12oz bottle (bottled on 7/16/09) received from Jmoore50 in the Black Booty 3 BIF. Thanks again Jordan! Poured into a Portsmouth goblet.
A - Pours a medium amber brown with ruby highlights. A thin head briefly appears and just as quickly drops to a oily looking film on the surface and a thin collar. Good looking barleywine.
S - A hint of sweetness over the top of some rich caramel and a small amount of molasses. A bit of fruity esters, some alcohol, a bit of black pepper. Not much for hops.
T - Well balanced...hop bitterness is pretty high but in perfect harmony with the malt - neither takes the lead. There is still enough sweet and caramelly flavors to offset the bitterness...and I'm still getting a bit of black pepper in the flavor too. Nice smooth drinking barleywine.
M - Body is medium, as is the carbonation. Carbonation is perhaps a touch on the high side of ideal, at least for my tastes, but still good. Only a small mouth coating effect...like it's trying but can't quite get it done. Seems like the oily qualities that are also there win out in the end.
D - Hmm, I find a lot of ironies in this beer while doing the review. From a pure technical standpoint, I find this to not stand up particularly well to the finest examples of the style, but at the same time it is very enjoyable. I think it is it's ease of drinking that makes the difference. The richness and total sipper qualities of the best barleywines are so far from this, they don't even seem to be the same style. This is quite an easy drinker due to its excellent balance. In short, I think I like this beer much more than the review might indicate.
