This really isn't a Belgian IPA, and doesn't claim to be, but that's the nearest jumping off point here on BA. This would otherwise squarely fit in the "experimental" category. Also, this needs to warm up to at least 50 degrees for full effect..straight out of the fridge doesn't work as well.

It pours ominously dark for a cross examination of three types of pale ales, a barely translucent deep mahogany trimmed with a trim and sticky beige foam.
The nose is broad and seems to bring a kaleidoscopic array of aromas with each sniff. Pineapple, plantain, rusted tin, black tea, lime leaves, almonds, mushrooms, aged sugar cane rum, liquorice, crystallized ginger... It's more obtuse than acute, and specific flavors are blurred, but it smells delicious. And it does smell strong, but that's not a turn off here.
Into the mouth, there a swelling rock candy sweetness that ebbs fruitier towards clementines, star fruit, underipe bananas, and kiwi. It transitions towards grain, but meanders first through something that seems barrel aged (though it absolutely is not, and thus is a thousand times more impressive), with it distinct notions of vanilla, toasted coconut, burnt caramel, and hazelnuts...and booze itself, and I'll get back to this in a bit. Grain takes over with doughy and nutty and spicy qualities that moderate the middle sections, and the booze starts to flare, giving it a rye whiskey lean. Likemind hops hit with spearmint, evergreen sap, lime juice, metallics, and dried herbs. The continuing lime and mint hop traits mingle with a transformed and forward rum-like booziness to create a lasting Mojito impression. It's 8.5% is worn up front, and is entirely integral to the taste.
It's medium-full build with small-beaded steady carbonation makes this drinkable despite the insistence of its ABV. It coats the mouth, then begs to be coated anew. Make no mistake, the strength is tasted. But like a great liquor, when it tastes this good, it only matters in how much trouble you'll get into.
As experiments go, this is a Platinum medal. All my preconceived notions were way off. I've never had anything like it, and I love it. This isn't a Belgian IPA, it's not Farmhouse anything, it's not even what they call it "a mash up of English American,and Belgian Pales".
It is what it is.
Perhaps "Ridiculously Fucking Innovative" and "a Motherfucking Revelation" could not be approved for the label, so they had to tag it somewhat lamer.
But as such, it succeeds tremendously and is an absolute must try for everyone that can find it (even at about $11-$12 a sixer). And don't let sticker shock balk you, buy all you can find.
With all this discovery, I'm not even sure how to rate it, and my initial numbers calculated out to a 4.85. That seemed high at first, now the present 4.55 seems embarrassingly conservative. This could be the jewel in any brewery's crown.
Whatever the math works out to, it is fantastic, and certainly cements Furthermore as a brewery to watch for (and buy from) amongst its better known regional peers.

Update 5/26/08:
5 months have seen the hops wither some and more familiar fruits (yellow apples and pears and figs) take control. It has moved past most of the raw rogueness that made me love it so much and melded into something akin to a well-hopped Dubbel. For those that thought the alcohol was a bit rough, it has begun to smooth out and will enjoy it more now.
But I was stricken with its brashness and I feel like it's losing its edge.
Still, though, it's very good, and I'm only nitpicking.

Update 11/24/08:
Trying one of this year's batch alongside one that's been aged a year. The fresh stuff is phenomenal and affirms my initial thoughts and ratings...the older stuff just good-ish at this point, and something like a dubbel / old ale cross...but without some of the depth that that description might hint at.
The hops seem to die quickly here, and they truly make this beer.
Don't bother aging any and get it as fresh as you can. It's a mindfuck then...and only then.

This is a great tasting and smelling beer.

The aroma is rich, and malty....brown sugar glazed bananas....caramel....and some other sweet fruitiness (blackberry ice cream, pears, and sweet apples)...great aroma...

The taste is similar but toss in some pistachios for an added nutty note....caramel is big again as is the sweeter fruit notes..

Body is big...call it full....has almost a slightly acidic yeasty fade on the finish....barely noticeable but fits in nicely..

Hell of a beer...great experiment of 18 different pale ale styles or some shit like that...whatever the case this is a winner...great beer....I would love to drink more of this one...

