The beer pours a dark golden/amber color with a thick frothy off-white head that slowly fades to lacing. The aroma is good. It has an excellent dry, roasted, coffee scent. It's earthy with little malt character. The taste is good as well. It has a light pale malt flavor with the addition of coffee. It's dry and roasted without the black and chocolate malt taste. What a concept. The mouthfeel is fine. It is a medium bodied beer with adequate carbonation. This is a damn smooth coffee beer. I love the use of coffee without all the black malts.

Thanks to morimech!

Pours hazed orangeish amber with hues towards light brown. The off-white head recedes to virtually disappearing as it progresses, leaving minimal lacing.

The smell is of caramel, floral notes and roasted (slightly "burnt") coffee.

The taste is of caramel, floral notes and coffee that balance each other and blend well, with caramel maltiness staying ahead through the finish.

It has a malty smoothness with a medium body and medium, even carbonation.

Another interesting brew from Furthermore. Who would have thought of coffee in a Cali. Common/Steam beer? Glad that these folks did! A solid choice for a coffee brew outside of the usual porter or stout style.

Pours a nice clean/clear golden brown color, nice carbonation, nice little creamy off-white head, with some nice sticky lacing left behind. The nose is malty, with a very nice touch of coffee, caramel. The taste is slightly sweet, malty, with some coffee notes. Medium body. Drinkable, this is a pretty tasty brew.

Acquired from pochman, courtesy of BA Secret Santa 2009 so a big "Thank You" goes out to him. Poured from a 12oz bottle into a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a light brown color, with a short off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick on the glass.

S: The aroma is of caramelized malts, coffee, some fruit and some hops.

T: The taste starts out very creamy with a coffee flavor that is clearly the strongest flavor in the beer but doesn't completely dominate. There are background flavors of fruit and caramel. The hops presence is mild but complementary. The after-taste is slightly sweet.

M: Crisp and smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is clean.

D: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, mild kick, different representation of style, this is one is a little lighter than your average coffee-flavored beer and is a good one to drink for a long time.

A - Tiny particles float in the brilliantly clear amber brown color. Much lighter than I expected for a coffee beer. The pour is quiet leaving a surprising two-finger head. Good retention resulted in an eventually clumpy pile and thick lace on the glass.

S - Coffee galore. Smells like french roast with a dry and bitter finish. Toasted malts behind lend little towards the aroma. A fairly caramel hint.

T - A crisp hop feel and floral flavor appears for milliseconds before washing away to a lightly toasted caramel malt and bold roasted coffee finish.

M - Very creamy and smooth with a mild carbonation finish. It ends particularly hard with a moderate dry and lightly roasted bitter balance.

D - Interestingly light for a coffee beer, it still packs the real coffee flavor punch to it. Pretty well balanced and medium-bodied giving it a rather easy drinkability.

Picked this up on a recent trip to Wisconsin. Served in a Half-Acre pint glass.

A - Pours with a finger and a half of light tan foam that dissipates to a thin cap with nice solid lacing. Nice transparent mahogany body with some bubbles and suspended solids. Not your typical steam beer for sure.

S - Fairly potent coffee, but also some light lager twang, spicy floral hops, and caramel malts. It's definitely different from the coffee porters & stouts that are so prolific these days, but still quite nice.

T - The taste is fairly similar, with a mixture of roast coffee, apple and berry fruitiness, and light caramel and chocolate malt. Not much of an obvious hop presence - maybe a touch of citrus in the periphery.

M - This is a little too thin and carbonated for my liking. Kind of watery, with a fairly sticky finish. Probably my least favorite thing about this brew.

D - The coffee isn't palate ravaging, and other than the over-carbonation this is quite easy to drink. If I were looking for an alcoholic substitute for iced coffee this would be up my alley.

Quite interesting to see a coffee-infused beer that isn't already malt-heavy (porter/stout/doppelbock, etc.). This experiment is actually reasonable successful. Nice to see brewers playing around with lagers.

Poured into my pint glass the beer is a rather clear rusty redish brown. Two fingers of light mocha colored head settle slowly, leaving a full lace ring around the rim.

The aroma is pure roast coffee. Light hints of sweet malt surrounded by medium roast coffee. It seems really strange to get this much coffee aroma out of a beer with this light of a color. If you blind folded me and gave me a whiff I would most definitley say this was a stout.

The flavor is very earthy. Coffee grounds mixed with black dirt. Subtle sugar sweetness along with mild hoppiness. It's very unique for sure.

Medium to light body with above average carbonation.

Overall one the most unique beers I've ever tasted. Certainly not my favorite but a worthy well crafted brew.

