Poured into teku glass. A clear dark mohagany brown with a 1/2 finger brown head that dissipates rather slowly leaving nice lace. Nice dried stone fruits and brown sugar in the nose. Taste follows with dried fruit, raisins, cherry, hints of bourbon and some alchohol, but unfortunately it has a slightly unpleasant bitterness that is somewhat different that a hoppy bitterness. It might appeal to some but detracted from the beer for me. Mouth is substantial, slightly viscous, sweet, but not quite cloying. Overall, a decent attempt but unfortunately it misses the mark for me.

In a snifter this beer was a dark brown color with a small tan head. There was a smidgeon of lace.

Aroma was sweet caramel and vanilla.

Taste followed aroma, caramel and vanilla. But there was also some dark fruit that showed up in the taste. And, lo and behold, hops.

In fact, this was a fairly hoppy beer. They didn't dominate the taste, but complimented it very well.

750ml bottle, bottled 4/1/10. Pours a medium brown (cola color) with a fairly large creamy off white head that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is bourbon, pepper, sweet caramel, some cola and some floral notes.

The flavor is sweet caramel malts, some cola and bourbon. The finish is some grassy bitterness and alcohol (pretty harsh and warming). The mouthfeel is medium bodied with good carbonation.

Overall, not too impressive. It's not well balanced. The cola is odd and the bourbon and alcohol are overdone.

750ml brown magnum.

Massive head w/ a good amount of stickage. Dark rudy color has clarity in the light. Estery w/ some fusel bourbon barrel aromas, caramel, vanilla and figs for a big sweet nose. Creamy and smooth all over the full-ish body. Big bready maltiness of toasted grain, caramel and dried hay. Alcohol is very noticeable but not hot, estery with booze soaked figs. Wood and vanilla and a drying finish complete this beer.

Wood aging done right, I really dig this brew.

Bomber, caged and corked, with Brewed on dating right on the label...how tough was that?...

Pour is ruby tinged, darker amber, murky, the darker tan head is dense, lasting and luxorious. leaves wild, high webs of fine ass lace.

Malt forward nose, with some booze, caramel, burnt sugars and whiskey.

Super smooth drinking barley wine, very dry finish. Notes of dark and burnt malts, smoke, toffee, scotch. Big and smoothly flavorful. Easy drinking, quality offering.

Thanks to ericandersnavy for sharing this bottle. This was an aged bottle (at least 2-3 years) that was labeled as Uinta Bourbon Barrel Barley Wine, but it is the same beer as Cockeyed Copper.

The beer pours a red-amber color with a tan head. The aroma is bourbon with some oak and dark fruit notes. The flavor is caramel, toffee, oak, bourbon and some alcohol. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Pours burgandyish. Love the color. Smells of raisins, figs, and bourbon. Taste was much less sweet than I was expecting, possibly due to the bourbon. Very nicely balanced. Tastes just like the nose but the bourbon is more present. Reminds me more of an ale than a barley wine. Bourbon is noticeable but not over powering. Still very sweet. This is a sipper for sure. I bought two bottles and I'm very interested to see what happens with some age on it.

Edit: 8-14-11 I previously said "reminds me more of an ale than a barleywine". My taste is getting better. Definitely a barleywine. Scratch that previous statement. I had this at an A-, this is more of a B+ however. Good, just not A material.

Cockeyed Cooper opens with a surprisingly hoppy nose for a Barleywine. In fact, at first, a heavy smattering of grapefruit rind and pine hops is all that comes across. After a few seconds these initial aromas calm down, revealing a sugary, malty underbelly ripe with caramel, toffee, berry, orange, peach, brown sugar, and somehow, even more caramel. These sugary aromas bear a striking resemblance to caramel-covered fruits--the expensive kind found in artisan shops--and is extremely alluring. Toast crust and rising wheat dough help ground the brew. Hardly present, and surprisingly so, is any hint of bourbon, since this was barrel-aged. Only a slight vanilla and oak tinge gives it away, and that very hard to detect. As a whole, the nose is excellent, and while it may be slightly too strong on the sugars, is still enticing.

