Appearance is black with at least a finger of tan head, some of which lingered for a reasonable amount of time and left nice lacing as the beer went down. The blend of licorice and hops make for a unique nose. Roasted malt and hops co-exist in an excellent combination. Spicy bitterness on the finish lasts and lasts on the tongue.

Perhaps my only critique of this offering is that the harshness of the alcohol on the finish was a bit overdone.

Bottle from Harvest Market
Pours a clear dark brown with garnet highlights at the edges and a huge bubbly tan head that persists forever. Aromas of earthy pine dominate with bits of caramel and chocolate in supporting roles. The flavor is rich chocolate and caramel malt with lots of earthy pine and citrus hop flavor. Moderate to high level of hop bitterness. Medium body with a moderate level of carbonation and a slick resinous mouthfeel. I enjoyed this brew. It's just at is expiration date which I didn't notice at the store, but its still drinking really well. I'd like to revisit this with a fresher bottle as this one has lots of porter like qualities to it at this time.

(best before 07/10/14 - purchased cold - poured into a balloon)

A: yes, it's pretty damn dark... sandy-tan colored, dense, creamy foam - excellent retention, at first - the foam appears as if it was just thrown into the glass... cobwebby drapes of lace

S: pine, grapefruit, mint chocolate.... strong underlying coffee-ish roast aromas... overall, moderately vibrant stuff... bit of a hot pepper spice and clean, yet soft booze emanating later on

T: bittersweet coffee, solid showing of mid-range crystal during the first half of the sip... menthol/mint and semi-sweet dark chocolate on the back end... sort of a vibrant, phenolic thread throughout matched with the aggressive, but not quite biting, piney hop bitterness... citrus highlights brought out by alcohol evaporating on the palate

M: glassy smooth and clean with a bit of a thin-syrupy middle.... comforting (again, menthol) warmth rising up the back of the throat, through the nostrils.... excellent balance of fullish viscosity and penetrating heat (via alc.).... ultimately fairly dry

O: definitely a hopped-out stout - how could you argue?.... love the mint chocolate element... not too much different than the lion's share of black ales, but all the flavors are potent and matched... easy sell

Clear very dark brown colored beer with a small brown colored head.

Smells strongly of northwestern hops and is actually fairly minty. Chocolate and patent malt with a spicy carrot smell to it. Slight savory scent of sauteed onion.

Starts out savory with a chocolate and some sort of meat taste to it. Medium bitter for the style. Tastes earthy with a slight bitter chocolate flavor. Distinct hop flavors are absent in the taste except a strong tea flavor. Mostly though this is earthy in taste.

Mouthfeel is good.

Overall a pretty decent beer for the style.

I really try hard to review beers without seeing what other people say about them so that my review is objective. I don't want to have ratings sway my vote. But I stumbled across this beer by chance because the vendor had placed a "Beer Advocate Rating of 99" or something along those lines and I really liked Cascadian Dark Ales (CDA's from here on) so I thought it must be good. What an understatement. This one is perfect. It's the only beer I've given a perfect overall rating yet, not that it means anything to each reader because, as we all well agree, beer preference is mostly subjective.

From a fresh bottle to a pint glass.

Appearance- Two fingers of tan head. The beer is black with some ruby hints around the edge when held to the light. It really looks perfect in a pint glass although many may prefer such a hefty beer in a tulip or even snifter. There is a sever lacing throughout the entire drink.

Nose- Northwest, American hops. Wonderful. I am not so trained on picking up specific aromas but there is some undeniable spicy smell that I liken to cinnamon. Perhaps that's the "hemp seeds" it says it's brewed with. Pleasant malty smell present. You get a bit of that dark, unhusked malt but it's very subtle and certainly doesn't make the beer aroma dark. Spritely and effervescent is more accurate.

Taste- Very, very pleasant. The bitterness (not sure of IBU's off hand) is not that noticeable as you might think considering it's an "Imperial" or "double" CDA. Lots of malt but they are balanced well with those resinous hops. Warm and sweet...noticeable alcohol at the finish. The mouthfeel is heavier than your normal IPA/CDA, almost chewy. As it warms up, it gets surprisingly more bitter for me.

Overall- This is such a great CDA (sorry, but I call 'em CDA's). It's very dark, yet aromatic as can be with that enormous amount of hops. It's sweet yet balanced. Maybe not as dry as some others but it is still my favorite Black IPA/CDA by far. It really can't get better and this beer has a serious punch. For me on this review I was one and done.