Another beer thanks to maximum12 from secret santa 09. I thought this was a coffee stout or porter from reading the label, very surprised to see a ruby/amber beer come out of the bottle and into my Portsmouth tulip. There is a soap white two finger frothy head atop the beer that leaves a generous amount of sticky lacing.

The smell is very inviting, a huge hit of fresh coffee, but a light nutty coffee for sure. The coffee is followed up by some graham cracker sweetness, some fresh cut grass sharp wheat characters.

The taste mirrors the smell pretty closely, but the flavors aren't as strong as the scents in this beer. The blend of citrus wheat and coffee seem to battle each other for supremacy, and neither really wins. There is also a slight metallic bite at the end of the flavor that is a little out of place.

The beer is light bodied, crisp and full flavored with a nice dry finish, making for a nice mouthfeel. The strange metallic flavor in the finish kind of lingers and makes the drinkability suffer.

First beer of 2010! A 12 oz. bottle poured to a pint glass, switching back and forth between the Outback Bowl (Northwestern v. Auburn) and the NHL Winter Classic (Philly v. Boston @ Fenway Park!). I asked for 'obscure' local beers from alctradamus in a recent trade; what do I get but 'Oscura'? Well played, Adam, well played...

Well-designed label: bold red text on a black & white close-up of a French Press filter. Below: "A Nicaraguan All-Female Growers Co-Op (Stop) A Lusciously Aromatic Just Coffee Roast (Stop) Our Warm-Fermented, Cold-Lagered Cerveza Oscura (Huh?)".

A: No indication on the label, but expected 'coffee stout' or similar; what a surprise to have copper-auburn flow from the bottle. Mostly clear with a few carbonation but lots of suspended sediment, unsure if that's 'normal' or due to age. Stubby head, not even 1/2 finger of ivory-ish cream. A few lace specks. Meh.

S: Interesting aroma, robust coffee roast with an acerbic lemon-y backing (maybe the two are related?). Grainy toasting fights though a spiced wheat and a little 'graham cracker' sweetness.

T: Similar 'coffee-ness' as in the aroma, maybe made a bit more complex with zesty spice and an herbal/mint green-ness. Those beans add a firm, almost mineral, bitterness that backs each sip and lasts a while. Dryness even mimics 'black pepper'...curious flavors intertwined, but balance achieved and interest maintained throughout.

M: Fairly brash mouthfeel, crisp and hard-biting. Not much carbonation, but a nice tingle regardless. Medium body, 'fairly refreshing', chalk-dry finish.

D: Quite a curious brew - flavor grew on me after a few sips and some warming. Common/'steam' beers aren't in the normal rotation for me and one with coffee added is certainly a first...recommended for a try if you find one. Wouldn't mind having another - thanks again, Adam!

I have consumed several of these of the summer months and oddly enough just in the bottle, so when I poured this beer it was a bit of a surprise...

A: This beer pours a medium copper color, not at all what I was expecting. The head was initially 1.5 cm and fades to a nice layer of silky foam with a small concentration revolving in the middle of that. The lacing is there but rather effervescent. For a steam beer it seems somewhat impressive.

S: The smell reminds me of a long-term care facility which is good and well a bit of a negative thing. The beer's initial nose is of coarse coffee grounds, the more I whiffed the less the coffee seemed to dominate and a slight citrus/grain came through.

T: The beer doesn't taste as good as it smells, the coffee adds to the beer nicely but a strange style to add it to at the same time. Up front comes the sweetness from whatever malts are being used, midway comes the ever ever ever so slightess of fruitiness, and the finish is bitter coffee with a slight metallic twang.

M: Light and a little too sharp on the tongue.

D: This is a strange beer, but I can attest to drinking it chilled on a summer day and enjoying it. Drinking it is pretty effortless, but maybe I am too much of a coffee lover.

Yet another brewery that has made it's way to PA, good for you guys, good choice.

Oscura has a dark copper look and a loose off white cap that faded into the darkness. Looks like a simple beer and not as dark as I was expecting for being brewed with some fair trade coffee. The smell consists of some sweet malt with a light coffee backing and grain. The taste is the same, exactly. There is a nice amount of coffee in here, but it's rather quite subdued. For being a steam beer, I think the coffee is at the right spot as any more would have been to much. A simple style with a simple amount of coffee. Light to medium bodied with carb hitting the tounge, this one is not dead. Oscura did not wow me, so i wont be going back for it, well maybe if it's on tap I will.

This beer smells exactly like my morning coffee, brewed with fair trade coffee so I think this qualifies as me being a good person. Didn't expect it to be a light brownish amber after smelling it. The head was the faintest brown and faded quick. Aroma was outstanding and full of coffee and dry cocoa. Very malty smell and a slight sweetness. Taste fell short for me, the lager taste shows up out of nowhere. A bit surprising and offputting, don't get me wrong...it is a tasty brew, just unexpected. Mouthfeel is standard lager, thin and crisp. Very drinkable and very tasty, could sit around and watch football with some of this.