On the tongue, the beer opens with a simultaneous hop and malt slam, the former bringing grapefruit rind, pine sap, dandelion stem, and touches of eucalyptus, and the latter covering the tastebuds in waves of caramel, brown sugar, apricot, berry, white grape, and green apple. Some toast crust and baguette helps bring the beer to earth, but not by much, as the sugars are intense--so intense that it takes the full force of the beer's 65 IBUs just to get the hops noticed. Additional notes of vanilla and oak, as well as extremely subtle tawny port and cognac, give excellent depth and complexity. Late in the mouthful the port and cognac flavors rise in potency, bringing a charcoal-filtered whang to the brew, as well as for the first time revealing the high 11.1% ABV in vodka-like heady vapors. The aftertaste is a continuation of these liqueur-like flavors, as well as fainter hints of bread and grapefruit rind, and lingers for a long time. Mouthfeel is medium to medium-high, and carbonation is medium.

Overall, this is excellent fare, and easily one of the better Barleywines I've tasted. Especially noteworthy here is how the beer doesn't rely exclusively on heavy, thick malt flavors--such as many beers of this style do--but adds IPA-like hops and bourbon barrel aging to the mix. The result is definitely worth seeking out, and firmly places pretty much everything Uinta Brewing makes at the top of my "must try" list.

Dark brown, though clear, with very dark ruby edges and a inch-high khaki colored collar. This leaves spots of lace down the glass. Very pretty.

Sweet aroma of caramel, bread, bourbon, and a mild alcohol sting. Simple, straightforward, though pleasant.

Good amounts of sweet caramel and graham cracker, along with bourbon, cereal, and bread crusts. The alcohol is fairly well hidden, all things considered, and sneaks up on you quick!

Medium bodied with moderate carbonation with just a bit of alcohol bite. By all measurements, a very well crafted beer.

A great beer for the price and availability.

Poured into large snifter; deep blood-red ruby with a huge fluffy tan head even from a soft pour that fades very slowly, leaving tons of lacing. Smell is big malt, some bitter hops, bourbon and vanilla, and some woody notes. Taste is big malt, a hefty presence of bitter hops, as well as some dark chocolate and dark fruit. Then it all smooths out into bourbon/vanilla/woody flavors. Mouthfeel is huge and creamy. Alcohol is noticeable but not in a bad way.

Big ass beer, big old dark brown and auburn pour, extremely thin head on it, nothing much to leave lace around the glass. Aroma was massively alcoholic, that was the major thing I took away, you might be able to tell it was bourbon, all I got was hot hot heat.

Huge alcohol again on the taste, you can start to pull little aspects of it apart once your mouth gets used to the heat. A little bit of vanilla, some bourbon, charred oak, maybe a little fig or prune aspect to it, which also seems to go hand in hand with an oxidized feel at times. Just a huge beer.

I like a lot of Uinta stuff, but this is not their best effort. A decent price, you can usually find these for around $10, but damn, there's just no finesse to it.

I think the best part of this beer was watching my non BA friend Shawn get whacked on this stuff during Wrestlemania. Holmes called me later in the week like "what happened at the end of the night?"

Drink slow.

A- This beer pours a dense brown body that is clear with a faint glow of red at the base. There is a bubbly beige head that last and a few tiny bubbles trail up the glass.

S- The dry caramel note has an oak barrel quality that is soft with a caramel and biscuit malt note to follow.

T- The roasted spicy flavor of dry caramel malt an biscuit malt note blend with a faint leather and spice note and a finish of bitter hops and lightly roasted malt characters that linger.

M- The medium mouthfeel has a soft alcohol warmth and a soft fizz in the finish.

D- The sweetness is faint and only really in the nose and the dry malt flavors are well blended making this big beer drink very easily. The bitterness in the finish grows more than the malt characteristics. I prefer barleywines with a bit more sweetness and a bit more depth in the malt flavors.

T - Hopps, booze, carmel, earth, mustiness

M - Frothy, thick, med/full body, booze is is quite potent

O - Bourbon Barreled barley wine?? Must of missed all of that part. Pretty disappointed. Super boozy, lots of carmel, very American (hoppy), not flavorful. I honestly don't think this beer represents the words on the label well. I did not like this. I do not recommend it. Save your money.

In Denver on business and stumbled across Barleywine pouring at Falling Rock. lucky me. Bartenders attitude reminds me of no BS vibe at tornados but he knew his sh*t. Cockeyed Cooper was disappointing in my opinion. A bit too light on the flavor side for my Barleywine tastes. On to round 2.

Corked and caged big bottle into a Samuel Smith nonic.

Appearance: Dark amber, little discernible carbonation, but good raindrop retention hanging around the bulbous part of the glass.

