I love this beer. I can't tell you how many times I've picked it up with the intentions of reviewing it and ended up drinking the entire 4 pack.

A- Thick black pour with a 2 finger tan color head. It looks like I just poured an espresso shot. Rich and creamy.

S- Smells like a chocolate stout with a lot of floral hops.

T- Front of the tongue has a slight piney taste while the following is a rich toasted and chocolate malt taste with floral hops. Let this one explore your tongue.

M- I love letting this sit in my mouth and just explore all of the flavors that hit my tongue. It's rich, creamy and complex.

O- I wish this beer came as a 6 pack and at a slightly lower ABV but if you can't love the beer you want then love the beer you're with. This beer is a real pleasure, I highly recommend it.

Finally found a fresh bottle. Re review.

A: Pours jet black. Finger and a half of decadent espresso creme head. Excellent retention. Very creamy looking head. Looks like one mean imperial stout.

S: Smells like a hopped up version of that. Big hops in this one. Lot of pine, citrus and floral. Backbone of roastiness. Some sweetness in there as well. Bits of coffee, some baker's cocoa and even a malted milk chocolate presence.

T: Tastes much more IPA than black. Up front is a big surge of hop bitterness. Very west coast in style. This melds into a delicious roasty characteristic. Hops bring out a huge tropical element. Pineapple, mango, papaya.Mid finish is a woodsy/leafy element akin to something Sierra Nevada would do. Finish is some apple skin, with a deep roastiness and tobacco(?) that turns to bitter in the aftertaste.

M: Surprisingly light for the style and ABV. Goes down smooth. Carbonation is toned down, but this one feels like it's closer to 7%.

O: Great brew. Nothing really stands out. Not nearly as bitter as the 109 IBU's. The dark malts help to accentuate the fruitiness of the hops. While it doesn't meld perfectly, it's still damn tasty.

Pours a deep black with a 2 inch head that lasts. Excellent lacing. Smells of hop with some apple and fruit in the background. Malt is not balanced on the nose as in some other beers. Excellent taste, hop forward with very balanced malt on the palate as well as some caramel and roasted notes. Very nice. The mouthfeel is great as well medium bodied with small bubbles. Overall a great beer. Excellent with cheese too by the way.

What a beer! Jet black color... the nose wasn't that great but that's the ONLY weakness... Let me tell u what, this is one bad-ass beer. I bought this in my local grocery store as part of a "pick your 6" pack. Admittedly, I thought the bottle looked different and I hadn't had it so I grabbed it. Lucky me, this is one hell of a beer. Nice dark stouty feel with the thickness and hop of a double IPA. I don't know all the technical terms, but this beer is complex and delicious. Oh by the way, at 9%+, it's gonna knock u on your hiney. One of my new favs, headed back to buy more!

Poured from a 12 oz bottle, served ina Duvel tulip.

A- Pours a 3/4" soapy tan head with a dark brown translucent body. Dense head sticks around a while and leaves lots of lacing.

S- Mostly pine and grapefruit with a subtle roastiness.

T- Hop-forward. Very citrusy. There's a nice bit of peach flavor there too. Bitter, but very drinkable.

M- Killer mouthfeel. Medium to full bodied, silky, and prickly at the same time.

O- A nice surprise from a brewery I've never tried before. I hope to try some more Uinta stuff soon.

A - Pours a beautiful dark brown with a tan head and nice lacing as you drink it down. Almost looks like a stout.

S - Dank herbs, pine, licorice and a touch of citrus and pineapple.

T - I was surprised that my initial taste impressions were chocolate and licorice, like a rich stout. But from there the palate is dominated by pine, bitter, dank marijuana and orange/citrus. A delicious, seductive melange of flavors. Semi-sweet chocolate and toffee notes continue to balance things out. There's a touch of Sambuca-like booze.

M - Medium-full body with a soft, velvety feel, but ample carbonation. Dry, pleasantly bitter finish, with faint lingering mocha.

Overall, this is one of only a few very successful marriages of an imperial stout malt bill with a big IPA hop profile. It's certainly reminiscent of good, sticky marijuana, and as one who has been known to indulge, this is an almost addictive brew.

A- poured a deep brown with a great ruby tint. Big creamy tan head has nice retention and leaves big lacing

S-the aroma is rich pine hops

T- where the aroma goes to the hops, the taste goes big roast malt with a nice hops balance. as the beer progresses, the hops take a more pronounced role.

M-a little thinner given the big hops but still pretty good

O- a really good black IPA

From a bottle into my snifter glass.

A- A very dark brown that almost looks black until you hold it up to the light. It has a very light that stays on the surface.

S- It is a nice mix of roast and hop notes. it smells bitter like dark chocolate.

