Bottle from Binny's in Champaign, IL
Bottled on 3/6/12
Poured into a tulip glass
Dubhe is a very good black IPA, featuring some very delicious concentrations of hops and a subdued, but palatable, dark malt backdrop. I would appreciate a bit more of the roasted and chocolate flavors being noticeable along with the hops, but the imbalance is enjoyable, too. Definitely one to pick up if seen again.
Pours a 2cm head of tan bubbles, small and densely packed, with fairly good retention. Eventually, the head declines to a thin cap atop the body, leaving generous amounts of lacing in its wake. Body is an opaque dark brown to black, with carbonation just visible rising from the bottom of the glass.
Aroma of grapefruit and a bit of wet bark on top of rich caramel, some roasted, and some chocolate malts. Generally very nice, manages to hide the ethanol well. Good, but not mind-blowing.
Taste opens with grapefruit-like hop bitterness on top of roasted and chocolate-like malts, the grapefruit gradually progressing to a general citrus flavor. Mid-palate brings in some pine resin along with the grapefruit bitterness, and a restrained, smooth roasted malt backdrop. Back of palate maintains bitterness, expresses a bit of ethanol, and finds a resurgence of general citrus flavors. Aftertaste of lingering bitterness, pine resin, subtle roasted malt, and a bit of ethanol.
Beer is medium-heavy bodied, with moderate, but very "soft" carbonation, creating an overall smooth and creamy mouthfeel. Ethanol is rather prevalent, from mid-palate through the aftertaste, in the nostrils and throat, in the form of heat and slight burning. Nothing over-the-top, and well hidden for a 9.2% beer, but it still detracts somewhat from experiencing the other flavors, scents, and feel of the beer. Finish is dry, with a slight stickiness across the palate.
