Bottle from Sammy, 12oz into a tulip. Bottled March 6, 2012.
Dark brown with some ruby highlights, beige head with dense lace but light retention. Hops are first to appear in the nose, citrus, clementine and some pine with a big cocoa and dark chocolate base. Says this was made with hemp seeds, and some herbal/seedy notes are present as well. Pine, berries and some tropical notes in terms of hopping with some dark fruits, chocolate, roast and a bitter piney/herbal finish. Medium full feel, sticky and bitter with a low carb. Sweeter than some Black IPAs, but fairly tasty.

Appearance (4.25/5): Amazing black/very dark brown with an extremely long-last 2.5-3 finger tan head. Wow. Impressive!
Smell (4.5/5): Excellent nose of grapefruit, pine, and dark chocolate and coffee undertones. I like that this is clearly VERY hop-forward and does not seem to be leaning to the roast side of the Black IPA spectrum.
Taste (4.75/5): Massive, massive, MASSIVE grapefruit notes from start to finish. The bitterness makes itself known as soon as you take your first sip, and it is QUITE sharp; it ebbs in the middle, and the beer opens up to more unsweetened dark chocolate, coffee, and a touch of roast; in the end we’re back where we started–massive grapefruit bitterness. Not balanced at all, but that's not a problem in my mind.
Mouthfeel (4.75/5): The mouthfeel is quite extraordinary–the hemp seed lends a nice oiliness to the beer that beefs up the body and makes this silky smooth to drink. What a great ingredient addition, and a very unexpected one at that. Spot-on medium carbonation. The beer is rich and quenching at the same time, though it’s a very big beer, so the drinkability isn’t so high.
Overall (4.50/5): This is easily one of the best Black IPAs on the market and the best one that I have had, beating the exceptional Stone Sublimely Self-Righteous out with the extraordinary mouthfeel. Way to go, Uinta. You have my attention.
