Poured from a 12oz bottle into a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a deep dark brown color, with a thin off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains roasted malts, chocolate and a good amount of hops.

T: The taste starts out with a strong hops bitterness followed by bitter-sweet flavors of dark chocolate and black coffee. There’s a hearty roasted malt character and a touch of an alcohol sting but not much of a balance. The after-taste is slightly bitter.

M: Crisp and a little smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is dry and slightly sticky.

O: Tasty, goes down ok, not too filling, strong kick, decent representation of style, it’s a solid beer but there are several others in the style that I would pick first.

Into a nonic:

A: deep black colored body yielding a nice two finger slightly tan around the sides head that lasts for a good three minutes before dieing. Nice foamy lacing in rings appears.

S: hops up front with some slight malty yet slight coffee notes coming out as the beer warms.

T: pretty much the same but in a very good way

M: medium and is very smooth and creamy around the tongue

O: I am thoroughly impressed, and am glad I picked this up. This is a very good American Black Ale. I'm currently having some horseradish cheese along with this and am really loving how they both go well together, at least in my opinion.

Dark brown in the wine glass. Big spicy hoppy aroma is intriguing.

This starts out with a promising malty and roasted flavor, but turns rapidly into a dark searing offensive. Plenty of hops-- actually a vast amount of hops. That wouldn't be so disturbing except for the dank, dirty flavor. Something like charred rubber and rusty water. A real adventure in aggressive brewing, but I find it thoroughly undrinkable. Shame to waste the alcohol.

From the 12 oz bottle bought at the Utah Liquor Store in Sugar House.

Had in a bar in Sweden, not knowing that I was ordering an American beer, but it was the most appealing style on the board.

Poured a very deep black with light mocha head, nice body to this beer. Smelled of more citrus and some dank hops, but not as strong as other black ales, perhaps this wasn't as fresh as could be.

The body on this beer was great, largely due to the increased abv no doubt, which made it an ideal beer to be enjoyed slowly. NIce bitterness, but again not as biting as I might expect from this style. Pleased overall, will seek out again.

Pours an abysmal black, opaque against the light. Head is tan, a quarter finger that settles to nearly cover the top. Grassy, astringent, barkish, earthy hops. I get the feeling this is going to be brutally bitter in taste. Some sweet chocolate notes and slight caramel from the hops. Baker's chocolate and caramel malt start the flavor, yielding to bitter root, almost licorice. The hop bitterness is barkish, earthy, and is accompanied by strong alcohol presence. Beneath everything is some nectar or sweet honey from one of the hop varieties. Finish is balanced, leaving you with dark chocolate and licorice. Definitely a fan of this, but it is very strong, both in flavor and ABV.

everyone i know raves about it, as the name suggests, its brewed with hemp seed, and it tastes like they tried to cram every kind of flavor into the bottle. Sickly sweet and overly bitter, and it smells like old pineapple mixed with moldy hops, i really don't see how anyone can enjoy this hodgepodge of flavors.

Bottle says best before February 2013. Poured into a tulip. The color is dark brown, almost pitch black. There is a small sized medium tan head.

The aroma is full of chocolate with notes of aromatic bitter hops.

The bitterness comes through nicely in the flavor, but the flavor of the hops are tough to get through past the strong chocolate malt flavors. I get a little pine, and there is a great bitter oily hop finish.

This is full bodied, with a nice silky mouthfeel.

This is really tasty. I'm glad to have this available here in Maine.

Pours an opaque black with a lingering dense mocha half inch head that leaves sheets of lacing.

Aroma is heavily piney, grassy, and citrusy, with underlying notes of roast and chocolate.

Flavor reveals citrus at the base, which lasts throughout. Grapefruit and pith form the base for very dank and very resiny hops, which counter the roast malt character nicely. Upper notes of tropical citrus emerge later, alongside chocolate, leading into a slightly bitter finish.

Body is fairly full, with carbonation on the high side. There's a bit of hop astringency. Alcohol warmth comes in eventually.

Overall, one of the better black ipas I've had. The roast malt and hops play well together, with the hops taking center stage. Very interesting brew! Tried a year later, and the roast malt and chocolate stand out more, and citrus notes are tamer than I recall. Still a great beer.
