Notes/Commercial Description:
Originally released as part of our Short Batch Series, our Rhye IPA arose from our desire to play with rye malt. It's built on a Finestkind IPA chassis, with the following changes:

• We tweaked the grain bill adding 30% rye malt and swapped Aromatic malt for C-60. Rye adds a spicy note while Aromatic malt adds a more subtle flavor than C-60 but increases malt aroma.

• We lowered the mash rest temperature a few degrees, giving the final beer less body and more drinkability.

• We jacked up the dry hopping to four times the level of Finest Kind for big hop aroma.

A: Pours a hazy orange colour with a 1/2" head with lacing down the glass.

S: Great citrusy hop aroma with a bit of lingering rye in the background.

T: Hoppy citrus notes of grapefruit and pine dominates with some malt. The finish brings a very nice balance of the spiciness of the rye and the astringency of the hops.

M: Great creamy mouthfeel, medium bodied with some light carbonation. There's a pleasantly bitter, dry feel at the finish.

O: Overall, this is a great variation on rye beer/IPAs. The beer comes of as hoppy, yet still easy to drink. Very nice work to Smutty again! I hope to find this on-tap/next time I go to the store.

Appearance is a cloudy brownish straw color with a full finger of head that retained for some time and left delicate lacing behind. The nose has notes of both hops and rye - exactly as expected. The flavor profile is a tasty balance of hop bitterness and rye spiciness.

In all catagories, this is an exceptional example of the hybrid rye-IPA style.

Bottle I brought to share at the Protest Bottle Share For LA Beer Week held at Red Carpet Wine in Glendale, CA.

Pours a hazy gold with a foamy orange-white head that settles to a small cap on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, citrus fruit, and citrus zest aromas. Taste is much the same with citrus zest and slight rye flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with a nice citrus forward hop presence, but the rye aspect is quite subdued in my opinion.

on tap as a guest beer at Amherst brewing. this pours a greyish shade of light brown, funny looking and cloudy, with only minimal white soapy head. the nose is heavy on the rye, more bready than spicy, but robust nevertheless. also well hopped, dry hopped obviously, with some residual oil and bitterness to boot. the taste is actually lighter on the rye malt than the smell, it just accentuates the other malts. the hops are real aggressive, plentiful, and bitter more than anything else. I get some high alpha varietals, but I also get some more subtle English stuff, it really works. light and delicate for a rye beer, because of the grain. it drinks easy, and the higher alcohol is well disguised. nice in the early fall, smuttynose continues to impress me. rye beer is boom or bust most of the time, and this falls on the right side of that for sure.

A-Bright cloudy orange, one finger head, nicely carbonated.

S-Good deal of citrus hops, orange and lemon, not much grass but some. A little bit of rye spice.

T-Some rye, not much. In the finish there is a bit more. Good deal of citrus hops and nice bitterness in the finish. Balance is good but more rye would greatly improve the beer.

M-Medium bodied, nicely carbonated and some hop resins.

O-The IPA part of the beer was spot on. The Rye part wasn't. More rye to help out the balance and the beer would improve greatly.

A-Pours a cloudy orange color. Big, fluffy white head. Great retention. Lacing is nice as well.

S-Great hop profile. Really stresses pineapple and grapefruit. Rye is not overly intense but it does lend that signature spicy zest. Grassy and piney too.

T-I really enjoy this beer's hoppy flavors. Hops are very ripe and juicy. Definitely getting some pineapple and melony flavors. Peaches too. Big, bready, sweet malty flavors. Then I find the rye to be more noticeable here.

M-Creamy and not as bitter as you'd expect. Especially with this having some relation to the Finest Kind recipe.

O/D-A great beer. I really enjoyed the hop bouquet here. Pretty complex in my view. Love the label too.

From the big bottle series labeled bottle conditioned 2013. Sampled on September 20, 2013.

It pours a very cloudy orange to golden yellow with this long-lasting light, fluffy off-white head. Decent carbonation.

The nose is floral, grapefruit, and orange mainly with a dash of grainy toasted malts balancing and blending it all together.

The body is medium and smooth.

The taste has an full floral and citrus taste but it is not overly bitter. It is moderately bitter and the bitterness ends dry and lingers briefly on the tail end but it is not overly so. A great variation on the rye IPA style.

Found this on the shelf in San Diego yesterday. Score! Really glad to see these guys here. Hopefully we get a lot more from them soon.

A: Pours a slightly hazed amber color with beautiful gold highlights. A nice one finger cream colored head leaves a curtain of lace after each sip.

S: A good amount of tropical and citrusy hops right away. Some spicy rye behind that. Mango, grapefruit and a good amount of caramel. The smell is a bit faint, but I like what I'm getting.

T: Pine under a blanket of caramel and toffee malt flavors. Spicy rye near the middle with a good amount of bready malt. The peppery rye shows up on the finish with some light pine resin. A really solid beer.

22oz bottle poured into a pint glass. Pours a hazy golden with a huge fluffy eggshell white head. The chunky head sticks around and leaves amazing lacing. The head and lacing alone make the appearance nearly perfect. You can always count on Smuttynose's beers looking awesome. The aromas have very subtle hints of pine and citrus. There's some orange zest in the mix. There's also a bit of breadiness and some caramel malts in the background as well. They're fine, but don't exactly wake up your senses. The flavors have a solid bitterness to them. Lots of grapefruit. There are hints of pine needles and grass. Very earthy. The rye is there, giving this one a decent spiciness. A little bit of black pepper. Flavors are sharp and crisp. Finishes dry. Alcohol goes unnoticed. Mouthfeel is wonderful. It has active carbonation, but remains very creamy and fluffy. It's drinks very smoothly.

This is a solid Rye IPA. Fans of Finestkind will like this one. The aromas and flavors are decent, but the craftsmanship is what really sells this beer for me.

Pours a hazy, deep golden orange color with tangerine edges and a half finger off-white head that slowly settles into a thin, lasting ring. Decent retention with sporadic spots of soapy lacing left behind.

Sweet and earthy aroma with grassy hops, spicy rye and a strong malt character. Lots of caramel sweet along with some bread, toffee and roasted nut. Slight floral hop presence with a bit of resinous pine but the malt profile and rye take away from the hops in the nose.

On the fuller end of medium bodied with a crisp hop bite up front that lingers over the spice and sweet malt backbone into a slightly dry finish. The rye is very prominent with a nice spicy, zesty flavor that nicely compliments the dry, earthy bitterness of the hops. Hop profile is a bit one dimensional but still has nice flavor. The malt backbone is huge, much stronger than I prefer. Lots of caramel, biscuit and toffee. Good for balance and blends well with the rye but it takes away from the hop flavor a bit too much for my preference. Still, this beer is very dry and bitter with spicy, grassy hops and dank pine needle character. Overall a decent tasting beer but I don't think I would seek it out again.

From 09/12/13 notes. On tap at Rattle n Hum. 12 oz. pour in a tulip.

a - Pours a murky medium burnt orange color with one finger of fluffy off white head and low carbonation evident.

s - Smells of rye, citrus hops, oranges, pine hops, lemons, grapefruits, and earthy notes. Some spice as well. Rye is up front, but lots of citrus still.

t - Tastes fo citrus hops, oranges, pine hops, rye, spice, yeast, bread, earthy notes, and grapefruit. Less rye in the taste and more pine and hops in general. Better in my opinion.

m - Medium body and low to moderate carbonation. Not much of a bitter kick at all.

o - Overall a decent DIPA; some nice citrus hops throughout and definite rye in the nose. Worth checking out.
