We pop the cork and cage on this guy and pour a brew of apple cider-auburn. It initially holds a near white head of about a finger, but that quickly disappears to a covering of big bubbles congregating around the edges of the glass. Specks of lacing appear intermittently. There is a definite haze to the liquid, but no outright sediment is noted. Carbonation appears to be low. As we sniff, the nose fills with grapefruity hops, caramel malts, and an unfiltered, herbal spice. It is very earthy. This is balanced by sweetness, of cooked honey, hints of molasses, and that sweet, fruity citrus. As we sip, subdued but soapy hops hit up front. There is a bittering, from the hops and, it seems, from an additional biting lemon character. Moving through the middle the hops carry through, but are cut here by malts and a fruity sweetness that disappears as quickly as it arrives. The finish, again, continues with hops. They are less bittering by this point, and the sweetness, too, shows a revival. This time it is more sugary than fruity, but to the same effect. The aftertaste shows more elements of the nose than of the taste. The hops here breathe more grapefruit than soap, but there is still that lemon citrus twang sifting through. The body is surprisingly on the lighter side, and the carbonation is low to medium. While the bubbles don't exactly punch the tongue the carbonation is felt in the stomach, leaving the drinker feeling a bit burpy. The feel to each sip is slick, with hops, but otherwise approaches light and watery. There is little coating, and the mouth is left on the drier side. The abv is within range and the beer drinks somewhere in the middle.
Overall, what we enjoyed most about this brew was the hop presence in the aroma. From the first air of the bottle the hops were bright with grapefruit and inviting. The taste, however, was anticlimactic. For a double, especially with such a decent aroma, the main event should be the pop of the taste. To this we were a bit disappointed. There was also an "unfiltered" vibe about it, though we weren't able to find any information on the bottle alluding to this. It just seemed unfinished, and perhaps a little refinement could clean up the flavors on this one, making it more of a competitor.

Uncork the 750ml bottle and you immediately get a beautiful citrus smell. Poured with a 2 finger off white head that turned to a nice frothy foam, and left great lacing. Darker golden color with a bit of orange and not quite clear. Taste is strong with citrus, especially grapefruit, and hops, also with a very nice aftertaste. Mouthfeel crisp and creamy with strong carbonation. Impressive lack of taste of alcohol for 9.5%abv. Overall I would recommend, and will buy again.
