A: The beer has a black body with some dark brown shades where light barely shines through. The head is a fluffy tan color with minimal lacing.

S: Big hop scents. Huge refreshing hop scent. It smells like hop pellets crushed up in my glass. There's a soft pine scent, some earthy character, and a light caramel sweetness to the smell. Very lovely.

T: Lots of roasted flavors, some smoky character, lots of big pine flavor and bitterness. There's a lot of roasted bitterness as well. It's a very good tasting beer. Some caramel flavors come out after the bitterness dies down on the palate.

M: The mouthfeel is full bodied, light on carbonation, and finishes pretty dry and clean.

O: Overall I thought it was a really good tasting ABA. I would drink it again. I'm not sure what the whole "brewed with hemp seed" thing is about, because I didn't notice anything particular about it in the beer. Anyway, the beer has a lot of pine character to it, so if you enjoy those hop flavors you will most likely enjoy this beer. The malt roasted presence is also there, without being overdone.

A - Dark brown-black with a finger of chocolate-khaki frothy head. Fades normal.

S - Roasted chocolate and caramel malts, pine, grassy, and citrus hops, some coffee, molasses, and a bit of booze.

T - Sweet roasted chocolate and caramel malts with grassy, pine, and citrus hops, some good lightly resiny bitterness, some roasted coffee, molasses, a bit of black licorice, vanilla, dark fruits, and bit of booze.

M - Medium-full bodied with moderate carbonation. Smooth with a dry, bitter, and roasted finish.

D - Very nice Black IPA. Great overall balance of hops and malt with roasted flavors.

Poured from 12oz bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance: very dark brown with red light let through. Body appears to be relatively haze-free based on the deep red highlights. Head is a thick finger of frothy tan foam, leaving a nice lace as it dissipates. Attractive.

Smell: big herby, citrusy hop aromas with a thick, sweet, alcoholic malt underneath. Smells a bit like a strong ale. Not bad at all.

Taste: strong, but not overpowering hop flavor is right up front. Citrus is highlighted here; this is followed by the sweet, strong malt character and a strong but balanced bitterness. A good example of the style.

Mouthfeel: medium body with a good level of carbonation and a concomitant creaminess. Good stuff.

Overall: a good, if strong, example of an American black ale. This might even be better classified as a strong ale. I would have this again.

A 12 oz bottle into my Duvel Stefan Glerum. Best by 1/18/13. 8.99$ per 4 pack at Total Wine Winston-Salem.

A. 4.5. Poured freely provides a nice 2 finger light brown head. Holds and sticks well. Black with a little red to dark brown if you hold it just right.

S. 4.5. Hops. Piney citrusy grapefruit hops. Blindfolded, I wouldn't know there was a black to this double. Smells earthy and west coast.

T. 4.5. Delicious. Hoppy and malty and working. Citrus hops with a dark twist. Bitter dry finish. Hardly any alcohol burn for the abv.

M. 4.5. Really good carbonation that works well with the oily feel. High enough hops to linger on the back of my tongue.

O. 4.5. I have had my fair share of these in the last few years. An exceptional black IPA and the price point is great. I readily recommend if you like dark hoppy beers. It holds it's own. As far as the hemp seed oil.. I better not fail a drug test from drinking this! Drink responsibly!