T- It taste a lot like it smells, roast, dark chocolate, and hop notes come through. a slight alcohol bite afterwards.

M- It is very smooth with a slight bite afterwards the roasted notes stay in your mouth for awhile.

O- It is a great black IPA, it has the best of both worlds. You get the great strong hop taste coming from it and then the stout/porter roast notes and dark chocolate.

This pours out in a dark black, midnight color with some ruby color coming through in the light with a tan huge rocky head. Beautiful stuff!

The aroma is just wonderful of sweet grapefruit, very citrusy, a bit of pine, and then some wonderful coffee and roasted malt in the back.

The flavor is really interesting. It hits you with a juicy juicy hop profile. Mango, pineapple, peaches, tons of grapefruit, but then gets you with some coffee and roasted malt towards the end. The finish is a strong grapefruit peel flavor. It cleans up very easily and makes this beer very drinkable, despite the ABV.

It's very much an extremely well made DIPA along with some big robust stout/porter character. No hint of alcohol and super drinkable.

This is a gem!

A - 4 - Good looking dark brown beer that's almost opaque. Nice big frothy had on it that won't go away with nice lacing.
S - 4.25 - SUper hoppy, grapefruit, pine, some roasty malts in the background. It's really good.
T - 4.25 - Very bitter, grapefruit, pine, citrus zest with a balancing roasty dark malts.
M - 4 - Alc is mostly covered. Medium body. AFtertaste is bitter grapefruity hops.
O - 4.25 - This is a good beer. It's an economical one too, just like Hop Notch. Thanks Uinta!

Very dark reddish-brown with a half a finger head. A bit boozy to the nose with a bit of grain and malt. WOW. Extremely smooth. Goes down extremely easy for such a high ABV beer. The booziness comes through a bit in the aftertaste but it's not overwhelming. This is a high quality IPA. I would absolutely recommend it to a friend.

This astronomer has been eyeballing Dubhe (on the beer shelf, not the sky) for a little while now. Snapped it up when it turned up on the pick-and-mix six-pack shelf at the supermarket.

a: black but quite clear at the bottom, as if clarified, not too opaque. Thin head made of very fine creamy bubbles.

s: super hoppy. I was afraid I was in for something really bitter.

t: almost candy-sweet, smokey, medicinal/herbal notes. Bitter afterwards. Maybe if it was a little bit warmer (if I'd left it on the kitchen counter for three hours rather than in the poorly-insulated laundry room on a cold day) there would be less of that bitterness.

m: a little bit fizzy, slippery, satisfying.

o: this is really nice, and completely different from other black IPAs I've tried, which tend to be like a normal IPA plus dark malt. I'm intrigued now to find out if there are other beers called "imperial IPAs", and if they taste like this, or if this is something completely unique.

Soft aromas of herbs, grains, cocoa, and barley. Black appearance with a tan foam line. Smooth flavors of herbs, roasted caramel, juicy grapefruit and citrus overtones. Other subtle notes of coffee beans, molasses, chocolate and hop resin. Overall, a very nice black IPA. smooth and flavorful. very noticeable alcohol finish.

12 FL. OZ. bottle
Served in a perfect pint glass

A - It pours dark brown with dark amber highlights. It is topped with two to three inches of mocha head.

S - I notice some resin-y hops right off the bat. Then I notice a tea smell. The roasted malt comes out as it warms.

T - As with the smell, I notice the hops at first, and then the roasted malt flavors open up as it warms. It is a nice balance of hops and roasted characteristics.

M - It is leaning pretty hard towards full.

O - This is a pretty good black IPA. I especially like the 9.2% ABV.

Poured from bottle into dollar store tulip glass!

A- Dark brownish red body with a nice fluffy tan head. Really cool package design and bottle art. Nice use of colors!

S- Smelled of citrusy hops and roasted malts.

T- Bitter hops up front, a little bit of grapefruit, roasted malts, earthiness. Not sure if there is any "hemp seeds" in the flavor. But then again, I have never tasted hemp seeds, so I wouldn't know it if there were...

M- Mouthfeel was spot on for an imperial IPA, but I think it was a little smoother due to the roasted malts.

O- Overall this was a good DIPA. It was interesting with the earthy aroma and flavor. It was a little bitter for my preference. I wouldn't buy again, but I would drink it again!

A - Solid black/red body with dense caramel head. No difficulty bring the head to three fingers, and really nice lacing.

S - Deep bready malts and slight wiff of citrus.

T - Pine, floral, and slightly citrus hops rush in followed by a wave of deep sugary malts, molasses and dank earth. Good bite of alcohol rides out at towards the end.

M - Medium/full body with moderate carbonation. So creamy and smooth and in no way sticky, washing away clean.

