Bottle I brought to share at Retsinis' tasting.

Bottled 1/8/14.

Pours a hazy orange with a foamy off-white head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of smoked malt, campfire, and Band-Aid aromas. Taste is much the same with campfire and Band-Aid flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of smoke bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with solid smoke characteristics, but the Band-Aid I am getting is a bit too much in my opinion.

With the thoughts of Bamburg close at hand, their famed smoked beers make their way to far-reaching Utah where the flavors of mesquite and smoke are paramount- this is a smoked beer brewed in smokey heaven.

Darker than lager, but paler than "pale" its light amber-gold hue is hazy with smoky bits as the aromas of honey baked hams, campfire and a hickory smoke charms the nose. Its caramel and toasted-sweet taste is mildly citrusy even though those smoky tones are paramount on the early palate.

What ensues is a deepening smoky sweetness that gains intensity as as those smoke phenols penetrate deep into the taste buds. But as the sweetness loosens its grip, the smoke drifts to hover above the palate to allow a lager-like drinkability to oddly refresh the palate despite its savory periphery.

Its finish is smoky-dry but not ashy or acrid. Supported well with malt structure and background sweetness, a piney hop bitterness smolders beneath and seems to peak through as if it were a pale ale. Mild spiciness adds a pep to the arid smoke flavors that return in waves after wave in aftertaste.

Bottled on 1/08/14.Pours into a half liter stein a brilliant clear copper with a large blooming white rockycrown that takes forever to settle into a frothy mass.Meaty smokiness in the nose with mild caramel and brown sugar sweetness underneath all the smoke.A smooth creamy mouthfeel makes for easy drinking.Smoke obviously is the main flavor compoent but it isn't in your face, mild sweet dough, pepper, and iron are also thrown into the mix,a bit of toast is more prevalent as I drink more.Pretty easy going down for the size and the feel is great,a solid smoked lager here.

Hazed dark amber in the wine glass with a decent head. Pleasantly spritzy in the mouth. Huge smokehouse, smoked meat aroma. Medium body with an oily texture.

This really does taste exactly like bacon. Sweet and apple, malty, and relentlessly smoky. I tried it with food and without, and didn't like it much either way. It's a nice smoke flavor, it's just so non-beery and over the top. A slight bitterness emerges in the aftertaste.

I guess this is drinkable, after splitting the bottle, but it's more of a fascination with how weird this stuff is. From the 22 oz bottle purchased at the state liquor store in Salt Lake City.

Pours a slightly hazy, bright golden orange color with apricot colored edges and a two finger, yellowish-beige head that very slowly settles into a thick, lasting ring. Very good retention with a pillowy cap that takes a while to settle, leaving streaks of soapy lacing in it's path.

Sweet, slightly smokey aroma with a nice charcoal/campfire character countered by sweet malt backbone. Decent smoke character but not too intense with hints of butane, ash and smoked meat countered by sweet caramel malt, toffee and biscuit. I would have preferred a little more smoke but it's not tame by any stretch if the imagination. Inviting nose on this beer that's reminiscent of a lighter version of an authentic German rauch bier.

Medium body with crisp carbonation and a strong smoked malt flavor that's heavier than the aroma suggests. The beechwood smoke really stands out with hints of ash, charcoal, burnt malt, and barbecued bacon. This is countered by a sweet malt backbone and light bready yeast character. Caramel sweetness along with toffee, hazelnut, bread and subtle dark fruit esters. Very good imitation of a rauch bier flavor profile but slightly less intense. Similar to something from Schlenkerla but the smoke flavor isn't quite as rich or complex. Still, this beer is well balanced and easy to drink while packing a decent amount of smokey flavor.

Mildly chill hazed copper colored beer with a massive off-white colored head.

Strong smoke and herbal noble hops. Clean pilsner malt aroma. Scents of medicine and soap. Mostly though this is smoke scented.

Starts out mildly sweet and smoky but not and overpowering smoke flavor. Mild bitterness and slightly medicinal tasting. Pleasantly smoky and complex, this just screams for a good Ham and Cheese Sandwich to go with it. There are smokier Rauchbiers out there but being the strongest isn't the point.

Mouthfeel is good and about perfect for a lager.

Overall this is outstanding. Pair this with BBQ or a heavy on the bacon breakfast.