Pours a hazy dark amber. Small beige head is quick in it's retreat. Ruby highlights. Looks, and pours quite heavy.

Aroma is mostly yeast, the Belgian third of the brew. A bit of bready malt sweetness as well. I'm picking up a bit of citrus hop aroma as well.

Citrus hops mingle with fruity Belgium yeast flavors wonderfully! This is a new style to me, and a I've picked a very good ambassador in Make Weight. Malt is present, however restrained, and a bit bready, with some good sweetness to balance out the bitter hops, and tart fruit yeast. This is a tasty brew, and the flavor makes good on the aroma's promise.

Mouthfeel is thick and heavy, but somehow, doesn't seem out of place. Low carbonation, maybe too low, is the only thing stopping this from being a 5 category.

Overall, this is a fantastic beer. No alcohol comes through, and delicious, and sessionable to a certain degree. As soon as I'm done reviewing this, I'll be having mine with some homemade gumbo, which I made with homemade chicken stock, chicken, andouille sausage, and shrimp. I'm hoping they will go together well.

Poured this beauty into a chalice.

A- Dark red, cloudy. Nice head that dissolved into a thin rim all the way through.

S- A lot of aroma going on, wheat, vanilla and what I think is a earthy yeast.

It tastes extraordinary, Sweet at first finishes dry, Spiced like a belgian
I like it in my mouth and I would like it too stay in my mouth for all time. I could drink this one all night, and not regret it.

Thanks to autumnaldave for this amazing extra! He recommended drinking it first as it has a good kick to it, and I'd have to agree with him.

Pours a nice copper color with a decent size, creamy looking head.

Smell is predominately hoppy, large amount of citrus, with a surprisingly strong sugary malt backing. Very well balanced aroma. There are hints of alcohol though, but faint.

Wow, the alcohol is fairly evident, I get a good warming sensation in my mouth and belly, but it doesn't distract from the taste at all. As hoppy as the aroma was, it doesn't translate to the taste as much, instead we get a very sweet tasting beer. Lots going on, malt, caramel, other spices mixed in but not overwhelming.

My first Furthermore ale, if their other beers are as delicious as this one, I've certainly been made a fan.

Into my Sam Adams glass, nice 1+inch head, off white, clear light brown look.

Spicy yeast like belgian combined with orange/lemon hops, very nice. Fresh smell as well.

All kinds of malty hoppy goodness here. Most of all it combines well, very tasty. Bready malt, deep across the palate, with a slightly dry finish telling you to drink more. This is a keeper. Big flavor is no surprise from these guys, and given the abv I expected a good beer. Combination of English, American, and Belgian pales, maltier than some hop heads would like, but fits my style well.

Bold body, well rounded. Nice drinker as well, keep em coming Furthermore.

Pours a hazy dark amber, darker than I was expecting. A blend of three beers apparantly, the yeast interaction perhaps making it a few shades darker? Nevertheless, a nice looking beer. Fruity in the nose, some floral hops and belgian yeast fruityness. The flavor of this beer caught me off guard. Lots of belgian flavor, candied date and fig right off the back, dark fruits and light earthy hop bitterness. Pretty damn tasty. Medium bodied feel, smooth and creamy. Overall a very impressive beer from Furthermore.

Pours a nice amber color with a tan head that leaves behind some very generous lacing and had a lasting cap. Aroma is loaded with American hops, English caramel malts, and Belgian yeast. Very nice, but I was expecting more hop aroma. It's mostly sweet and fruity smelling. Taste is very good! Plenty of caramel malts are in play, some notes of apple and other ripe fruits, and then a nice biting bitterness on the finish. It's sweet, but not cloyingly so and it's very well balanced between the hops and malt. Medium body, low carbonation. I'm thinking this is an older bottle and the hops have faded a bit, but it's still delicious, nonetheless. I can't believe this actually clocks in at 8.5% because the alcohol is completely hidden and drinks like a sessionable pale ale rather than high ABV IPA. Very good, definitely Furthermore's best!

