Saw this at the COOP at a decent price point, and because I happen to enjoy Dopplebocks I thought I would give it a try. The beer poured relatively flat, with not a great deal of carbination- but that seems nornal for the style- especially in an aged beer. I was able to coax a half inch of tan foam. light lacing. I liked the taste. Banana balanced with cocoa, and a little tobacco from the smell. This beer was very mellow and did not have much of a bite at all- in a good way. At times I like to lay off the hops, and this beer was a malt explosion with very light hops. I split a 16.9 oz bottle with my wife, so the beer did not have much time to warm before I drank it down. I liked this better than a few other Dopplebocks I had recently. Color me impressed despie the initial pour.

Commercial Description:

"Se-cal-le, Latin for rye, is a German style double bock brewed with this all too underappreciate grain, then lagered in High West Rye Whiskey barrels for 6 months. This unique brew, developed by Red Rock head brewer Kevin Templin and High West distiller Brendan Coyle is the first collaboration between the two since working together at Red Rock in 2006. Double bocks are a stronger version of traditional bock that was first brewed in Munich by the Paulaner monks, an order founded by St. Francis of Paula. Historically, doppelbock was high in alcohol and sweet, thus serving as "liquid bread" for the monks during times of fasting, when solid food was not permitted. The aroma is intensely malty with some toasty notes, and the flavour is very rich with noticeable alcoholic strength and very little hops. Finishing in Rye Whiskey barrels leads to a slight spiciness with hints of clove and dry oak. 8.5% alcohol by volume Please break bread responsibly."

Picked up tonight at the COOP for about $6 if memory serves... 500 ml bottle.

Pours with a small short lasting tannish head... the brew is clear dark chestnut...

The nose delivers... clean bready maltiness... dry toast.. and plenty of whiskey and some minor vanilla notes let you know this has spent some time in barrels...

The flavor has the same character as the nose, but the vanilla almost makes me think of a creamy caramel essence when combined with the big malt profile.. finishes surprisingly dry with a lingering toast and whiskey/vanilla note that lingers for a while.

Body is a touch higher than medium... smooth and coating mouthfeel is accentuated by a light carbonation.

This a damn well made doppelbock... I love a good dark lager, and this one is excellent. I had my doubts about the barrel aging, but it works quite well.

2012 Bottle

- Pours a deep burgundy with low carbonation.

- Smells is malt and oak with a little vinegar tartness.

- Nice maltiness to start with surprising vinegar tart notes. Also picking up some of the rye oak flavors from the barrels on the finish. Beer is subtle but complex, with the mouthfeel of a wine almost.

- Overall a strange beer. I felt like it would be a lot sweeter, but the tart flavor was a pleasant surprise. A local bottle shop recommended this and mentioned it was sour, but he wasn't sure if it was meant to be. Maybe some bacteria was picked up from the barrel aging, but it seems to work. Worth a try if you're feeling like something different.

Hands down one of the oddest beers I have ever had. It's sour! It's not terrible but it's not good. Definitely not a dopplebock. I don't care what the label says. Good mouth feel, odd color. A friend gave me a case. Finished all of them. It's almost like a beer/wine combo. This is a beer You sip slowly over time because your taste buds need to recuperate after each sip. It's 8.5% and that's the only thing that kept me drinking it. Enjoyable but not recommended.

500 ml bottle from the 2012 bottling poured into my CCB snifter after about thirty minutes outside of the fridge. Bottle has no dating. :(

Appearance: A sandy one fingered heads sits atop a clear amber brown beer. A little streaking that I can't quite call lacing.

Smell: A malty beer is what I smell. I also get a touch of booze, vanilla, rye, and barrel. Little to no hops.

Taste: This is pretty interesting. I get a touch of sour twang, I do not think that was intended, but then again maybe this is the rye spiciness. That twang seems to fade with the beer warming a bit. I find this beer to be very malt forward with some residual sweetness and fruitiness to go along with the vanilla, whiskey, and barrel tastes that kick in toward the end.

Mouthfeel: A pretty thick and slick body to go with carbonation make a fine feeling beer.

Overall: I love 500 ml bottles, bigger than 12 but no daunting as a bomber. More 500 ml bottle Utah brewers, please!!! To fill this bottle they used a very interesting beer. I enjoyed this one a lot, please put this one in the DABC stores, please.

Poured into a Squatters true pint glass a nice dark brown color, some carbonation, very small light tan head, with not much sticky lacing left behind. The nose is malty, slight rye note, slight banannas, toffee, chocolate. The taste is pretty nice, malty, very slight bannana note, picking up the rye more on the taste, lots of toffee, with some chocolate thrown in. Medium body, ABV is alittle up front, but does not distract from the taste/finish. Overall a pretty tasty brew, but the price is outrageous.

A: Pours a dark brown with a good sized and dense very light beige head. Fades slowly, top notch head retention and a big island of foam that refuses to dissipate. An unbroken and perfect wall of lacing is left behind finally. Don't think I've ever seen such a solid wall of lacing on a beer before to be honest.

S: A lot of rye but not as sharp as I was expecting from a rye-barrel aged rye-malted doppelbock. A bit of toasted bread to boot.

T: Rye whiskey up front. Lots of it with a decent bit of oak and...banana? Has a tart dark fruitiness to it too with a touch of leather. Quite sour once the beer warms. Almost too much but it fades away to a strong toasted rye bread malt. Spicy rye stands alone in the finish. Long lingering oily rye presence in the aftertaste.

M: Medium bodied, smooth.

O: Definitely a beer for rye lovers. Malty and smooth; drinkable for sure. Brief bit of tart/sour fruit after the rye whiskey makes me wonder if it's not infected however. Hard to say, if it is it's still fresh enough to enjoy...for now. I think this beer had potential to be even better if it weren't for that off flavor. Alas!

About a third of the 500ml bottle poured into my CBS snifter...

A: Clear darker brown...transparent pour leaves a small half finger of pretty consistent creamy tight head leaves some nice lacing...

S: Initially very bready and bock/doppelbock-like...the more it warms the more a clear layer of vanilla emerges...faint oak as well, with big bread crust and constant light sweetness.

T: Follows the nose, upfront there is a big bready/malty body with a faint suggestion of rye toast spicyness...woody barrel notes begin to mix with the sweetness, and oak and vanilla are detectable...caramel too...faint hint of alcohol.

MF: Body is a bit higher than medium and coats the mouth well.

O: The flavors and nose are good but they don't blow me away - still, its a doppelbock, and I didn't expect it to do that. Still a very good Rye BA offering for a lager IMO.