Smell: An overall good combination of the sweetness from the barleywine flavors, and the bourbon sweetness. A lot of vanilla and oak sweetness and fruit esters, with probably some citrus hops aromas in there also.

Taste: Sharp sweetness and bitterness, which I like, initially, along with big vanilla and sweet bourbon flavors, but everything's fairly subdued overall. That said, by the end, there's a nice lingering hop citrus bitterness, and for a brew like this dealing with the sweetness from all corners, it seems like this may be a good candidate for some aging. With the ABV%, which isn't, mind you, out of this world, but something of which to take note, the hop bitterness is doing a wonderful job here in not making it too sweet, but also making the hop presence known, balancing nicely with the sweeter malt and bourbon flavors coming through.

Mouthfeel: Minuscule but prominent carbonation contributing to the boozy attributes of the brew. Almost like champagne-yeast, but as if the bourbon soaked into it too much. Yet it remains through-and-through a beer, with a mild creaminess.

Drinkability: A solid sipper, and one I would've liked to get two bottles of, because I have a feeling that the age on this one will certainly make it worth cellaring in the end. That said, it's good as it is, and is a bit more raucous, though not exponentially, than I thought it would be initially. Verdict: I'd like to try more from the series, and I hope I can get them in the future.

Ooh, that's what I like a barleywine to look like: a syrupy/candied deep reddish brown, with a dirty beige head that's creamy and thick as a pillow. Starting off dandy.

Fairly tame for a 11.1% bourbon-barrel barleywine, but whaddawegot? We got wood that is separated well from the bourbon, and the bourbon is polite. Notes of vanilla and molasses. Lighter cherry notes. Very subdued alcohol. I am intrigued.

Lots going on in the taste, but not so much that it's messy, and it really transforms from the beginning of the sip until the final molecule is down the hatch. It begins thin, woody, medicinal and mutates into herbal and slightly bitter tastes in the middle, while nearing the end we get dark fruit and molasses, and the finish finally brings in some bourbon and keeps a lasting mixture of hops and vanilla on the tongue. I don't think I'm dreaming this up, because it strikes me like this, in this basic order, with every sip. I remain intrigued.

Smooth yet sticky, there's pretty good heft to the texture and the body leans on the medium to heavy side. Chewy.

Cockeyed Cooper is quite the character. There's a lot happening here, more than I think I can glean from even a big bottle like this. But I'll be damned if I'll open another big bottle of it to figure it out further (probably a good thing I don't have another one to open). This one works in mysterious ways, and to its credit remains solid and enjoyable the whole time.

A - dark amber with a soft, brown, foamy head that has decent retention

S - caramel, candy sugar, faint alcohol, faint bourbon

T - caramel, bread, burnt sugar, alcohol, faint bitter hops, dark fruit, bourbon, wood

M - warm, full bodied, smooth

This is fantastic. It has complex flavor and surprisingly dangerous drinkability. There's great balance. The bourbon is complimentary and adds complexity. This is all around solid. I'll definitely be having this again.

A: A deep amber/brown body pours a frothy tan head that holds very well. The body has a thick haze and looks to a grainy appearance. The lacing is left in wave patterns and is very sticky. Low to medium carbonation, good for the style.
S: The aroma has a bold bourbon smoothness, while showing a nice layered note of sweetness of barleywine.
T/M: The front is a low carbonated silky body that has good sweet tones on the front of caramel and dark fruits. While the body has a strong note of oaked bourbon. Nice balance between the two and one does not dominate the other. Finish is great, clean and smooth, leaving a nice lingering taste.
D: Great flavors and a very well hidden ABV. A bottle that I had no problem finishing and would buy again.

Smells like sweet candy. Lots of smells dancing around.

Lots of bourbon in the mouth, sweet notes. Great sipping beer.

Very creamy with little carbonation. Awesome.

Great for an after dinner treat. Strong, and a great sipper.

(A) 750mL poured into a snifter. Pours a deep red, dark cherry red around the edges. Foamy beige head that leaves some lacing.

(S) Smells of currants, raisin, bourbon, fig, somewhat sweet and somewhat musty.

(T) The fig is quite present. Its very malty and has some sweetness from the malty sugars. The alcohol is hidden quite well. The bourbon comes back up with your breathing. It hangs a bit on the aftertaste.

(M) It's a smooth and complex beer. Very smooth to the finish.

(O) This was a very surprisingly god beer. Wasn't expecting it, mainly because I wasn't sure what to expect. It was very well balanced and definitely not too boozy.

