I can't say that I really appreciated IPAs until I had this beer. I hate tons of pine and bitters. This beer to me was very drinkable. I LOVED the grapefruit taste and while it did have some bitter bite, it was not nearly as bad as some IPAs that I've had. The IBU rating is about a 82. That is high but to me the grapefruit flavor is so powerful it negates the feeling of massive bitterness. This beer is very hoppy for sure but the malts help to balance things.

BUY THE CANS! Don't buy this in bottles. The cans will prevent skunking and will stay fresher for longer.

While this was the first IPA that I liked. Lagunitas Little Sumpin' Sumpin' was like this beer but a tad bit toned down. A lot less bitters (64 IBU rating). Check that beer out too!

Poured into a Riedel tulip. The liquid is a transparent amber, with a thick yellowish head that fades pretty quickly, but leaves plenty of lace.

Aroma is pine resin, with a notable caramel malt backbone. Hints of grapefruit, but mostly piney.

Taste follows the nose - lots of pine, a bit of grapefruit, and a really noticeable caramel malt base. Finish is pretty bitter, but the malt really comes out on the aftertaste, kind of tasting like a sugar cookie, and maybe a little bit of cotton candy, which does a really great job offsetting the bitterness. Great balance here.

Mouthfeel is excellent - medium-bodied, but surprisingly creamy. Lots of soft carbonation that really contributes to the creaminess. Probably the silkiest IPA I've ever tried!

Overall, really solid IPA. Even though it doesn't have my favorite type of hop profile, the delicate balance really makes it great. It doesn't go too far in the direction of being resiny and piney, and it doesn't go too far in the direction of being overly malty either.

12oz frosty bottle into tulip

Appearance - Completely hazed over and a ruddy dark golden, there are tons of little white floaties suspended and swirling about. Nice 2 finger head with good retention. Lots of sticky lacing abound.

Smell - Starts off with a very tropical fruit hop blast; sweet, citrusy, slight pine resin. Malts present themselves as sweet but subtle caramel notes. Great smell.

Feel/Taste - Medium body feel with very gentle, smooth carb, carries flavor over the palate well. Taste is a big hop bomb up front; sweet and citrusy, pineapple, citrus pith, big grapefruit character, stone fruits like peach, a bit of pine and a moderate blast of bitterness. The malts balance nicely on the finish with a sweet caramel, honey and toasty bread note, while a moderate hop bitterness gently fades away. Not a breath of alcohol noticed despite the hefty 7.3% ABV.

Overall - An absolutely top-notch IPA (pun intended). This is a west coast, hop bomb style IPA done right; superb balance, very drinkable; actually, dangerously drinkable at 7.3% ABV. A great bargain at $8.99 p/six as well!
