Draft pour into a goblet at Brix in Sunset Beach.
A: Clear, medium golden color with one finger of white foam head. Heavy step-wise lacing remains on the glass.
S: Fairly assertive toasted grain is paired with savory herbal hops in an appealing and unusual way for a pale ale. Banana esters and bready yeast also add some hefeweizen elements, making for an interesting, if unconventional, smell.
T: Begins dry, with strong floral and herbaceous hops that keep their dominance over acidity that rises early but tapers off well before becoming distracting. A spike of dynamic lemon--juice and zest--ushers in the grainy middle that is rich with pilsner malt (but without the usual attendant honey flavor). The finish is mild, faintly floral, and toasty, with restrained bitterness.
M: Thin viscosity, wet on the palate but leaves a slow-growing acidic glow, with moderate carbonation.
D/O: This is a light and easy-going pale ale that might seem unique if others brewed in a similar vein had not been recently encountered. It does not fall far from the English Thornbridge Brewery's Kipling, with a similar pairing of pilsner malt and savory floral hops. It also looks like Cismontane's Pandion pale ale, coming in at a few shades lighter than the norm for the style, although that other beer presents a more focused West Coast hop profile as influenced by the citra cultivar.
Serving type: on-tap
