Clear brown colored ale with a small tan colored head. Nothing outstanding looking.

Sells sweet and smoky with a mainly coffee and caramel aroma. Scent of roasted pinion nuts.

Initially this is is coffee with caramel syrup. Middle of the pack for sweetness this is like a slightly under-carbonated coffee soda. Mildly bitter, for a Utah law beer this isn't boring.

Overall worth a try but not quite a six pack level of try.

Appearance: Dark brown with an off white head. Head doesn't stick around long.

Smell: chocolaty

taste: roasty chocolate, hints of coffee. Nice bitter malt finish.

Mouthfeel. Bubbly and light on the tongue. A bit odd for a porter

Overall: Very tasty beer. Only thing unusual is the mouthfeel, otherwise very enjoyable.

look: 3.5 | smell: 3.5 | taste: 3 | feel: 3.5 | overall: 3

Appearance- Pours up an okay amount of head which has decent retention. The head is a light beige while the body is a dark chocolate brown which shows hints of garnet at the bottom of the glass when it is held up to the light. The lacing is almost sheeting.

Nose- Started off with a pretty sour coffee smell with some brown bread in the background but now is showing hints of chocolate and more rounded coffee notes. Some cocoa. The glass only shows minor roasted notes. Swirling shows a more poignant coffee note with some cocoa that tends toward cardboard.

Taste- Large notes of cocoa with a vague chocolate in the background. Light notes of coffee on the finish. Much more balanced and subtle than the nose. No real flaws (shows none of the sourness of the aroma) but fairly thin. Some hints of chocolate and minor chalkiness on the finish. Not really much to say about this beer as it is pretty boring. Average to above average but closer to average. Perhaps a little old but 4 months shouldn't be too much of an issue with a porter. Maybe a little oatmeal.

Mouthfeel- A little less than medium bodied with light carbonation. Slight grittiness on the finish.

Drinkability- Goes down very easily and is pretty sessionable at 4%. Very boring though. Standard craft beer six pack beer price which makes Black Butte a much better bargain.

Overall- Average to above average. Worth a try if you go in with little expectations. Wouldn't buy again but would drink if given it.

12oz : tulip

Pours a deep, deep mahogany, near black with a thin, foamy, toffee colored head.

Roasty, light cocoa, fairly standard taste here. Nothing unpleasant, but nothing memorable either.

Medium- body, light foamy carbonation.

A decent porter, fairly standard flavor profile, but nothing exciting either.

12oz bottle poured into a snifter. Bottled on 7/23/13.

A: Pours a dark brown appearing black in the glass with a thin lightly tanned head. Leaves some lacing on the sides. Head dissipates fairly quickly. Clear body with a ruby tinge.

S: Roasty malts with dark fermented fruits. Nice cocoa aspect, perhaps a hint of coffee.

T: Mild flavor that is well balanced and sessionable. Has roasted malts but not as in depth as other porters. Alcohol is well hidden.

M: Light body that maintains a creamy aspect. Smooth and very easy drinking.

Overall the goal of this beer seems to be a light porter you can drink all night. It hits that niche right on the money. Has tasty flavors that would make me come back again.

12 oz bottle into a pint glass.

A: Pours a dark ruby color lacking in opacity. The head is a two finger mocha shade. It retains itself nicely, and leaves behind some spotty lacing.

S: As expected, it's rather mild here. Some light piny hops, a touch of chocolate, and a mild minty note make up the majority of the aroma. What's there is decent, but there just isn't much to begin with.

T: For a 4% porter, this is really damn good. It starts with a wave of herbal, piny hop bitterness, and finishes with some pleasant dark chocolate and coffee flavors. Though it's simple, it's quite savorable, which is downright incredible for 4%.

M: This has a good body for something so 'light'. It's also very clean, if not quite as dry as I'd like/expect. Drinkability isn't superb, I must say. However, this means that just a little will go a long way.

O: I could genuinely session this. Normally, when I come across a lightweight beer like this, my first thought is to see how quick I could chug it down, order another one, and repeat until I'm spraying puke on the poor soul next to me. This one, on the other hand, actually has some decent flavor, ergo I kind of don't want to kill it in 4.3 seconds. And there we go, this is a session beer done right. Now if only it weren't priced like the average porter 6 pack...
