Notes/Commercial Description:
Tinder is a German-style Rauchbier (Smoked Beer) that kindles moderate malty sweetness and robust smokiness. Brewed with Bamberg beechwood-smoked malt, this medium-bodied lager ignites distinct campfire smoke flavors and aroma.

Aromatic, bright and balanced, Tinder is bottle conditioned and has an ABV of 6.5%. Scheduled to hit select shelves in late January, Tinder is a limited release beer, only 180bbls were brewed.

From the corked, caged 750 ml. bottle stamped 12/17/17 I think. Part of it is rubbed off. Sampled on June 1, 2014.

The color of the pour is medium amber with a foamy cream colored head and a slight haze to it.

The aroma has a nice smoky malt character with a roasted bready feel to it too. Low hop note.

The body is low to medium with a smooth texture.

The taste brings out those roasted bready malts and a smoky chaser but not the point that you feel you are standing next to a bonfire. I tend to like my rauchbiers smoked to the max but this one is still very delightful.

750ml. Dark golden pour, half finger of frothy white head. Sticks just barely to the glass.

Aroma, meaty campfire, some grainy hay like malt, caramel, grass.

Taste, Gentle caramel ramps up with the beachwood smoke. A real nice gentle malt backbone. A slight herbal grassiness and bitterness. BBQ smoke lingers nicely.

Real smooth real easy drinking. Mouthcoating creamy mouthfeel. No alcohol presence.
May be the best example I've had since visiting Bamberg.

Smells like wood chips, tastes like sitting around a camp fire. Very unique Smoked Lager, completely different from anything I've had that has classified itself as smoked anything. This beer had a special smell/flavor/mouthfeel all it's own. It's extremely rare to find a beer that is this different from anything else AND still be a good, tasty beer. LOVED it!

Bottled on 1/08/14.Pours into a half liter stein a brilliant clear copper with a large blooming white rockycrown that takes forever to settle into a frothy mass.Meaty smokiness in the nose with mild caramel and brown sugar sweetness underneath all the smoke.A smooth creamy mouthfeel makes for easy drinking.Smoke obviously is the main flavor compoent but it isn't in your face, mild sweet dough, pepper, and iron are also thrown into the mix,a bit of toast is more prevalent as I drink more.Pretty easy going down for the size and the feel is great,a solid smoked lager here.

750 ml bottle, bottled on 1/22/14. Pours slightly hazy golden orange with a huge fluffy white head that retains well and leaves some lacing.

The aroma is smokey campfire with a little sweet malt.

The flavor is sweet malt with a lot of heavy smoke. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with slightly sharp carbonation.

Overall, it's a nice smoke beer, but a little much on the sweet side.

Very solid beer. Smoky, medium bodied, and very clean. While I like German versions better, this is a great traditional take on the style.

Poured from the 750 mL bottle into a stein.

A big head results from the pour and a good-looking, copper-colored liquid flows with a bubbly carbonation. The pale, fluggy white head is persistent, probably spurred on by the constant effervescent sensation taking place beneath.

Having recently had Schlenkerla's Marzen, I notice they two have the smoked ham aroma in common. This beer, however, seems a much fainter, tame version. It's still smokey and reminiscent of a campfire, but one that was doused last night. There is a heavy woodiness, maybe cedar, and a hint of a spice I can't put my finger on. I don't detect much as far as malts, although there's a hint of sweetness. I shouldn't sound so demeaning, because this beer actually smells tasty.

Speaking of tasty, I get a bit of a chocolate flavor here. There's still smoked ham, still a lot of smokiness, but I get something sweeter, maybe even some vanilla too.

Tinder's pretty easy to drink, but the body still has some thickness to it. I'm actually quite impressed. I think this is a close to impeccable effort at the rauchbier style. Ultimately, I'd have to decide which is the cheaper of the two between this and Schlenkerla.

750 ml caged and corked bottle, bottled on date of 01/20/14. Served in a mug, the beer pours a slightly hazy orange/amber color with an inch and a half off-white head that stays around for a while. There's also a good amount of lacing. Aroma is nice and smoky, the brew smells like smoked malt/meats, caramel malt, band-aids and some light grassiness. Taste is pretty much just like the aroma, but there's also a malty sweetness noticeable too. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's coating, smooth and goes down easy enough. It's also well carbonated. I liked this brew, I wouldn't mind buying this again. $7.99 a bottle.

Poured from a 750 mL corked & caged bottle into a Becker pilsner glass. Moderate hand. Bottled on 2/17/13.

A: Caramel-colored body with nice clarity. 3+ fingers of off-white head with good retention. Nice lacing.

S: Campfire smoke and peat. Toasted malt with bread, cracker notes. Toffee. Faint, indistinct hop character in the periphery.

T: Malty sweetness & moderate smoke initially. A light to moderate hop bitterness develops to a semi-dry finish. Essence of wood, campfire and smoked meat linger in the aftertaste. Light alcohol presence.

M: Moderate carbonation with a thick, luxurious body for a lager. Suits the smoky/malt-forward flavor profile well.

O: I found this to be fairly reminiscent of Schlenkerla's Marzen with a slightly less complex smoke and a more American-style hopping. Well balanced with a tactful, tasty smoke. Good stuff!

Prost!
