Detour blazes the trail for fresh and bold Double IPAs. Four varieties of hops combine to step up the flavor profile. A hoppy adventure that finishes dry. Big in alcohol and character.

This beer isnt an example of what to exPect out of a DIPA but it is a great take on the style that I'm glad a friend pulled off the shelf. This was bottled 3 23 12 so I had it just short of 4 months old. Smell reveals that this is very strong in hops and sweets. It reminds me of a hop liquor truffle with toffee and caramel. Taste starts with a great bite from the carbonation and hop combination- a little nit of that citrusy hop. Then it becomes smooth with influences of raisin and toffee like sweetness. Swallows dry and creamy. This is a very flavorful and hefty beer. Would like to Have this again. Suggest to serve with company.

Serving Type - Bottle

Appearance - Dark burnt tan/brown, cloudy with a minimal 1/8 inch head. Nice sticky lacing.

Smell - Grapefruit, orange, pineapple, tangerine. lemon, a little funky note along with caramel malts at the finish.

Taste - First sip brings in a odd malt profile that soon gets crushed by bitter hops and alcohol. Very sweet, almost to the point of sickening. Pineapple, grapefruit and tropical flavors are picked up after the initial blast of malts. Very warm alcohol at the finish along with a crushing amount of hop bitterness.

Motuhfeel - Unreal blast of caramel malts crushes the tongue. Bitter hops and alcohol come in and nail the palate. Aftertaste is bitter, and alcohol warm.

Overall - Ehh, this isn't very good. Way overboard on sweet malts, and the alcohol is not needed either. Nothing id recommend or want again, that simple.

Best by date of 8/15/14 it looks great in the glass, pours a deep ruby caramelized malt hue with beige khaki light head, forms fine even lacing around the sides of my chalice.

Aroma...smells like a barleywine with big earthy dank pine resin, much like a Bigfoot from Sierra Nevada. Big caramel malts, alcohol is evident, but that pine resin and pine needles comes forth in every smell.

Flavor huge malt driven backbone, earthy dank American hops, pine needle provides the lingering bitterness upfront this is the maltiest double IPA I've ever come across stylistically for me this is a barleywine...and it drinks like a barleywine booze hits the palate just as hard as the malt train driving the show.

Mouthfeel has cloying butterscotch/caramelized sugars that end in the brashest of all big IPAs/Barleywines I've ever had so harsh on the palate. This glass should be in the shape of a sledgehammer so I can bludgeon myself with it, when I'm done with the beer. Carbonation barely carries the beer on the palate with each sip which adds to the cloying qualities of this big ass brash DIPA.

Overall, why can Hop Knosh be so damn good and refreshing and their DIPA feel like it's trying to steal my soul? That my friends is the question of the day!!!