12 ounce bottle into a pint glass

A - Pours a clear reddish brown body that has a finger thick head. The head is off white and frothy in appearance. Carbonation racing to the head is visible throughout this beer. Good head retention, minutes after the beer still has a nice lace.

S - The beer is rather intoxicating in smell. Strong blast of roasted coffee notes hit your nose initially. A deeper whiff brings along some creamy caramel and toffee notes. Very good smelling beer.

T - Strong coffee notes as expected. In addition to that there is a nice blast of creamy caramel and toffee that follows the coffee.

M - Medium bodied with a perfect amount of carbonation. Entering the mouth the beer has some strong coffee notes which are not as bitter or dry as I was expecting. The carbonation does a nice job of cleansing the palate for the caramel, cream and toffee. However, the finish of this beer is a bit dry and bitter which prevents this from being any higher.

D - An interesting beer that would need to be chosen during cold months of the year without a doubt. I can't imagine having a coffee type brew in the summer, but during the winter it is solid. I would however, avoid having more than one or two of these regardless of the year.

Pours out a very nice clear red color. It's somewhere between copper, and a dark amber, nice looking. A little 1.5cm head forms on top, but the bubbles are so loose that it sort of fades quickly. Still looks pretty nice, but the head is a little boring. The smell is interesting. Very clean and crisp, but a very nice caramelly sweetness. I like the smell, but there isn't exactly enough in there. The one other thing that I can find is a bit of toastiness, which seems odd considering the color, I wouldn't expect to find this much burnt, toasty smell in there. The taste is where it gets interesting I think. You get a very nice grainy sweetness, that is filled up and balanced with the roastiness. It's really nice. You also get a nice slight herbal bitterness balanced with sweetness. The yeast prfile is very clean, which brings out the roasted flavors. Part of this flavor almost seems to skip over that moderate nutty, slightly toasty malt flavor I'd expect for the color. I find this really enjoyable and tasty. The body is a little thin, the carbonation rushes in but isn't too exiting. The drinkability is pretty good though. Enjoyable, not too heavy or overdone, but the roastiness is still quite interesting.

Picked this one up at brass rail. Knew nothing about it but a beer brewed with coffee is normally worth a try. I was expecting a nice roasty stout so when i popped this one open i was surprised.

Appearance is a hazy golden/amber with little head and no lace. Nothing special here except for the fact that it wasn't the stout i was expecting.

Smell of the coffee is definately there. It slips into tobacco and some roastyness. If i was in a dark room i would swear it was a stout or porter by the smell, maybe a fun trick to play on someone sometime.

Taste is smokey coffee up front that just kind of fades to nothingness. I don't want to say the coffee dominates because it's not overpowering or too in your face, it's just all i get from this one.

Overall this one was not what i expected but it was worth the try. Certainly an interesting brew and the brewer should be complemented for the creativity. Just kind of missed the mark with me a little.

12oz. bottle into DFH specialty glass on 10/7/09.

A - Hard pour revealed a murky medium brown/burnt sienna body with one-finger bubbly off-white head that reduced to a patchy film and thin ring of retention, depositing spotty lace around the glass.

S - Prominent coffee aroma with lots of fresh roasted malt and a hint of sweet caramel. Subtle citrusy and piney hop notes also emerge as the liquid warmed up a bit.

T - Again, there is a huge coffee presence that carries over from the aroma into the flavor. The bitterness of the coffee is paired with a slight brown sugar and caramel sweetness. There's quite a bit of nuttiness as well. However, the coffee presence dominates the flavor. Finishes with a good bit of earthy, leafy and herbal hop bitterness.

M - Medium bodied with a slight syrupy texture and lively carbonation. Mouthfeel is a tad watery overall. Bitterness actually lingers on the back of the tongue for a while.

D - I felt like this should be a stout. I'm definitely not used to a lighter coffee beer. While it lacked a bit of body, Oscura definitely makes up for it in the aroma and flavor departments.

A: Light brown with amber undertones. Nice white head lasts at one inch. Good carbonation.

S: Nice coffee start with a dark chocolate and roasted aroma. No hops but who cares.
T: Heavy on the coffee but not too bad. Great chocolate undertones with a slight nuttiness and earthy component. The coffee adds a nice acidity. Finishes w a slight burnt roasty flavor.

M: light bodied. Would expect a bit more body with the flavor profile, but good overall.

