Style | ABV
American Double / Imperial IPA |  9.50% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
Detour blazes the trail for fresh and bold Double IPAs. Four varieties of hops combine to step up the flavor profile. A hoppy adventure that finishes dry. Big in alcohol and character.

look: 3.5 | smell: 3.25 | taste: 3 | feel: 3.5 | overall: 3.25

Poured into a Lost Abbey glass on 3/28/13

Bottled on: 02/27/13

A) Clear. Surprising clear even. Dulled and faded tobacco; dark for a DIPA. Two finger head of loose foam drops to 1/4th inch and leaves delicate lace meanderings. Slow rising bubbles. Thicker lace farther down.

S) Spritzy, herbal hop aroma; it has a botanical gin quality to it. Sweet candy citrus fruit, quarts of hop oils, pine, tea leaves, sugary grapefruit, sweet cracker and hints of sugar cookies. Perfume-like.

T) Tastes every bit as oily as it smells; perhaps even more so. Dank oils and pine resin. The herbal components throw me though - it's a cross between candy fruits, perfume and aerosol spray. Bombastic amount of rolling, grainy malt. I don't think it is pilsner malt, but it does have a more neutral, clean aspect that I associate with pilsner malts in an IPA. The finish scrapes against bitterness which leaves me with the same feeling of brushing up against poison ivy after a stroll in the woods (editor's note: I have no idea what was going through my mind when I wrote that).

M) Full, slick body and feel. Carbonation is moderate when sparring with the size of the beer. Not terribly boozy.

D) It's like hiking on a different trail - some of the same pretty stuff you're used to seeing but with some new sights and smells (editor's note: This is why I don't review anymore; that description is ridiculous).

A - Hazy gold, 1 1/2 fingers off white head. Good lacing.

S - Piney, spicy hops. Strong malt backbone. Light caramel.

T - Citrus hops, malty sweetness, spice, heavy bitterness. A little bit boozy.

M - Thick mouthfeel. Coats the palate. Medium carb,

O - A solid double IPA. A little on the heavy side at 9.5%. The alcohol is relatively well-hidden.
Enjoyable, but probably not something I'd seek out again.

A little malt in the nose.
Taste: Strong hops up front. Very piney and resinous. Fairly well balanced with the malts without being too sweet.
Long lasting pine resin finish with a little sweetness.
Overall true to their regular 'Hop Notch" IPA, but with beefed up characteristics.
Bought as 4 pack for~$10; potential repeat buy.
