American Double / Imperial Pilsner |  9.00% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
Tilted Smile breaks away from the crowd. Big in alcohol, yet approachable and versatile. Confidently balanced with Saaz hops and 100% Pilsen malt. Crisp and delightfully carbonated.

Poured into a Pilsner glass giving off a dark lemon almost light gold color. Has a decent white head not much retention. Excellent lacing upon the glass however, decent elevator music for the bubbles with a somewhat opaque but not totally consistency.

Smell.. at first is a macro metallic smell, took awhile to figure that out but doesn't go away. Slight yeast, a wet smell but clean but has a Bud quality macro smell to it. Not impressed by that at all.

Taste though is much improved from the bouquet, chewy to some extent, some hop and a bread character, but only slightly crisp. Body is good, but the afterfinish is actually not that great, slight metals, alcohol present..

I'll pass on this one, a mish mash of some good but also disappointing faults.

750 ml bottle was poured into a pint glass.

Appearance: This beer poured a good sized head that reduced to a puffy layer. Nice lacing from the reduced head. It is a golden straw yellow with great clarity and vision of bubbles coming up through the glass. More lacing on the glass as the best was drank.

Smell: Bready and sweet Pilsner malts followed by grassy noble hops. Nothing fantastic.

Taste: Pilsner alcohol, boozy alcohol, grassy and mild hop bitterness

Mouthfeel: Chewy, crisp, refreshing, low to medium carbonation, a little boozy, and medium to full bodied.

Overall: This imperial pilsner is a bit too much for me. Alcohol is a bit much along with the pilsner malts. The hops are nice and traditional.

750ml bottle cage and cork stylie bottled on 8/8/13 consumed on 11/19/13

Deep golden color, massive, smooth pure-white foam crown.. Active look.

Hearty, spicy hop and yeastie aroma, saaz hops smell wonderful! green veggies, spring water, mild citrus, sour white grapes. The aroma is actually very pungent.

The flavor is pretty intense, high heat for sure, spicy and tangy bite with hops and yeast taking over after the heat. This one dry's out nice, hits you as slick and rich at first then becomes earthy and dry with a tangy bite. Complexity in flavor and mouth feel is really high, layers of flavor...which makes this Imperial Pils rather interesting concidering how mundane and standard most pilsners can be. corn, hearty wheat, veggies are all in the flavor in a minimal way, but the complexity reveals many interesting aspects. As the brew warms, some cloying malt slickness coats the mouth, but this is an Imperial pils, so I'm not to surprised by this.

I'm not the biggest fan of this style usually, but this one is spot-on. Big in all the right ways while still leaving room for the classic aspects of a pilsner. I also appreciate any brewer that can create a well rounded IMP Pils. not an easy style, almost blasphemous in many regards, but it certainly is a style-bender and envelope pusher!
