A dark brown that's not thick but too dark to see through, this beer develops a cocoa-colored head that's bubbly but tight and leaves good lacing that, for the most part, throws out some good legging as well.
The nose is a good mix of pine and roast. This one does well to avoid going to far in either direction and finds a good median between roasty malt and hoppy bitterness. The flavor is where the complexity comes out.
Pine, roast and cocoa sweetness meld exceptionally well on the tongue. Coming alongside are notes of chicory and a bit of citrus, complementing without negatively interfering. Roast never goes too ashy or astringent, nor does bitterness ever get too pithy or chalky. Some resin notes add to the powerful hops that, at 109 IBUs, are so well handled. Alcohol is just noticeable, very well masked at over 9%. This beer goes to show what the style can really do and be.
Not as thick or heavy as a stout but with a bit more body than a typical IPA, though it falls within the medium-bodied range, this beer drinks more to that end. It has a solid cripness and flows smoothly.
