Aroma: Slightly grassy, piney, and pithy hop notes up front. Light cream and cocoa in the background. Very distinct aroma profile that showcases beefy American hops and also the roasted grain profile. Nicely done.
Appearance: Dense black pour with a low off white head that retains reasonably well. Appears still in the glass.
Flavor: Citrusy and grassy flavors abound. I get more wet grassy character which I assume is from the ingredients. More light background cocoa. Surprisingly distinct and they don't blend together which I think is nice. Balance is firmly bitter. Slightly pithy like drinking orange juice. Finish is clean and dry.
Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with medium high carbonation. Slightly oily and warms you up on the way down.
Overall impression: A big, enjoyable black IPA. Seemed a little disjointed but hits all the characteristics you would expect given the brewer's label of this one. For the price, it's tough to beat. Well done.
