Originally released as part of our Short Batch Series, our Rhye IPA arose from our desire to play with rye malt. It's built on a Finestkind IPA chassis, with the following changes:

• We tweaked the grain bill adding 30% rye malt and swapped Aromatic malt for C-60. Rye adds a spicy note while Aromatic malt adds a more subtle flavor than C-60 but increases malt aroma.

• We lowered the mash rest temperature a few degrees, giving the final beer less body and more drinkability.

• We jacked up the dry hopping to four times the level of Finest Kind for big hop aroma.

For a rye based IPA this one is exceptional. Looks great, smell is subtle citrus aroma. Taste is extremely well balanced and very complex for an IPA. To explain, the rye/grain is noticable up front, then it gives way to a citrusy hoppiness and finishes very sweet and smooth without much bitterness at all. This may be one of the best rye IPAs I've had to date. Excellent.

Rye is very prevalent (in a good way). Smutty hop bill is still very much there. Earthy but very drinkable.

Pours a deep cloudy amber. The ecru head quickly dissipates to a thin collar. The nose is sweet and spicy. Orange marmalade plays well with the rye spiciness. Grapefruit hop scent comes through as well.

Taste is similar. Firm rye spiciness backed by hops and a surprising residual sweetness. A little too sweet for my tastes and I'm surprised to see the notes indicating it was mashed lower than Finest Kind IPA. Otherwise a nice balance between the rye and hops. Firm bitterness in the finish. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with a medium level of carbonation.

Bottle purchased at Nathaniel Square Corner Store in Rochester, NY.

This one pours a moderately dark brown, with a half inch head, and a really good amount of lacing.

This one smells really nice, with a big rye character, some floral/perfume aromas, and a good amount of pine.

This is a really pleasant surprise, it was quite tasty. The rye character is spicy and grainy, adding some pleasant bitterness, with a good amount of bitterness also from pine, and some floral character as well. It all comes together really nicely, and forms a coherent whole.

This is medium bodied, with a crisp and biting mouthfeel, and a moderate level of carbonation.

Another great beer from Smuttynose, they nailed this one.

Cloudy golden in color with tropical fruit and citrus coming through the nose. Sort of a dominate grapefruit in flavor with a slight tan head and very minimal lacing. Light and smooth with a creamy feel and no aftertaste and acceptable bitterness. Refreshing and very easy to drink. Poured into IPA glass and relatively fresh. Overall, another fantastic offering from Smuttynose!
