American Double / Imperial IPA |  9.50% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
Detour blazes the trail for fresh and bold Double IPAs. Four varieties of hops combine to step up the flavor profile. A hoppy adventure that finishes dry. Big in alcohol and character.

Bought the Large Bottle at Whole Foods. The package was the reason I bought it on impulse at WFs. I could not resist the bottle with a cork, for a Double IPA. I was not disappointed and found it worthy of mention.

Appearance: it has a cloudy copper color, and for that is the only real disappointment for me in this beer. It's off white foam head does not set off the color of the beer. Sorry the visual was less then stellar. But the lacing was along the whole glass was great.

Smell: Citrus on the side of orange or tangerine, and alcohol come out.

Taste: Big citrusy hit up front, with a stung dry finish.
It hits your mouth, and lingers, a longing dry feel that makes you want to drink some more. This left my mouth dehydrated and I Got some water so I would not drink this great Double IPA to quickly.

It is big on alcohol as you get in some Barley Wines, but without the sweetness you can get in some high alcohol beers. But this beer has only a hint of malt sweetness.

MouthFeel:A dry and astringent bitterness.

Overall: I tasty member of the Double IPA list! I would be a repeat buyer, and would recommend it to others to try.

A - Hazy gold, 1 1/2 fingers off white head. Good lacing.

S - Piney, spicy hops. Strong malt backbone. Light caramel.

T - Citrus hops, malty sweetness, spice, heavy bitterness. A little bit boozy.

M - Thick mouthfeel. Coats the palate. Medium carb,

O - A solid double IPA. A little on the heavy side at 9.5%. The alcohol is relatively well-hidden.
Enjoyable, but probably not something I'd seek out again.

A little malt in the nose.
Taste: Strong hops up front. Very piney and resinous. Fairly well balanced with the malts without being too sweet.
Long lasting pine resin finish with a little sweetness.
Overall true to their regular 'Hop Notch" IPA, but with beefed up characteristics.
Bought as 4 pack for~$10; potential repeat buy.

12 oz. bottle poured into a Burley Oak snifter

A: A mostly clear copper body with only a wisp of a head with a collar and ok lacing.

S: Interesting subdued citrus with a mainline of malts. Some decent fruity esters in there.

T: Odd taste with a lot of pine. Slightly sticky on the backend, with a weird kind of burn in the back of the throat (this must be from the beer because I had only had some pretzels, a homemade sour cream dip and this beer). Lots of alcohol in here, but not in the hot/burning sense, but mostly in the flavor and esters. You get a lot of it in the body. There is like a cinnamon or cardamom on the backend. Mostly malts and sweet at that.

M: Coarse and oily, but a pretty thin body overall.

O: I bought this because I thought it was a limited release and not a year round one. I realize my confusion came from the fact that it used to be in a 750.
