The bottle comes with a small vial of orange bitters. There's a frothy head on the initial pour, but it settles to a set of rim bubbles. Dark amber color and cloudy. Little lace.
Creamy and buttery aroma. Plenty of alcohol to the nose with a touch of hop bitterness at the end of the smell. Slightly sweet.
Very rich body with an equally low carbonation level. With the orange bitters, I think this beer is awful--it's orangey, oily and strongly alcoholic. Without the bitters, it's a much better beer (and the basis of this rating). The only commonality is the powerful warming alcohol. Not overly sweet, but there is a good dollop of hop spice.

22oz bottle into a red wine glass.
Appearance: Dark reddish brown. Long lasting frothy light tan head, thick lace wall in its wake.
Smell: Whoa, just straight oak and bourbon. Reminds me of the batch of Sebago Bourbon Barrel Aged Barleywine I reviewed (the next batch smelled more like birdseed, but was still amazing). Straightforward, but what's wrong with that?
Taste: Whoa again, is this a strange beer or what? They must have used quite a bit of orange peel, because it's heavy in the taste. Creamy body lifts up the big American oak aftertaste. The malt is unassuming (and the hops absent), just acting as a conduit for the thick oak and orange peel.
A weird one, but I like it.
Mouthfeel: Full bodied. Creamy. Moderate carbonation, but enough. Not dry but not at all sugary either. Very very nice; probably was good going into the barrels, and even better afterward.
Overall: Creative beer, and very tasty. Definitely worth picking up if you go to Julio's and like malty, oaky beers. Smuttynose remains underrated by most beer geeks.

22o bottle poured into a globe.
A: Red-orange color. Awesome clarity. Pillowy off-white head retains well at a half an inch. Small dots of lacing.
S: Barrel aromas of bourbon, vanilla, and oak are forward on the nose. Sweet malt notes of caramel and perhaps some candy apple shell. Fruity whiffs of marmalade and juicy red berries are tight and subtle. More distinct orange scents come out as the beer warms.
T: Sweet malt base of caramel with hints of crust and toast. Oily and zesty orange flavors cut through the heavy malt base. Oak and bourbon pick up steam on the back end and become more prominent in general as the beer warms. Mild spicy alcohol. Finishes with caramel, toasted grain, and drying oak and bourbon.
M: Big, thick body. Chewy. Citrus oils. Carbonation feels forced, but works well to provide a firm but gentle scrubbing action. This seems to play up the citrus flavors.
O: Feels like an experimental one-off bottling of Smutty barleywine. A pretty decent beer though. The orange peel takes over perhaps a bit more than it should, but a pretty solid offering all around for a more spur of the moment, account-special release.