Pours an effervescent chestnut tinged mahogany with a finger of mocha colored head. Above average lacing & head retention

S: Plums & prunes & booze

T: Plums, a touch of raisins & booze up front, some leafy hops as well. Dark fruit with a bit of brown sugar as this warms, along with dryness, a bit of booze bite. Finishes with woody hops, candied prunes & a touch of oaky sharpness

MF: Chewy, low carbonation, skews too fruity for me, pretty warming

Drank easy enough for the style & ABV, but not really one I would go for again. Had high hopes after trying their BA Imp Stout; would work slightly better as an English BW, not enough to really save the day though

While not quite orgasmic, I found this to be a really great beer. With hints of coconut and caramel, the beer has a shiny nose. The color is a rusty dirty brown with significant haziness. Nice fine cappuccino cream head. The taste is sweet and a nutty with a hint of bitterness at the back end. The mouthfeel has depth and character. It's not too thin or two dense, nicely balanced. Reminds me very much of another burbon barrel aged beer I tried in North Carolina, except for the fact that this has a much softer alcohol presence. The alcohol is there, but it doesn't smack you in the face when you take a whiff.

The moment I popped the cork on this one, I realized I couldn't go back. Go back to a time that this was sitting in my fridge, staring at me with its awesome, hilarious label. Taunting me.

A: The cork popped with a whimper rather than a bang. The beer is undeniably gorgeous. It's a dark brown with hints of gold, a no-nonsense barleywine look with head that just wants to be part of the fun, to varying degrees of success. Just too wonderful to look at.

S: Vanilla, oak, and raisins dominate the aroma, with an absolutely captivating finish of how-do-they-still-smell-so-good fresh hops. I would buy an air freshener for my car that smells like this.

T: My first sip sort of frightened me. I'm alone to enjoy this brew, and I know that my fiance wouldn't like this flavor bomb, but that doesn't curb my regret. I feel like Caligula drinking this without sharing. It does not allow for big sips: once it coats your tongue, the sweet and sour malty oaky business and citric hop quality doesn't allow you to take too much at once. One of the most full-bodied beers I have ever tasted. The alcohol is completely masked. I implore everyone to have at least a sip of this. And to think: I was saving my bottle of Labyrinth because I assumed it would be the better beer. I can't imagine this brewery making something that tastes better than this.

M: A bit syrupy, but in a pleasing way that counteracts the hop bite (This was barrel aged! How do they have such a fresh bite?!) and lends a lot of smoothness to the more astringently liquorish qualities of the bourbon flavor. What could have this alcohol-on-the-tongue dissolving feeling instead coats and pleases the mouth. Great stuff here.

D: It's a sipper. But at a price of $12-$18 per bottle depending on where you buy it, this still feels like an incredible bargain compared to some of the pretenders out there.

I would buy a case of this to pop open on every special occasion that I observe over the next ten years. It's that level of special.

Poured from 750ml caged and corked bottle.

A- Pours a deep copper color. Hints of red hues really pop out when held to the light. One finger tan head shows medium retention. Nice sheety lacing all over the sides of the glass.

S- The bourbon barrel aging in this come out first to me in the aroma mixing with a huge raisin and plum darker fruit scents. The bourbon comes through in a nice light scent with wood being secondary. Hints of syrupy molasses with big caramel malts in the second part of the aroma. Alcohol is present but not in a overpowering form. Vanilla is also present in hints toward the second half of the aroma.

T- The front of the beer has a ton of barrel aging just like the aroma. Bourbon is nice and smooth unlike many other barrel aged barleywines I have had. Wood comes through mixed with caramalized darker fruits. Plum and raisin come through in the middle of the beer with hints of vanilla as well from the barrel. Ending has a smooth caramel malt that plays a nice underbody to some wood flavor and warming alcohol that shows a little heat.

M- Medium heavy mouthfeel. Carbonation is low but good for the style. Darker fruits, caramel malts, light barrel notes are left on the palate. Aftertaste has warming alcohol, caramel malts, vanilla, and darker fruit. Flavors were well balanced much more than I expected for what the beer was. No off flavors were present in the beer at all. Medium high alcohol drying on the palate.

O- This beer was a unexpected treat. I have been sitting on this bottle for the past year it seems and I'm glad I did. The flavors are hard to beat in any barrel aged beer. The ABV is high but the alcohol doesn't come out in any sort of heat. A great beer that should be shared among friends.