Hazy scarlet red. Thin beige head. Bubbly collar. Stringy and sticky lace. Aroma is a mix of belgian like candy sweetness with some citric and piney hoppiness. It's a good aroma. Flavor smacks you in the face with bold flavors of Belgian yeast spice and esters and piney hops and slight alcohol. Malt base is that of warm biscuity bread tones. This is a great tasting beer. Probably my favorite from Furthermore so far. Full bodied and lightly carbonated. Alcohol is present, but not significantly so.

Poured into a regular pint glass. Whoops. Still, I can tell that it would look mighty fine in a chalice. Looks mighty fine in a glass, actually. Deep, dark haziness with a head that's like heat vision.

Smells of rich, intense beligan malt. I know there are other malts in there but they just ain't coming through. (Or wait, they do. When it gets a little warm you really pick up the British Pale malts, and then when it gets a little warmer still you pick up the American ones. They blend together wonderfully.) The yeast is lightly alcoholic and spicy and the hops.

Okay, the website says this is a Flanders yeast that should be the main attraction right here but I'm picking up none of that. Tastes a lot like the Chimay strain, believe it or not. The hops are fairly big and very British, but the real star of the show is the divine combination of malt profiles. Those APA nodes that I picked up in the nose were just imagined, I think, because all I'm getting is a mind bogglingly complicated-yet-mellow balance of a BPA and an EPA. West coast American hops finish things off, along with a good dose of that sugary Belgian aftertaste that a lot of American brewers take too far but Furthermore has gotten just right.

Wowzers.

From the Brewery: Our triple pale is a bastardization of three regionally distinctive recipes that were stacked in unequal measure in order to make a beefy beer which highlights each recipe's finer points: Esters from a dominant Flanders yeast are reigned-in by cleaner American and London strains; Kent Golding hops provide mild bitterness, giving English and Belgian specialty malts room to breath; Oregonian hops offer a fragrant nose; Belgian candy sugar boosts the strength of this mash-up to 8.5% ABV.

A triple pale ale??? Ok.

Furthermore is known for unclassifiable brews like the peppered pale ale Knot Stock and its Irish dry rauch stout Three-Feet Deep but this brew takes the cake when it comes to difficult to place within a set style parameter.

Appearance: Medium brown body with amber or perhaps mahogony highlights and a healthy beige foam. Not a common color for beer, especially an ale such as this.

Aroma: Damned complicated and kind of playful. As the beer warms dramatically different things start to happen. Each sniff brings new notes of interest. Let's begin with black tea since that is what I first noticed and that is the aroma stays most consistent over the course of the beer's short life in my glass. As the beer warms tobacco notes come out but before that come a slew of hop and yeast inspired fruits, herbs and spices: pineapple, ginger, rum, passion fruit, kiwi, and some raw iron for good measure.

Flavor: Like a bitter cup of tea cut with sugar and lemon or a lime wedge drizzled in simple syrup and topped with a mint leaf, or maybe crushed tobacco and a shot of rye. Complex and as changing with the temperature as the aroma.

Mouthfeel: A steady astringent tea leafy-herbal hopped quality lasts throughout. Full bodied. Notably boozy at times. Highly effervescent.

Drinkability: High. This beer changes so much from start to finish that by the time you down your last ounce you are ready to start all over again.

A hard beer to define, an easy beer to drink.

Picked up a six at Riley's here in Madison for $11.99. Always a pleasure to see a new one from Furthermore, who have put together a pretty impressive line-up in its short time on the market.

Described as "A single-batch conflagration of English-, American-, and Belgian-Style Pales".

Pour: dark amber-mahogany, nearly opaque under a finger of khaki foam that fades to a spotty coating and ring.

Nose: fragrant and floral hops, sweet, sugary, passion fruit esters, light musty yeast and whiff of alcoholic vapor.

Taste: herbal/metallic English hops, citrusy American varieties, syrupy sweet candy sugar, spicy Belgian yeast and a hearty alcohol burn.

Feel: viscous with a biting effervescence typical of many American-Belgians.