O - This is great black ipa. It has a solid bite of hops, not overly sweet malt base, and best of all a huge ABV. Definitely a great beer for the fall season.

12 oz bottle was poured into a tulip glass.

Appearance: This beer poured a one finger mocha head that reduced to a thin layer. Nice lacing from reduced head. It is a pitch black color with no clarity but bubbles can be seen coming up through the glass. More lacing all the way down the glass.

Smell: Smoke, ash, chocolate, toasted malts, and molasses.

Taste: Tangerine and grapefruit, ash, smoke, roasted, chocolate, and toasted malts. Nice bitterness in the end too.

Mouthfeel: Smooth, chewy, creamy, roasty, medium to full bodied, and low to medium carbonation.

Overall: Pretty awesome black ale and the alcohol is merely noticeable. Porter, stout, nope. It's a delicious black ale.

A: Coffee color, clear when held up to the light, with minimal head.
--Label is nicely done evoking the classic images of the west. The color is very appealing, however this is in the eye of the beholder. The bottle itself is imprinted like a compass which is very cool.

S: Smells like a classic IPA, nice floral sweetness

T: Initial hops followed by a mild roast malt. Occasionally I get a "bottled" taste afterward, which is more likely due age/poor transport rather than the beer itself.

M: Slight residue lingers after finishing, which I like

O: Nicely done black IPA. Very similar to others I have had (21st amendment).

12 oz. bottle purchased at Franklin's Brewery and General Store in Hyattsville, MD, unknown bottling date (best by 03/12/2014) poured into a Northern Brewer pint glass, drank on 10/16/13 over an hour.

A: 2/3 - dark-brown-to-black coloration, no clarity (cannot see through), white rocky head lingers through consumption, moderate alcohol legs

S: 10/12- picking up some grassy hemp (and maybe Cascade) notes admixed with roasted, coffee ground malts

T: 16/20 - moderate bitterness on the front of the tongue; in the middle of the mouth, there are again grassy flavors that dominate but also picking up roasty, caramel-ish and dark chocolate flavors; on the back end, the roasted malt character predominate; taste very little alcohol (probably masked by all the other flavors); nice and dry aftertaste

M: 4/5 - moderate bodied, 9.2% is present but does not dominate; higher carbonation than other American black IPAs/CDAs on the market from my recollection

O: 8/10 - I was hoping for something in the class of Firestone Walker's Wookie Jack, and, even though this is a good black IPAs/CDAs, it's not in that class; I don't really like the grassy aroma/flavor likely imparted by the hemp but, if you smoke weed, you'll probably dig this more than me; however, it's one of the better examples of the style but just not world-class enough for such a high BA rating

The beer is a black imperial IPA brewed with hemp seed so the interest factor goes up by a whole lot. The beer is dark with a strong hop taste. This beer would rate up there with the best of any black IPA I have ever tried. I also thought that the name was creative! The ABV on this beer is 9.20% which is up there but it does not deter from the taste of this beer at all.

Bottle in a tumbler. Pours a dark, coffee black with a good amount of foam. Not much aroma. Taste is dark, roasty, and bitter. It is described as being brewed with hemp seed, but I'm not sure what that contributes as I don't know what hemp seed tastes like. Overall, it is quite complex but still drinkable even with the high ABV.

Poured chilled in tall ale glass.

A: solid black; very good carbonation, decent head
S: very inviting dose of chocolate, dark roast, and deep-seated hops (the first element to disappear in the nose)
T: aggressive black IPA; not very sweet; bitter; dark-roast malt; chocolate, espresso, tobacco; strong hop profile matches the booze and malt; yeast not discernible

This is the best Uinta I've had; it also fares very well as a black IPA. Cheers!

Poured a finger of tan head on a black body.
The aroma is amazing. It's a mix of roasted malt, wood, grapefruit, lemon and something I can't place.
The taste starts with smooth roasted malt, a little bitter-sweet, then moderate to heavy pine bitterness to finish. A great profile.
The texture is soft with moderate carbonation.

Taste: Big clash of flavors right off the bat, with the burnt and ashy chocolate clashing with the piney hops; the hemp appears at mid-palate, but the yin and yang of this beer fight each other long after the swallow

Overall: I have had this beer a number of times and I struggle with it each time; while it has its merits, the flavors just don't blend together very well so I find the beer quite unbalanced

It's pronounced "doo-bee". Don't ask me how to pronounce Uinta. Love this beer though. Bought it in a 4 pack for $10 (perfect!), this is a fantastic, boozy black IPA. The hop aroma is overpowered by the alcohol fumes, but you won't mind once it starts to warm your belly! The bitter chocolate of the malt and grapefruit of the hops are the most prominent flavors.