D: A nice coffee beer. California common, I think not. If u are in the mood for a coffee forward beer, this is a goood choice.

12oz bottle served in a glass beer mug.

Brown color with a short-lived beige head.
Iced hazelnut coffee aroma.
The taste is similar to drinking an iced hazelnut coffee on the first few sips, once I got over that I enjoyed some roasted malt flavors and a light bittering towards the finish.
Light/Medium bodied with a smooth feel, refreshing.
It went down easy enough but I couldn't see drinking more than 2 of these in a sitting.

Poured from a 12oz. bottle into a pint glass:

Appearance and Smell- Poured an amber color with a brown like hue lurking in it. Kind of murky looking. Had a very minimal head but left great lacing down the glass. Smell was of light caramel and citrus with some roastiness present(most likely the cofee), nothing too pungent.

Taste and Mouthfeel-Citrusy, piney taste up front followed by a bitter coffee flavor with subtle caramel like sweetness. It had a very piney dry finish.

Drinkability-This was a pretty interesting brew. Not really in a good or bad way. I'd have another if offered just wouldn't seek it out.

Thanks to tenderbranson69 for sharing this beer, poured chilled into my DFH signature glass.

A - A lightly hazed dark crimson, very good clarity considering the coffee and 2 fingers of light cream -again nice considering the oils of the beans. Streams of lace collect and hold well.

S - The beer is redolent of cold brewed coffee which is pleasant w/ a malty caramel note and light chalky nose

M - A mild malt texture w/ moderate effervescent feel. A nice spice note is felt w/ slightly creamy feel and mild sweet finish

T - The taste is mild w/ coffee at first w/ more nutty coffee mixed w/ an earthy toast taste and light hop flavor. There is a subtle fruit element similar to apple w/ a yeast taste in the finish

D - This is a fine Cali Common. I once brewed a Steam beer based on an Anchor clone recipe w/ cold brewed Panamanian coffee, but this is more seemless in flavor, which is good. The base beer isn't overwhelmend by the beans-well done!

this one pours a medium brown color with a 1/2 inch head and some good sticky lacing the smell is roasted coffee but not overpowering i smell malt and some hops some toffee its good! the taste is roasted coffee first then some sweet malts and toffee with some hops..IMO ... this is a coffee lager and a good one to start with if you want to sample coffee brews of all styles..i like this one its smooth and drinkable again a good place to start.. ill buy it again and ill recommended it for 1st time coffee infused samplers and others who just like coffee brews this one one is definably lighter then the stouts and ports in the coffee style

A: Pours a wonderful amber hue with a tall creamy off white head. Excellent retention with chunks of lace.

S: Tons of fresh bold roasted coffee, like Dunkin Donuts in the morning. Light lactic quality, but coffee dominates.

T: Wonderful fresh coffee flavor. Tons of fresh roasted coffee. Wonderful coffee bitterness without the acid you usually pick up in many of these beers. Lots of sweet caramel lays beneath. I get a bit of cream as well.

M: Medium in body, great carbonation, smooth, and tasty.

D: Crazy Good. I love coffee beers to to be honest this one is as drinkable as they come. The best non stout coffee beer for sure!

A 12 ounce bottle purchased at Abe's in Bethlehem for around $1.75. Glad to see this brewery entering the PA market. Upon pouring into my shaker glass, I was pleasantly surprised to see that this was not another coffee infused porter/stout. Appears the color of iced tea with about two fingers of quickly fading off white foam. Nose and flavor are dominated by notes of medium roasted coffee and rich toasted cereal grains, followed by earthy hops, slightly spicy, hints of citrus, a pleasing bitterness to compliment the sweetness of the caramelized malt. Crisp, bitter, and approaching full bodied with adequate carbonation. A great addition to the PA beer scene.

Thanks to eyncognito for this 12 oz bottle. A California common with coffee added.

A: The beer is a brown amber color, highlighted by orange brightness. The ale retains its translucence. A finger and a half of foamy creme-colored head is lacing around the mouth.

S: Spent coffee grounds drive the nose, a dark roast that isn't overpowering. While not overpowering, it is the depth and breadth of the nose.

T: The beer has a crisp flavor that is equal parts coffee, hops and clean grains. Coffee retains is cold toddy flavor, bitter and bold. Hops are citrusy, a touch of lemon to accompany the coffee. Caramel malts are sweet, a good pairing for the coffee. Hops are the final aspect, mildly bitter even through the coffee. The coffee is a standout, taking hold early and never letting go.

M: Coffee, lots of sweetly bitter coffee. The only drawback is that the coffee covers up any traces of steam beer.

D: Very quaffable, under 6%. I love coffee, beer and coffee in beer. A solid ale, the best I've had from Furthermore.