Drinkability/Overall: a cool concept from an innovative local brewery. Brash and rough around the edges, there's a lot going on here and I like most of it. Truly blurs the boundaries of style in a way we will be seeing more and more in the future of American craft beer.

beer pours a beautiful amber with a thin tan head that lingered and left lots of lacing.

this beer smells pretty complex. dark fruits and booze. hard to finger it all, but lots going on.

the tasete is delightfully sharp. a bit sweet and spicy.

beer is a blast in the mouth. needles of tartness prickle tht toungue.

drinks easy for 8.5%. didn't realize it was that strong. fantastic beer that's easy to drink despite the booziness.

Clear and crimson, slim off-white head.

Bright, fruity, hoppy aroma. A cornucopia inside, citrus, apple, melon, tropical fruits. Lovely.

In the taste, the hops are high again, but matched well with sweet caramel malt. Almost too sweet, I could go for more hop taste.

"An ecumenical mash-up." Hmmm. "A single-batchconflagration of English-, American-, and Belgian style pales." Okay, I get it now. Belgian yeast, English malt, American hops. Or the other way around.

Tasty stuff. Excellent blending. I could go for a few of these! Nice work, furthermore!

Pours a medium amber with a slight cloud and a thin head that recedes quickly to a cap (glass).

Aroma is of sweet candy sugar. Cotton candy and candied hops. Really does smell like they took some hops and candy coated them.

Taste up front is sweet candy sugar and roasted grain, then the hops come in. Hops are strong but not overpowering. Small amount of banana and clove that hint at weiss yeast. The grain is strong enough to keep up with the hops. Almost perfect balance. The best things about a Belgian and a DIPA all in one.

Nice thick mouthfeel with a good livey carbonation to keep up.

Balance is the trump card here. Balance on flavor and mouthfeel.

Excellent offering.

This one pours a dark very clean copper and has a medium off white head. Aroma is sweet hops and malts, light spice. The flavor has a wonderful spiciness to it. Mildly bitter hops, peat, and sweet malts. Also hints of pepper. Lots going on with this beer. As it warms now I am getting a bananna aroma. Mouthfeel is mildly silky. Overall I am quit impressed with this one.

Dullish copper color with nary a head of slimming ivory hued foam slipping off the top as soon as it arrives but sustains a nice dusty skim. Ghostly lacing coats the glass with a few scattered stringy things.

Aroma is bold and heavy of some rum soaked cookie sugars coated with slushy banana, partial old pineapple, dull green tea, and a pile of darker tropical fruit skins.

Taste is much like a Belgian Pale with more malt happened on the back end with that specific tang of yeast that conjures up soggy breads and caramel which is backed with tropical senses of pineapple, banana, mango, some citrusy tinting, and those baked lemon square things. It's quite complexing really, lots of thick malt slathers things up with bready cooked sugary things while laced with nice tropical fruityness. Its no Chouffe Houblon Dobbelen, but its pretty damn solid.

Body is quite malty and heavy with a nice twist of twangy yeast and bready snap laced with slight tropical, citrusy fruityness. Softens and soakens the palate with saturating chewyness and coats the palate like a sponge full of malt extract.

Drinks down quite easy given its hefty, malt laden girth. Very solid stuff and cheap too.

Pours a caramel redish brown hue just short of ruby with a fluffy khaki head. Smells just lovely. Biscuit and toffee, apples and tropical fruit. Perhaps tea of some sort? Taking a sip I'm getting a caramel apple sweetened with candi sugar. Some softly bittering hops kicking in with very little citrus flavoring contribution, contrary to the nose. Green apple holds court at the back of the tongue. Sweet, crisp and dry, not overly so on any count. Letting this warm a touch to see what other flavors emerge: It grows a bit creamier, revealing some nutty notes, a touch more peppery spice and maybe lime in lieu of the pineapple I was smelling. The alcohol becomes a bit more evident on the back end as well, though not in an obtrusive way, lending some whiskey-like qualities before being overtaken with bubble gum and orange zest. I should revise that as it sounds gross, but hey, thats what I'm tasting and I kinda like it. Warmer, the mouthfeel begins to resemble a tripel more than anything to me. Just a touch too sweet overall - a bit of a hit to the drinkability tally, but its such a joy to taste the evolution of this beer I can't take too much off.

