A: Black with a decent sized lightly tanned head.

S: Roast with a lot of hops upon initial smelling. Sweet caramel, coffee, herbal hops. a touch of citrus. Very dark malt in here. Very interesting smell.

T: Lots of chocolate with a big hit of roast. Very bready. Middle of the mouth it suddenly turns into an ipa. Big dry bitter finish. caramel. lots of acid intermingling with pine. There is a presence of alcohol on the end.

M: Medium bodied, like a porter. Nice dry bitter pine finish that soon turns into a coffee finish as it lingers. and trust me, it lingers!

O: A mix of a porter and an ipa. Its a very deep brew. lots going on here but it is a very enjoyable drink. /90

Uinta Dubhe

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a standard pint.

Appearance: Basically black ale with a nice dark brown head. Head stuck around for a minute or two, left a lacing. 4/5

Smell: Not getting a whole lot from this bottle, earthy dark malts and pine-y hops are hinted. 3.5/5

Taste: Pine-y hops mixed with a nice earthy dark ale. Pretty good, big flavor. Not too much alcohol in the flavor for the ABV. 4.25/5

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied, slightly creamy, appropriate carbonation. 4.25/5

Tasty beer with plenty of flavor. 4/5

Solid black with a massive head of tan foam that reduces down to a one finger layer, but leaves a ton of lacing all over the glass.

Citrusy hop goodness up front followed by a nuttiness from the hemp seeds and some chocolate notes.

Oh my, this is a flavor punch in the mouth that I was not expecting. Huge roasted malt, coffee, and dark chocolate up front. Piney and citrusy hops with nutty hemp in the middle with a hop bitterness, coffee bean and boozey finish. Lots of depth in the flavor.

Heavier side of medium bodied with a velvety carbonation feel.

Wonderful beer. So much character and depth. This would appeal to anyone into big stouts and porters, but with an equal affinity for hops. Just hits the hops and malt flavors in a big way. So happy to have tried this.

Ba Review #277
Served On: 06/26/2013
Glassware: DFH Goblet
Labeled ABV: 9.2%
Date/ Code: 10/12/13

This was from a 4-pack picked up at A.K.A. Frisco`s in Frederick.

Look: Poured a crazy black color - like stout black with a sandy tan colored head. Lacing was everywhere and super thick.

Smell: Roasty malt character with some hints of dark chocolate. Some juniper and black licorice mixed with an herbal spearmint.

Taste: First up was some roasted notes and a creamy sensation right at the middle with a lactose quality. An herbal twang set in towards the finish and a nice black licorice that lingered well into the aftertaste. No booze detected at all.

This was probably the best Black IPA I’ve had to date. Very complex and interesting. Not just a porter with some extra hops.
