I had three of these while at the Old Toad in Rochester I had no idea of the ABV until looking at Beer Advocate. That may explain my slightly wobbly walk back to my hotel.

Served in a standard pint, the beer is black with a nice tan head. Rings of lace was you work your way through the beer.

Nose of roasted malts and some juicy, citrus type hops.

Taste leads with roasted malts, a bit of toffee and some pine. The beer has an earthy quality which I liked. The alcohol was well hidden.

The mouth is coating and a touch oily. Very easy to drink….

On tap at MacGregor's Grill and Tap Room in Rochester NY.

Pours a dark brown, almost black color. 2 inch head forms, with good lacing down the glass.

Smells more like an IPA than a black ale- citrus aromas- grapefruit and orange, with some resinous pine. Some roasted malt in the background is drowned out by hops.

The taste is a bit more balanced between dark and hoppy. A hop attack up front, supported by 109 IBUs. Fresh and zesty tastes of citrus and pine crash into a big backbone of roasted malt and some chocolate.

There is a lingering hop bitterness after each sip that is very nice. Medium bodied, creamy mouthfeel, dry.

A great black IPA, lots of dank hop flavor in here.

Deep black color with a caramel thick head with good retention and leaving laces.
Nice aroma of grapefruit, coffee, roasted malts that come and go.
Flavor rotates between full roasted and caramel malty taste, peppery yeast and piney hops. All strong and predominant at some point in the degustation. Hints of grapefruit, cocoa, resin and roasted coffee. Probably I would not mention the unexpected hemp seeds if I haven’t read about it, but I did felt it, likely using as a benchmark a German beer (Cannabia) I had a couple of years ago where Cannabis were really intense.
Very dry and bitter aftertaste with a residual long lasting tasted of roasted malts and a hint of charcoal.
Full body, a bit oily, with low carbonation, the 9.2%ABV is dangerously well hidden.
Beautiful Black Imperial IPA, full of flavors with strong character in all three key ingredients. I loved the constant interchanging taste feature. A must try beer.

We crack the top and pour a brew of the deepest chocolate brown. It throws up a one and a half finger tall head of creamy light brown bubbles, showing great retention. Spots of ridges of wet lacing are left all around our glasses. No haze or sediment is noted, and carbonation appears to be moderate. The nose is a bit muted at first, but flourishes to give bright vanilla thickness, floral, nectary, and grassy hops, molasses and Tootsie roll sugars, chocolate milk creaminess, heavy booziness, darkly roasted coffee malts, sweet bubblegum esters, light tinny metallics, black raspberry fruitiness, and freshly picked rose petals. With warmth comes a soft buttery air. Our first impression is that the flavoring is very full all around, with heaviness of booze and malts alike. As we sip, the taste opens with syrupy chocolate sweetness, smooth vanilla slickness, edamame oiliness, bittered mineral and gravel, candied apple sugars, roasted barely and coffee malt, pear and pineapple, herbal hoppiness, and fusel ethanol. Peaking through the middle come notes of more of those bittered herbal hops, rich roasty char, pumpernickel bready thickness, chalk dust, pumpkin seed, malted milk balls, nail polish remover bite, and continued boozy slam. The ending wash comes with puckered soapy hops, melted brown sugars, bubblegum esters, grassy weediness, wheat cracker grit, eraser, aluminum, burnt chocolate and coffee malt roast, and a decimating cleansing from alcohol. The aftertaste breathes of graphite and gravel, heavily roasted barley, white sugars, floral and herbal hoppiness, light char, light leathers, cooked roast, raw radishes, sunflower seediness, drying baker’s yeast, and rosehip. The body is medium to thick, and the carbonation is light to medium. Each sip is smooth, giving nice slurp, smack, cream, froth, and pop. The mouth is coated with hearty foam, with nice puck, and only light astringent dryness situated towards the front of the hard palate. The abv is appropriate, and the beer sips easily.

Overall, what we liked best about this beer was its inclusive aroma. Here we met nice fruitiness, solid hoppiness, creaminess, and hearty, grainy grit. These notes all made their way to the flavoring but were pushed a bit too far to the side by the boisterous booze that seemed to invade each aspect of the sip. Thus, at times, it was rather harsh, but enough room was left for the nicer, thicker qualities of the hops and grain to poke through. On another positive note, the label is one of the simplest, most elegant we’ve seen in recent memory, which is partly why we were so excited for this one. Expect a strong beer from the get go, but don’t be surprised if it isn’t as balanced as you would have liked.

*puff puff*

Pours lighter black with a finger of tanish head and good retention.

Smell is roast and juicy hops, more of the former.

More hops come out in the taste, toward the end of the pallet, but up front is roast. Some alcohol present.

Heavier bodied and a piney finish. Long after taste, leaves the mouth feel a big slick. Run of the mill black ipa, the imperial might hurt it a bit.

A: Black, brown around the edges. Mild carbonation, head fades quickly.
S: Slightly hoppy, quite musty. Maybe a bit lemony. Not much malt or yeast character.
T: Bitterness mixed with chocolate malts. Still a bit musty, vegetal. Maybe just a tad grapefruit. Some sweetness too, not unpleasant though. The malt flavors present in the initial sips fade quickly in the face of the bitterness, but there is still a faint coffee taste. Flavor is mostly grapefruit and pine. This beer is good, but the malt ahs a bit too much dimension and the hops have a bit too few. Alcohol is well hidden
M: Medium to medium-full, acceptable for this style. Maybe the best feature of this beer.
O: The taste is good - not great - the aroma is not very good at all. This is an okay beer. It has some complexity, is not terribly drinkable (which is okay). Worth trying one, not something you'd necessarily actively seek out.
