels which shows up in the woody, yet sweet after taste.

I can appreciate wghat Smuttybose was looking to accomplish here and pretty much nailed it outside of the bourbon barrel aspect.
