single from a Utah state liquor store in SLC, super fresh bottled 4/11/12 consumed 4/17/12, nice labeling

a: poured into a stubby chalice, this beer is a deep pecan shell brown in color, initially sporting a finger of dark tan head that falls back to a thin coating

s: pungent dark green pine hop notes, heavy and acidic, sappy and thick, dominate the the front of the nose, underneath is found a body of black roasted malts and burnt sugars, bitter chocolate, toasted nuts, some nice alcohol after warming, love it

m: carbonation around moderate on a medium-full bodied ale

t: loaded with dense pine hop flavors spread across a base of roasted barley and toffee sugars, just a huge hop presence with big acids and resinous pine needles, the overwhelmed sugars are pushed out early to make way for bitter chocolate and a puckering, growing bitterness that lingers long with roasted barley flavors, alcohol warms with each sip

o: always thought the Uinta stuff was solid - but this was big surprise, a powerful pine bomb with a complex roasted malt structure balancing things out nicely, delicious

Bottle poured into glass gives a large coffee with cream colored head that is creamy in appearance. Head is a bit rocky with good retention. Leaves heavy lacing. Beer is almost pure black, with hints of brown and red in the light.

Smells of citrusy hops (mostly orange and grapefruit), some more earthy/floral hops, caramel and roasted malts, butter, chocolate, and just a whiff of hemp. Roasted malts are much more assertive in the taste than the nose.

Taste starts with citrusy and floral hops along with roasty malts, the roasty malts quickly overpower the hops then comes a strong chocolate taste (more than smell) along with a bit of hemp seed in the finish. Has a crisp, but very roasted finished. Has a medium body with a bit of a buttery/creamy feel, low carbonation. Black IPA's arent my favorite, but this one has a good name, and is a very good beer.

Had on tap at the Sierra Grille. Drink was poured in a tulip glassware. Drink looked beautiful. Jet black with a brown, frothy head. The aromas were rich and malty, with a burnt cocoa mixed with citrus hints. Just loved smelling the drink from the glassware. Delicious drink with alcohol hints with creamy toffee and hops. Mouthfeel was great; helped the drink have a frappe-y, creamy texture with little carbonation. Overall, this was fantastic.

"Ale brewed with hemp seed". Dubhe Imperial Black IPA is brewed in the style of an American Black IPA with the unusual inclusion of hemp seed. Date on bottle is 12/30/12, although a few months in cool temperatures shouldn't have done this beer much harm.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle to a tulip snifter. Served north of 53º Fahrenheit.

(Appearance) Pours a creamy tan brown head with a light streaked lacing. Body color is a deep mahogany brown with highlights of crimson, very dark but glorious in light with ample carbonation. Retention is very nice. Appearance is overall fantastic. 4.75

(Smell) Malt body is medium roasted caramel, toasted oats and a soft bready malt character with moderate diacetyl for a buttery character. Hop aroma has a spicy herbal hop blend up front, a musty floral tone, a touch of vinegar. Not sure about hemp seeds, they might be smuggled somewhere in the mysterious hop blend for added depth. Potency is medium+. 3.75

(Taste) Up front is a roasty toasted malt character with a pinch of butter thickness joined by a bold herbal hop bouquet with a bold bitterness. The flavor follows through to finish with a mildly bitter chocolate malt and a moderate sweetness that finishes right on faintly dry. The flavor is starkly different from the aroma- much more roasty tones and chocolate than picked up on in the aroma. Most of the regular Black IPA candidates are still there, and the hemp isn't particularly glaring in the flavor, although a seed-like finish with big sips is a potential suggestion. Overall it's pretty enjoyable. I've had better Black IPAs, but this beer musters some complexity and depth of its own. 4

(Mouthfeel) Texture is mildly creamy, slightly foamy texture with a mild carbonation presence. Finishes lightly dry with a touch of moist baking chocolate sweetness. Body is medium/heavy for the style and medium/heavy overall. Alcohol presence is medium. I enjoy the texture and carbonation of this beer. 4.25

(Overall) Not sure this beer deserves the hype it's received. I can't say I've had many Black IPAs that I've fallen head-over-heels in love with, but this one stands firm near the top of the pile. The complexity of this Black IPA is deep. Expect standard roasted and toasted character, mild baking chocolate notes and an herbal, spicy and earthy hop bouquet. It took a while for the hemp character to pan out, but it contributes more to a texture and sweetness than anything else. My biggest critique is a lack of residual sweetness. It's good to see a regularly available high gravity Black IPA option out there amongst the lighter ones. The alcohol makes this one heck of a creeper. Try this beer fresher for best character preservation. 4

Served in a snifter glass.

Appearance: it's not quite exactly black, really more of a superior dark brown full of heavy bubbles rising to the surface creating an off white-tan head rising to about one finger's length. Looks sharp.

Smell: Smooth citrus skin, little light you can almost taste the hops through your nose just wushing it was a little more potent.

Taste: The taste alone is crazy, incredibly robust and complexity drilling your palates with nothing but satisfaction. Heavy floral, deep grapefruit, plus a hop flavor bomb you will lust for. Quality straight and simple.

Mouth: Medium carbonation, heavy piney finish. You feel a slight bitter dark chocolate that hugs your cheeks. Paired with few pretzels this is a go.

Overall: This beer was bought on me being random on my last trip to Pennsylvania. Stayed in my fridge for about a week and absolutely awesome. I honestly think I found my favorite "black ipa". Thank you Uinta for making a classic. Salud!
