Notes & Commercial Description:
Beer added by: Bierman9 on 08-31-2013

Originally released as part of our Short Batch Series, our Rhye IPA arose from our desire to play with rye malt. It's built on a Finestkind IPA chassis, with the following changes:

• We tweaked the grain bill adding 30% rye malt and swapped Aromatic malt for C-60. Rye adds a spicy note while Aromatic malt adds a more subtle flavor than C-60 but increases malt aroma.

• We lowered the mash rest temperature a few degrees, giving the final beer less body and more drinkability.

• We jacked up the dry hopping to four times the level of Finest Kind for big hop aroma.

Pours into an impy nonic a dull hazed burnt orange infused medium golden with a terrific tightly formed one finger craterous white head that is not fading in the least bit, just great.Big grapefruit rind-like hops jump out at ya in the nose along with spicy rye,I like the fact that the rye plays a big role, lately some of the "hopped up rye" beers I have had leaves me wanting more rye.A fresh citric hop blasts greets the taste buds with the spicy rye coming in right afterwards making for a nice 1-2 punch,a firm lightly sweet bready base compliments the beer with the alcohol creeping a bit.Maybe the best Smuttynose beer I have had, this is what a big hoppy rye beer should be,fantastic. (690 characters)

Another winner from Smutty.
In a pint glass the beer was a brassy color with a thick white head. There was a lot of lace.

Aroma of citrus and piney hops, more on the citrus side. Spicy rye.

Taste agreed with the aroma. Big grapefruit, some pine. Great rye taste, with a kind of kick to it.

This beer was pleasantly hoppy, but balanced.

Very nice. (350 characters)

12oz brown bottle with a freshness date, sample from the brewery.

Nearly clear light amber hue, sexy lacing down the glass. Dank citrus nose. Subtle hop bitterness, more of numbing hop resin with a kick in the palate from the rye. Kickin smoothness, lush medium body. Easy drinking for a beer closing in on 7.0% abv. Bitter finish, on the dry side. Bold and wanting more sip to sip. (384 characters)

Pours hazy gold crowned with a 2” white moussey foam cap that produces excellent lace. Big grassy nose with spicy grain. Hop driven with some grapefruit rind and resin on the tongue with some rye spice. Medium body and carbonation. (234 characters)

Slightly hazed orangey apricot colored with an orangey beige head of thick and dimpled foam that lingers very long. Big hop aroma, resiny pine and orange rind, some toffee and cinnamon.

Big hoppy flavor with a mix of floral and pine, some orange rind. Good malt balance with notes of cinnamon and toffee.

Rich and full mouthfeel, creamy, filling and satisfying. Great beer. (375 characters)

Appears to be muddied orange with a gold glow. (Yeast poured in). Head is modest and leaves a nice foamy layer once it fades. Shifting lace strings and spots. Aroma is sweet, flowery, fruity and peppery. Lemon, tropical something, decaying pine needles, rye aromas and grains. Flavors match. Complimentary rye and hop bitterness that lingers. Pine resin crystals....and earthy too. Mouthfeel is pretty spectacularly tingly. Fluid and foamy. The bitterness continues to push on through. Perhaps a little tooo bitter but overall, yay Smuttynose! (543 characters)

Best by date of 08/18/15

Appearance - Pours clear and copper orange with a khaki colored finger width head. Fair retention; dissipates to a thin, broken layer of suds and a ring around the edge of the glass. Patchy lacing with good stick.

Smell - Citrus aroma with a peppery spice and a fair caramel undertone.

Taste - Follows the nose. Orangey citrus flavor with a peppery spice bite from the rye. Firm caramel malt backbone. Hints of chocoolate in the finish, with a lingering pepper and citrus pith aftertaste.

Mouthfeel - Medium to full in body with fair carbonation. Pretty heavy for an IPA, though rye can thicken a brew. Semi-dry finish.

Overall - Pretty delicious, though its drinkable qualities aren't quite on par with some of the top notch IPA's. Avoid after a full meal. (788 characters)