Pours a nice slightly cloudy darker yellow color, very nice carbonation, with a very nice thick creamy one-finger plus white head, lots of sticky lacing left behind. The nose is malty, slightly smoky, slightly nutty. The taste is sweet, malty, nice smoke note. Medium body, with a slightly dry/bitter finish. Overall a pretty tasty brew.

Poured from a cork and cage into a shaker pint, the beer is a slightly hazed, golden coloring with a lot of carbonation action throughout the body and a tall, fluffy, big bubbled, off-white head that starts well over an inch, but slowly settles in to a low profile while you drink. Aromas of toasted grains, campfire smoke, charred wood, hints of carbon and sulfur, and a subtle toffee sweetness. Smells great. Flavors are light and smooth, with a forward note of charred wood and campfire coals, a biscuit backbone, subtle hops bitterness, and a solid toffee sweetness. Pretty damn balanced, and the increased carbonation keeps the brew crisp on your tongue. The smoky and woody characteristics make for a long lingering aftertaste, even past the slightly effervesced, clean finish. This is a great beer. It's like a camping trip in liquid form.

Poured into a Seattle Beer Week pint glass. Pours a medium golden amber with a fine one finger off-white head with great retention and lacing. Mild aroma of sweet malt and smokehouse smokiness. The smoke isn't intense, but covers and subtle flavors here. Flavor is caramel malt, meaty smokehouse, campfire, finishing with nicely integrated malt and grassy hops leaving a long, lingering pleasant smokiness. Medium bodied with a good creaminess. A very nicely made rauchbier. My initial impression was "not as intense as Schlenkerla" (my standard for fine rauchbiers), but immediately was pleased by the complete balance and integration of the flavors. The malt and hops are definiately masked by the smokiness, but the impression is that they would be quite good by themselves. The smoke is somewhat more subdued than European rauchbiers, but is plenty assertive. Quite nice and another excellent effort in the Crooked series. A pleasure.

750 ml caged and corked bottle, bottled on date of 01/20/14. Served in a mug, the beer pours a slightly hazy orange/amber color with an inch and a half off-white head that stays around for a while. There's also a good amount of lacing. Aroma is nice and smoky, the brew smells like smoked malt/meats, caramel malt, band-aids and some light grassiness. Taste is pretty much just like the aroma, but there's also a malty sweetness noticeable too. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's coating, smooth and goes down easy enough. It's also well carbonated. I liked this brew, I wouldn't mind buying this again. $7.99 a bottle.

From the corked, caged 750 ml. bottle stamped 12/17/17 I think. Part of it is rubbed off. Sampled on June 1, 2014.

The color of the pour is medium amber with a foamy cream colored head and a slight haze to it.

The aroma has a nice smoky malt character with a roasted bready feel to it too. Low hop note.

The body is low to medium with a smooth texture.

The taste brings out those roasted bready malts and a smoky chaser but not the point that you feel you are standing next to a bonfire. I tend to like my rauchbiers smoked to the max but this one is still very delightful.

Pours in my mug a orange-gold body with two finger that dies quick but a lovely lace ring all over glass with a meaty smokiness (more a spice rub or something than bacon or beef jerky) and I'm not getting much else. While the taste is mostly meaty, gamey, the beer is actually smooth despite the dry meat patches which are a little rough here and there, and there is juiciness/creaminess to the beer that helps it go down easy. Bit of a spicy sweet edge (since I'm talking meat flavor my first thought is chipotle bbq sauce) as well that I can't put my finger on along with a bread/cracker like crispness in the finish.

750ml. Dark golden pour, half finger of frothy white head. Sticks just barely to the glass.

Aroma, meaty campfire, some grainy hay like malt, caramel, grass.

Taste, Gentle caramel ramps up with the beachwood smoke. A real nice gentle malt backbone. A slight herbal grassiness and bitterness. BBQ smoke lingers nicely.

Real smooth real easy drinking. Mouthcoating creamy mouthfeel. No alcohol presence.
May be the best example I've had since visiting Bamberg.

Slightly cloud pale gold beer with a frothy, airy head. The nose offers some medium-light smokiness. The flavor is likewise full of smokey phenols, though not much else--perhaps a little acidic. If you're looking for smoke, his beer has it, but it's rather one-dimensional, compared to malty examples from Schlenkerla. Highly smokey beers are rare enough that some people might find this interesting, but I don't.
