Uinta beers recently arrived in San Luis Obispo. I picked up a four pack of this Seventeenth Anniversary Barley Wine Ale at Sandy's, where they keep all of their beers refrigerated and away from direct sunlight.
Poured into a Cigar City snifter.
Appearance: A straight-down-the-center pour only netted a hair-thin ring of tight, khaki head. A quick swirl livens everything up though - creamy, tan foam that clings to the glass walls and shows half decent retention. Body is very dark; the color of earthy clay. When held to light, it glows crimson and displays excellent clarity. Not too shabby.
Smell: Brown sugar, raisins, molasses, leafy hops, and a hint of booze. As the beer warms, more aromas appear, notably toffee and cocoa. Funny, because the first three bottles I had (this is the last from that four pack) all smelled like dirty pennies. This one doesn't show any off notes. It's a bit mild, but shows nice complexity and character.
Taste: Brown sugar and raisins play prominent roles, just as in the taste. Hearty grains and bread crust help to form a solid malt backbone. Red currants and booze peek through just a bit, and earthy, piney hops kick-start a long-lasting, bitter finish. Not too special, but I don't notice any major flaws.
Mouthfeel: Rich, malty, very lightly carbonated, and bitter. Finishes clean and dry. I'd personally like more residual sweetness and intensity, but this is alright.
Overall: Not a barley wine that I'd go back to, but I can understand how others might dig this. Pretty mild in terms of aroma and flavor strength, though it offers up a good deal of complexity in each arena. Worth a try, I suppose.

My bottle was picked up from a bottle shop the date of the bottled on is 10/12/12...I bought it 2/28/14. Overall appears a deep murky mahogany brown hue big tan head forming thick, with fine speckled lacing. Smells like an aged barleywine, what does that mean the hops have tamed, the malts are full of over ripened fruit and big alcohol notes. The smell is of spicy plum and raisin notes, that I can't quit sniffing on. Dark fruit, brown sugar, malt layers in the flavor, nothing like an aged Bigfoot, a hint of diacetyl or wet cardboard in the malt character just from oxidation. Plum and dark fruit sugars coat the palate, not bad at all...well aged smoothed out Anniversary IPA bottled on 10/12/12. Mouthfeel is creamy, effervescent carbonation medium bodied texture. Overall it's good barleywine, I'm intrigued to see what this beer tastes like fresh, with 2 years of age it's fantastic.
