I am down to the last 2 bottles of a 6-pack I bought last week at the Brewery ($9.00) so I reckon I should put my thoughts into bytes or bits, or whatever...

I had never tried this in its original, small-batch formulation, but I had a few samples vom Faß at Smutty last week and I really dug it.... Hence the 6-pack purchase. Poured into a nonic pint, it is a deep, clear, dark chestnut color. It's quite opaque, so much so that I can't tell how much carbo is swirling about. Despite the denseness of the color, there is no haze, and no sediment whatsoever in the bottle. The head is thin and fine, a mocha-hued layer of foam with some decent lacing. Aroma has a nice balance of some choco malt in addition to a good heap of rindy hops. It is quite smooth going down, and the body is a tad above medium.

Flavor-wise, it has a lovely base of lightly sweet choco. It leans a bit towards some mocha action here, too, before getting all hoppy on you. The hops are somewhat citrusy, with some pine and rind action going on. I really like the balance here, too, between the choco and the citrus; both aspects linger nicely. I foresee a few more 6-packs of this in my fridge in the future!! Well done, Smutty!! Prosit!!

From BeerAdvocate Magazine #85 (Feb 2014):

Big, Toasty, Juicy, Hoppy

A big, brawny, hopped-up Brown Ale? Yeah, we’re game. Toasty malt character in both the nose and palate. Warming esters show its actual size ... very warming. The hoppiness slaps our palates around a bit, ample bitterness with a clean pungent oily hop resin, and suggestions of orange pith and tobacco. Mild raisin and orange pulp tone within. Long toasty and warming finish. Not for the faint of palate—give it a whirl.

Hoppy is an understatement. Usually when that word is added to a style not normally known for it, it's mild. This has a big, bold, in your face west coast style hop presence. High on the bitterness, wonderful mouthfeel is sticky, prickly and full. Smell isn't amazing, a little subdued.

Without the (sweet) label, I would have pegged this for a Stone Bastard/variant. Not a bad thing in the least. Will definitely be drinking this one again!

Best by 6/13/14.Pours into a nonic a deep chesnut brown with some ruby red highlights a great looking creamy full one finger head that settles into a creamy mass.Aromas are on the lighter side with some roasted nuts, cocoa powder, and herbal hops showing thru.A great creamy feel, like a brown should be in my mind, very rich feeling.Flavors have some booze to them along with some sweetish cookie dough and molasses, the hops partially cut thru the sweetness providing earthiness and leafy/piney notes. This is a cool brown ale,the hops are big but so is the sweetness,it even gets a bit sticky after awhile.

This brew has a ton of body, thick. Lovely grain backbone protrudes poetically through a drape of hops. Piney citric notes complimented by earthy grassy hop tones.

Truly a nice drink. At 8.5% it is a remarkable buy for the $10 per six range depending on where you buy.

A must try.

In a bottle the beer was a very dark brown color with a thick tan head. There was a good deal of lace.

Sweet caramel aroma. Some fruit. A lot of earthy hops.

The earthy hops predominated. Caramel and toffee taste. A bit of fruit.

A nice hoppy brown ale. That sounds contradictory, but it worked very well. Would drink this anytime.

12 ounce bottle, best before( 6-18-14) dating.

Pours a nice looking rich, darker shade of almond amber, medium sized and lasting mocha head, leaving a thicker collar, tiny bubble film and fine low sheeting/spotted lacing.

Bold nose loaded with maple malts along with a whiff of piney hops.

Full throttle brown ale, rich, tasty and malted up with a healthy hop presence adding the intrigue and complexity.

Super smooth over the tongue and ends with a lingering malt/hopped up finish. Nice stuff. Go get some
