Toasted, chocolaty dark malts align with an astronomical amount of hops.

Very dark reddish-brown with a half a finger head. A bit boozy to the nose with a bit of grain and malt. WOW. Extremely smooth. Goes down extremely easy for such a high ABV beer. The booziness comes through a bit in the aftertaste but it's not overwhelming. This is a high quality IPA. I would absolutely recommend it to a friend.

This astronomer has been eyeballing Dubhe (on the beer shelf, not the sky) for a little while now. Snapped it up when it turned up on the pick-and-mix six-pack shelf at the supermarket.

a: black but quite clear at the bottom, as if clarified, not too opaque. Thin head made of very fine creamy bubbles.

s: super hoppy. I was afraid I was in for something really bitter.

t: almost candy-sweet, smokey, medicinal/herbal notes. Bitter afterwards. Maybe if it was a little bit warmer (if I'd left it on the kitchen counter for three hours rather than in the poorly-insulated laundry room on a cold day) there would be less of that bitterness.

m: a little bit fizzy, slippery, satisfying.

o: this is really nice, and completely different from other black IPAs I've tried, which tend to be like a normal IPA plus dark malt. I'm intrigued now to find out if there are other beers called "imperial IPAs", and if they taste like this, or if this is something completely unique.

Soft aromas of herbs, grains, cocoa, and barley. Black appearance with a tan foam line. Smooth flavors of herbs, roasted caramel, juicy grapefruit and citrus overtones. Other subtle notes of coffee beans, molasses, chocolate and hop resin. Overall, a very nice black IPA. smooth and flavorful. very noticeable alcohol finish.

Very dark red-brown. Looks like a red ale with squid ink mixed in. Long-standing beige-colored head holds true.

Very hoppy nose with earthy notes and grapefruit. Malts have a generous amount of roast bitterness. Citrusy, not piny. A really bold, yet simple, nose that doesn't disappoint.

Surprising mellowness, as if this has an estery yeast with a Belgian flair to cut back on the rigidity of American hops. Grapefruit, lemon, tangerine, and a spicy hop acidity. Earthiness comes from a dry smooth roastiness that adds very little bitterness. Like a Belgian dark ale spiked with a bushel of fine hops from the Pacific Northwest. Strange note of root vegetable in the finish (beets?). Quite a delicious black ale.

Smooth for a black IPA. They usually seem over-carbonated, but the extra strength skimmed that back to just a good level.

Very tasty. Consistently good all the way through. A highlight from this brewery.

12 FL. OZ. bottle
Served in a perfect pint glass

A - It pours dark brown with dark amber highlights. It is topped with two to three inches of mocha head.

S - I notice some resin-y hops right off the bat. Then I notice a tea smell. The roasted malt comes out as it warms.

T - As with the smell, I notice the hops at first, and then the roasted malt flavors open up as it warms. It is a nice balance of hops and roasted characteristics.

M - It is leaning pretty hard towards full.

O - This is a pretty good black IPA. I especially like the 9.2% ABV.

Poured from bottle into dollar store tulip glass!

A- Dark brownish red body with a nice fluffy tan head. Really cool package design and bottle art. Nice use of colors!

S- Smelled of citrusy hops and roasted malts.

T- Bitter hops up front, a little bit of grapefruit, roasted malts, earthiness. Not sure if there is any "hemp seeds" in the flavor. But then again, I have never tasted hemp seeds, so I wouldn't know it if there were...

M- Mouthfeel was spot on for an imperial IPA, but I think it was a little smoother due to the roasted malts.

O- Overall this was a good DIPA. It was interesting with the earthy aroma and flavor. It was a little bitter for my preference. I wouldn't buy again, but I would drink it again!
