Notes/Commercial Description:
Detour blazes the trail for fresh and bold Double IPAs. Four varieties of hops combine to step up the flavor profile. A hoppy adventure that finishes dry. Big in alcohol and character.

I've had this beer many times in 750mL format. Walked into the store today to find it i 4 pack. Was stoked. Loved this beer the times I had it before. Let me tell you now, the recipe must have changed, because this beer is even better than the Detour in 750mL format!

A: Ruby red, grapefruit-ish. Transparent. Constant carbonation rising. Good head retention.

S: Citrus, tropical fruits, slight pine. Very nice. Good caramel malt backbone.

T: Heavy on the citrus. I don't mind! It is awesome. Malt compliments the huge hop profile and hides the alcohol (9.5%).

M: Heavier than most DIPA, which actually helps limit the intake of this delicious beer. Bitter, but not overly bitter.

O: Very good DIPA. Not mindblowing (but does every beer have to be minblowing?), but for $10/4pack@ 9.5 % abv, it is a great deal! Wonderful hop aroma and taste. Recommend.

Poured into an oversized wine glass a clear deep bronse with a great sticky two finger white head that left two solid rings of lace as it settled slowly, poured with a great clarity.Nice grassy and citric tones in the nose, not in your face but well done,a bit of leather as well.Like alot of DIPA's I find it a little sweet but the hops give a good shot of herb and grapefruit, the alcohol sweetness hinders the drinkability a little. Its a pretty good DIPA and reasonably priced,I would get again.

Appearance - This poured a thick, hazy, brownish-orange in color with a good head.

Smell - The hop profile is rich and complex with a nice, bitter tangerine but the malts are overly biscuity for the style.

Taste - The hops are a little less pronounced at the taste but again the malts are huge and full of English-style biscuits.

Mouthfeel - This is a huge, full-bodied DIPA with good carbonation and a strong bitter finish in spite of the sweet malt balance.

Drinkability - It's basically the opposite of a session beer but if you like big beers give this a try.

Had on tap at the Malted Barley in RI.

A: This poured a slightly hazy copper with some off-white head.

S: It smelled like sweet tangerine and grapefruit and mango, with honey malt and a bit of pineapple and bready yeast.

T: It tasted like apricot and grapefruit, with some pineapple and honey malt and floral hops. It had a super mellow bitter and wet aftertaste.

M: It was oily with a little carbonation.

D: This had a great scent and good taste, even though it wasn't bold or complex. The body was good, and the alcohol was very well hidden, so it was super easy to drink. Not quite a top tier IPA, but not bad.

Mmm...Polygamist beer. I thought Utah had a 4% law but oh well.

An amber-hued brew with a nice head on it's shoulders. Hints of pine and grapefruit with a chewy malt aroma dance and frolicing in my nose brain. This one is packing some heat. The taste is much like the nose but add some sharp alcohol notes.

Pretty good for Utah beer but not something I would pay money for.

A - Extremely cloudy, very dark for an American DIPA, low carbonation, small head that fades quickly.

S - Lots of hop and malt on the nose, tons of citrus hop, toffee malt, smells more like a barely wine to me than a DIPA.

T - I'll start by staying this does not taste bad, but not shockingly the smell translates to the taste...and it tastes more like a barely wine. There is a lot of hop throughout, again mostly citrus but some pine also. Tons of caramel malt and I think some Munich too as there is a good biscuit like backbone. Finishes with a strong hop bitterness balanced by a lot of caramel and dextrin malts. Alcohol twange does hit you right at the end. This is Crooked alright, because it really tastes like a blend of an IPA and a barely wine.

M - Full bodied and the low carbonation accentuates this, the alcohol warming at the end helps get you ready for another sip.

D - This is an interesting beer, but one that I don't think I need to have again...in fact I would have liked to share the 750ml bottle I had. Makes me want to try their Crooked Line barely wine just to see what it is like...maybe like a DIPA???

Corked Bottle
A- Dark gold-honey-amber with creamy off white head
S- Heavy caramelly malt body, with a note of hops
T- Not your average DIPA but delicious. A crispness that seems almost impossible
M- Very nice small bubbles make it much drier (nice!) than any DIPA I've ever had
O- Great beer and worth the extra $1-2 you would spend per volume of other DIPA's. Would buy it again and would recommend it

This beer is an amber color with a medium-sized white head. It had the prettiest lace I have ever seen.

Aroma of citrus and sweet malt.

Taste was mostly grapefruit and orange. A bit of caramel.

Hoppy, but not too aggressive.

Nice beer. I'm glad this brewery arrived in Maine.

750ml bottle, bottled on 3/30/10. Pours a clear light amber with a big creamy white head that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is floral and soapy, fruity (melon), piney hops with a little stinkiness (summit?). It's pretty subdued though.

The flavor is sweet malts with some melon and soapiness. It has a pretty big grassy bitterness with some pepper and stinkiness. There's a huge amount of harsh bitterness that lingers in the aftertaste. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with lower carbonation and almost watery.

Overall, I just couldn't get into it. A little reminiscent of Gubna (summit hops?), but not as well done. The soapiness was a little weird too. And it wasn't really well balanced with the abrasive bitterness in the finish.

750ml Bottle
Caged/Corked
Bottled On: 5/25/11

Pours a nice rich shade of almond amber, under a rather large med. tan head, that stays, leaving all kinds of froth, sheeting and loads of lacing.

Nose has just a hint of hops and more caramel malts.

Tasty and enjoyable ale. Less hoppy then expected for a "DIPA", waves of maple malts seem to carry the load here. Smooth and heady stuff. But lacking the hope bite of the stars of the style. Nicely crafted and worth a try if this stuff is distributed to you neck of the woods.