Seems like the Belgian pale is winning out in the end in this three-way battle, but even as it emerges victorious, the grainy malt of the American pale seems to want to drag it back into the ring. A wild ride of a complex beer. Really hard to peg just what this should be classified as. Several characteristics do point to Belgian IPA, but award points to Furthermore for stylebusting. Creative effort, and a great introduction to a brewery I'll be seeking out more from. Thanks to autumnaldave for this highly karmic extra. Very tasty unclassifiable brew.

12oz bottle served in a pilsner glass.

L - hazed amber color with a small beige head that left some bits of lacing. carbonation bubbles were constant.

S - sweet, yeasty smell, some apple/pear aroma as well.

T - sweet and somewhat fruity taste upfront with a light bittering mixed in finishing sweet and dry.

F - medium bodied with good carbonation.

D - goes down too easy for 8.5% abv.

Amber color with reddish/golden highlights, hazy with a thin white head. Plenty of sticky lacing. Nose is quite inviting, citric, piney hops, with sweet, sugary malts. I can smell some fruity Belgian yeast. Delish.

Some citrusy hops: oranges, tangerines with a hint of pine resin. The English/Belgian malts work well, candied sugar and spices (clove?) are present without dominating the smooth caramel backbone. Not too sweet, thankfully.

Relatively light to medium bodied, easy drinking despite higher abv. A truly interesting and satisfying mash-up of a beer. Somewhat like jazz riffs, varying on a theme. The American, English, and Belgian riffs all get their time, without dominating the beer. Furthermore sure knows how to invent some note-worthy beers.

"A SINGLE BATCH CONFLAGRATION OF ENGLISH-, AMERICAN- AND BELGIAN-STYLE PALE ALES".

It's an interesting concept, but how well do the styles all work out in the mix?

The Belgian component is the most obvious, being yeast, and its clove character is quite obvious in the nose. Its phenols carry through into the flavor as well, and there's a bit of 'burnt-plastic' and spiciness to it as well.

The English component, to me, is the second most obvious. The body is a hazy deep amber with golden highlights beneath a creamy head of off-white that leaves short but solid walls of lace around the glass. Clearly there's a little bit of caramel malt in there, which would make it more English than American - but not necessarily more Belgian than American. Regardless of how you resolve (or not resolve) that, the malt's a bit caramelish and bready. But I also find what I'd consider to be English hops in here... floral, slightly leafy, and a touch grassy - and even a bit slightly mettalic or mineralish. I'm thinking East Kent Goldings and Fuggles.

What about the American side? I'm guessing there are some American hops to it, but I think they're over-ridden by the Belgian yeast. I did find some fruitiness (fresh cut red delicious apple, pear, cherry, red berry, and perhaps a hint of pineapple and citrus), and that could be coming from some Amarillo or another hop (...or from the Belgian yeast... ?), but I don't clearly find them. So, noting that the yeast component is clearly not American, and the malt component is clearly not American, and the hops don't appear to be distinctly American - I think the U.S. has been short-changed! Even the bitterness level seems a touch low to be American.

But let's go back to the malt. It's English in nature, but there's far more going on than that. It's too heavy to be English pale - perhaps an old ale or a barleywine, but not a pale ale. And it's too sugary as well. That leaves us with just some English hops in an otherwise Belgian-style pale ale. But even that doesn't seem to fit. It's just too big and malty. The name is appropriate (Makeweight), because it's a weighty beer.

So what is it? Ahhh, it's Belgian, who cares? Belgians don't really categorize their beers like we do (or at least they didn't until recently). "Belgian IPA" works for me. But what about the beer? Despite its kind of odd-ball premise of throwing together three different recipes, it somehow works. It's rich and spicy, and sweet and phenolic, and hoppy and mineralish. The alcohol is present, but it never really steps forward. There's enough bitterness to balance it, and it finishes dry with some residual yeast spiciness and dull phenols.

Overall, it's worthy endeavor.
